And here it is, about 24 days late and is only being written because I have Math Coursework and no matter how much I try, playing Mass Effect is not justifiable when trying to find a good reason to not do it... I messed that sentence up somewhere along the lines, but it's not part of the review, so who cares.
After searching through my games collection for a game that is half worthy of reviewing I finally found one that I remembered enough about to write something on it...
So I review... Halo 3!
Not really, it's already been done to death by reviewers, not that the actual game I'm reviewing hasn't but oh well.
Gears of War.
For all the lazy people here is a brief summary of what I am about to write in this review, Gears = Good. Graphics = Good. Sound = Good and Gameplay = Okay.
Now here is the meatier version.
I, like any decent gamer should, started with the campaign, on easy mode because I sucked at First Person Shooters at this point. I enjoyed the campaign thoroughly, the cover system was new to me, a jumped up Halo fanboy, yet I still loved it because it allowed for a different type of gameplay. As a note, I will be comparing this to Halo a lot. Rather than running in and charging like Halo almost encourages you to do, Gears teaches you to somewhat value your life, it creates an environment where covering and shooting will be 10x more profitable than charging will be, it teaches you a form of tactics.
The story was a dark, post-apocalyptic, everybody-is-dead-and-the-human-race-is-somewhat-screwed kind of environment, which I loved, Post-Apocalyptica is something I would very much jump on and make babies with, 28 Days Later and I Am Legend were the greatest things I ever put in my DVD Player, *Cough* Not that I own a pirate copy of I Am Legend or anything. But honestly, the story is great, although it doesn't linger too much on the "We're all screwed, I want to die" attitude like most good PA (Post-Apocalyptica) does, but rather it stays around the hard-man badass army soldier attitudes of the Soldiers... In fact, I don't remember having that spine chilling feeling at all whilst playing it, thats something every PA should have.
The sound is great, I lthought the music it played during cutscenes was done exceedingly well and sound during gameplay was okay, although the little jingle it played after every battle got a little repetitive and annoying, but only a mild hinderence.
Multiplayer, the factor that usually is the decider in a game failing or succeeding. Going back to what I said earlier about Halo = Rushing in and Gears = Value of life, this is proved further by the multiplayer, in Halo there is respawn, so who cares if you die, you can just come back, in Gears there is none, so cover appears to be your best friend in a firefight. Because of the high chance of death and zero chance of respawn, you learn to rely on your teammates a bit more, especially in situations of firefights. There is a lot of arguing about the 'noobishness' of certain weapons such as the chainsaw or the grenade tagging, but to be honest I ignore all of this, Epic put it in the game, therefore it's meant to be there. The only thing that annoys me about the multiplayer, is the maps, every map bar two just don't interest me, Gridlock and Canals are the only two worth playing in my honest opinion.
I think thats about it, although I'll probably think of something in half hour or so and just add it on.
Note: This review is purely my opinion, everyone is entitled to one, including you, if you don't like my thoughts or opinion, fair enough, but don't flame. Flamers will be blatantly ignored and will recieve no acknowledgement from me. Constructive Criticism however will be welcomed.
Thanks,
Kitari.
