I... quit WoW today

I quit after my guild was starting to die. I guess there was still something in the pre 4.1 version of WoW that kinda held the game together. Dunno what it was. Something in the game made me wanna run a raid every week with my guildies despite a hectic schedule but it was a lot of fun.I look back on it and feel kinda sad really. None of the MMOs out there give me the feeling I used to get even up to 4.1 in WoW. But yea, I will admit I kinda wrecked my freshman year of college playing WoW but it was nice cause I really did end up talking to my guild mates outside WoW and it helped cause I didn't have friends IRL in freshman year (I played WoW BECAUSE I had no friends IRL back then). Quit start of sophomore year. Anyways I still go and check out the new content on the PTR. Yea, I am cheap like that.

Funny thing is, it is never the game that particularly comes before anything, it's the people you play with, the social experience.. I guess.

I know that feeling. Towards the end I had no real interest in WoW as a game, but merely as a social tool. It was where all of my friends (scattered around the country) were.

As for me I quit at the end of WotLK right after my guild beat 25 man Arthas with...like one stack of the buff. I just wanted to go out on a high note. Came back for Cata for a little bit, but lost interest very quickly. I hated what they did to my favorite specs (feral and affliction). Even though its been years since ive played, I still do not have any desire to play (even though some of my friends tried to get me back in).

Although I have been hankering for a MMO, just not WoW. Nothing will replace vanilla or BC WoW in my heart though.

It's like you sang a siren song...damn...all those feelings...I can 100% relate...miss alot of the old good stuff...and wish things we're so streamlined...I quit pretty much after WotLK, just no interest. None of my friends played anymore, it just sucked...

I can relate to that, but in other words, you quit a little after Activision took over, which, if I remember correctly was the same time they made ToT.

Too bad the gaming industry is suffering from these issues. Nobody will risk making a high budget MMO after what EA did to SW:Tor and if Blizzard finally manages to knock WoW over.

I would go and play a good MMO to be honest, something that feels like WoW did, after I first tried it. But it looks like good and original games are a risk nowadays.

Yeah, I quit some months ago.
It was just going downhill from Burning Crusade to the later add ons.
Things got even more and more repetitive. Archaeology was a HUGE letdown. The Pokemon battles were meh and turned out to be part of the new cashgrab machinery that is the online store.
They kept announcing that "SOON"tm there would be visual updates for the older races that look like smutches on your screen compared to the pandaren. The daily quest flood... oh god, don't get me started "you don't have to do them you know herp derp"
PvP became more and more of a letdown with all the AoE CC Bullshit. The introduction of LFG made grouping for dungeons bland, boring and unpersonal.

It became work, especially with the daily quest madness. Pure fucking coalmining. It always kinda was that way but they pushed it to the extreme.

Well, It's fun to rant about it. Good on you that you quit, Write a list why you quit World of Dailycraft. Makes "just taking a peek to see what's changed" and having you spend even more money to run the hamsterwheel harder. You'll probably feel an urge to go back sooner or later. The list will help

Good for you I suppose for sticking to your own decision. I'm gonna carry on playing though. I've always enjoyed the game just casually, been playing it for about 6 years now. Yeah I know things have gone downhill, however I still find the game relaxing. At the moment I just collect mounts, I find it gives me something to work towards and I have fun all the more when I have friends online to run around with. I'm also really looking forward to the next patch. Gonna take down Hellcream! Yay! Admittedly I've never been addicted to the game, only ever playing it a couple of hours a day at most, sometimes an extra hour if there was a raid or something. I do not regret the time I've spent on WoW at all, I've met some amazing friends and people on there and I have some fantastic memories of it. I did stop playing for a while, opting to go for free to play MMO's and Guild Wars 2. None of them gave me the feeling that WoW did.

About the only thing I take beef with is when people think that "the last X amount of years could've been spent doing something more productive."

Life isn't all about productivity. Hell that's not just MMO's, that's gaming in general. It's one big "waste of time", but if it brings you joy then it's worth every minute. If the only thing that mattered was "productivity", we'd literally work ourselves to the grave. I'll pass on that, thanks.

Pretty much this. If it makes you happy then it is worth it. The thing I take issue with is the people who say "yeah, now you can go out and start living!" as if they were being held back before and not enjoying their time before. I used to spend about 4 - 5 hours a day just writing, never did anything with my writing, but now I've stopped giving that as much time as I used to I don't regret a single thing. It filled my evenings with joy and it was never a waste of time to me.

Life isn't all about productivity. Hell that's not just MMO's, that's gaming in general. It's one big "waste of time", but if it brings you joy then it's worth every minute.

In most MMOs you'll find a peculiar and somewhat neurotic subset of players whose approach to the game is all about productivity. Everything has to be optimized for maximum efficiency, all aspects of the experience obsessively tailored to minimize the amount of time spent 'grinding content' (i.e 'playing the game') and maximize the quantity or quality of loot. When a game has been reduced to the point that the 'gameplay' (awful word) has become merely an obstacle to the procurement of virtual items, you have to question whether players are really getting joy out of it. It can take some people a remarkably long time to come to the realization that they are not, and an equally long time to actually act on that realization.

Well, people are just as addictive, so you keep on playing a game you've lost interest in for a long time, just to be with them, then one day to realize, that you're alone, because they've moved on and you're just sort of doing the things you were doing while socializing with them, out of habit.

Looking back at my half-finished projects and at the time I farmed the Insane for about 2 months, 12 hours a day, every day, tssshyeah, I could have been more productive. I'm an artistic person and art is a productive hobby for me, which I have mostly neglected in the last couple of years. Maybe if I started doing that a bit earlier, I would have at least a glint of promise for my future in front of me by now. Get it? Maybe it's a part of growing up - deciding to focus on the more important stuff in light of my future. This is not a generalization, it's about me. It's not about the people who have these things alredy, not about the dads who can afford some free time in the afternoon. Not even about the grandparents who just play for fun (we had a grandma in our guild, she was pretty kick-ass!). Maybe this is unrelated to you personally, or your experiences, there's nothing wrong with that, but I'm going out on a limb here and say that it's not something me - or you can generalize.

Color me curious. How is FF14? I've heard some good things about it, but I'm thinking I'll wait to even think about it until the PS4 comes out and. Largely a money concern, but also not sure I wanna jump into a new MMO.

As far as the PS3 version goes, it's visually beautiful and intuitively awesome. I've only played the beta for a little while, but I can tell you that this is the first MMO for a console that has an incredibly simplistic interface. You can actually play the game with a controller and swear you were playing a regular third person view RPG and not even think it's an MMORPG. Going from keyboard to controller for the occasional communication becomes second nature, once you get used to it.

I also got the early access from pre-ordering it. So come tomorrow, my toons and I are going to have a fun time in the universe of Eorzea while summoning Primals.

I got out of WoW at the very end of Burning Crusade. One of the big reasons I got out was because I started to absolutely hate Blizzard...specifically because they decided to break StarCraft II into 3 separate games. To me that's nothing but a cash-grab and no one will ever convince me otherwise. I've heard people say "Well each campaign is actually as big as the original SC, so that's why it's 3 separate games." But more often than not those very same people go on to say "But a lot of the campaign is just fluff...you could probably cut it down to 10 missions that actually have real meaning to the story." 10 Missions, eh? Sounds a lot like the size of an original SC campaign. As such it seems to me that they were intending to make it all a single game then just decided to inject a bunch of filler in order to justify breaking up the campaigns into 3 separate games. I know that the games being broken up might not matter to a lot of people who are more interested in the multiplayer to begin with, but personally I was never that great at multiplayer RTS's, but I found SC's singleplayer to be very enjoyable.

But we're not here to discuss SC, we're here to discuss WoW. For me I just got bored with it an could no longer justify paying the subscription just to have a chance at having a chance at getting the loot I needed from raids. That and the fact that a lot of guild drama started brewing up towards the end and after I left the game, a friend of mine told me that the guild I was in ended up breaking up about 2 weeks after I left. It was fun while it lasted, I won't deny that, but like you I also took a look over what my life had become, all the time I had wasted on the game and for what...a shinier hat for my character than the one I was using before? Lich King had been announced and was around the corner...I had JUST gotten top-tier equipment for my Warlock, and I knew that if the opening to Lich King was going to be anything like the opening to BC, many of the quest-reward greens for the new expansion would outclass the top-tier gear that I had sunk countless hours and nights into acquiring...essentially negating all the effort I put into getting them in the first place. So with that on the horizon, I decided that enough was enough and took my leave.

Considering what I've heard about with regards to how the game has changed since I left (leveling up for new characters has become ridiculously fast, people get mounts at lvl 20, etc) it just seems like they've taken all the bight out of the game, the challenge that made it fun in the first place. Given that, I presume that I picked a good time to go ahead and back out.

I left WoW back in June after I just couldn't take anymore of the current end-game. Always good to see another person leaving, even if for different reasons. Makes me feel less alone! XD

If ye ain't having fun it's time to move on. I say this as someone still avidly invested in WoW, I don't try to make friends and guildies feel pressured to stay. Some of them have been going at this for EIGHT years, if you're fed up with WoW I really don't blame ya.


I do not however advocate bashing the game to justify your being bored with it because you feel you need a more righteous reason TO leave. I see enough of these clowns. You're bored, and you're frustrated that your being bored is causing you to leave friends behind. So calling WoW the root of all evil is just making you look like an idiot.

It's a well crafted world/mmo/experience. And it deserves the attention it has/got. Just enjoy what good times you did have, and move along.

Its a time filler. Its pointless to play alone (my pov). Its something to do when you've got nothing to do.

I quit playing seriously after Ulduar. I buy a month now and then, when theres a new expansion pack to check things out, but its the same old thing. And lets face it, the game has never been more fun when we were 5 manning scholo/blackrock spire.

Move on. Play something thats ACTUALLY fun...and return for a bit when you've got time to kill. Thats all its good for.

Wow. Just thinking about how long it has been since I quit WoW is really quite staggering. I remember when I quit, it was ages ago.

I quit WoW before Burning Crusade came out.

I've never had a good experience with MMOs. I briefly played Everquest in 2001, but I had a poor experience. The guilds on EQ at that time were extremely clannish, and I found the game mechanics frustrating and counter-intuitive so I quit. I only started playing WoW years later due to Peer pressure. Most of my friends started playing it and soon it became impossible to socialize with them at all outside of WoW. I would go over to their houses to hang out, only to be ignored for hours on end while the earstwhile host played WoW. Stopping only occasionally to show off his gear or a quest or make some joke that only made sense to players of WoW. Finally I ended up playing WoW just to socialize with them.

I joined in order to spend time with my friends, but I found the game's actual mechanics to be very repetitive, frustrating and unrewarding. I also really disliked the fact that Warriors were practically useless while a good Shaman could easily solo a Dungeon. Once I moved off to college I quit WoW and never looked back. I still cannot understand how anyone could stay interested in that game for any length of time.

I've dabbled in other MMOs off and on but they never held my interest. All of the ones I tried just ended up being WoW with a different coat of paint. The only one I really felt I could get into was EVE online, but the current state of the game's economy turned me off. Chinese ISK farmers and widespread price fixing schemes had conspired to create an environment where buying ISK from a Chinese farmer was an absolute NECESSITY just to get off the ground.

I've not played an MMO in years and I have little desire to. I am a little curious about games like Guild Wars 2 or other attempts to break the WoW mold, but I've yet to find one that could keep my interest.

It's been almost two years since I quit WoW. Cata just stopped being fun and more like a chore. Sure I still enjoyed hanging out with my guild but it just wasn't enough anymore. I've been tempted to go back and check it out but have resisted. The server we played on has all but died so my guild switched to a different one which has made staying away even easier. There's no way to ever replicate the feelings of awe and wonder when I first started playing so that helps out, too. I still miss it from time to time though.....enough that it makes me want to check out other MMOs but I don't want to get sucked in like I did with WoW.
