I really should like Uncharted...

I was so excited to try them that I bought BOTH of the games at the same time.

What drew me in:

The series has locations that aren't more gray and brown corridors, characters I actually LIKE, platforming, very little forced Sixaxis use, a great soundtrack, and it is drop dead gorgeous.

But I just can't get into it. The shooting is terrible, the platforming is unintuitive (The ledge is to my right when I'm swinging on this vine, why do I have to press up to jump to it? After dying like 10 times trying to press right.)

This was all from the first game, mind you. So, I thought to myself: "Well, there's a reason Uncharted 2 gets all the praise!"

So, I booted up the sequel, expecting improved platforming and shooting, making the game perfect. Played for about 30-45 minutes. I got the same shooting, and the same finicky platforming. Had a few issues getting through the train because Nate wouldn't do what I asked. It's almost as bad as Cole from Infamous magically gluing himself to a ledge as you try and jump off the building. Difference being that it isn't LETHAL when Cole doesn't do what you ask.

Now, I'm not a hard man to please with games. I've liked nearly every game I've played in the past year, from Bayonetta to Dante's Inferno, Bad Company 2 to Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age to Final Fantasy 13.

So, what are your thoughts on Uncharted?

I don't share any of your problems.

The shooting works perfectly fine for me, and I've never had problems with the platforming.

Though the thing I love most is the cinematic feeling it all has to it. Makes it feel fresh while playing it even if it doesn't actually do anything new.

Terrible shooting? Hell Drake is one of the few characters I know that can fire sideways from his gun.

I'm a fan of Pulp-Fiction writing so the story is right up my alley. The shooting isn't terrible but used entirely too much. I loved the platforming sequences (thank you Naughty Dog for evening out the shooting sequences and platforming areas in the sequel.) The game is one of the finest looking games of this generation. The locales are excellent. (In the second one more so, the first games locales get a bit repetitive.) I have had some of the some control issues you had reportedly had. The multi-player was fun for a while but patches ruined it's fairness. I guess it ultimately boils down to what you like. I personally didn't like Final Fantasy 13, but I liked Uncharted 2.

I think the game is amazing. The characters are quirky and three dimensional, the plot is easy to follow, yet interesting, and the gameplay is stellar. I'm not sure what to type; out of the thirteen real life friends that have the game, no one has disputed that the platforming is polished, easy and satisfying, and that the shooting was fluid and tense. I'm not one to accuse, (especially online) but could your problems have stemmed from a lack of, skill? Just asking.

Didn't see any shooting issues. Hell, Nate is the great spider monkey who understood that if he is in cover, and there is an enemy behind him where he doesn't need to stand up to shoot, he doesn't. I don't think Marcus Fenix or the blokes in Vegas ever got that right.

Platforming realistically is always finicky. Play Tomb Raider: Underworld and Uncharted seems like a godsend.

Calumon: Shouldn't you be killing Giant Mechanical Nuke equipped Dinosaurs?

To be fair...

I'm at the part where you meet up with Elena and get on the jet ski, and the game's been making me do a lot of long range combat with little besides and AK and a pistol. Mostly the pistol.

Also, I'm not a big fan of watching movies, seeing less than 10 a year (including DVDs!), so cinematic generally is a minus is my book.

Put it down to the uncharted series just..not being for you. Personally, i loved them both, second one moreso, i played it back to back second time through with my favourite guns and cooler outfits i unlocked, i think it's one of the greatest adventure games ever made, and since no game is perfect, it's own insignificant imperfections jsut solidify it as one of the best games in the last 10 years.

Doubtful. I've beaten three CoD games on Veteran, both Gears on Insane, Bayonetta on Hard mode, and done a challenge mode run in R&C: Deadlocked.

Oh god, I haaaaaaaaaaaaate the Jet Ski part. It's so ass.

And fair enough, but I don't see how a lack of interest in films makes cinematic sequences a minus.

I didn't have issues with the shooting. The platforming I think suffered mostly because they had to make Nate look realistic when he did things, so he moves in an odd, sluggish choreographed way compared to other platformers.

But I really just liked the game, number 2 I mean. The first one I liked all the way up until the end. The end I threw my controller across the room and turned off the PS3 and walked away from it. Kill me ten times in rapid succession will you! I don't think so!

Ahem... anyway, it could just be you are having difficulties because you just finished Ratchet. Ratchet is an extremely well balanced platformer. You can't really compare the two. Uncharted is more of an action movie with platforming elements. There are bound to be some annoying parts, but the whole of the game is worth trying to get used to the mechanics to experience it.

Oh, it's not in this case. Note the generally. But I mean in terms of things like automatic slow-mo and the like. Camera angle cutting. You know.

Oooh, I see.

I don't really consider things like that cinematic, just silly.

Indeed, the last game to do that shit was Wet. But the soundtrack made up for it. I like Surfer Rock?. Who knew? I know that I didn't until I played that game. I beat it, never touched again...Because I'd heard all the songs.

First game: Good ideas, not so god execution and WAY Too much action. It was the first game I can remember playing thinking: "God I'm so tired of all these enemies, let me explore some or just rest for gods sake!".
The story was decent, voice acting very good and script way above average imo. Just too much action.

Second game: Fixed mostly everything that was wrong with the first imo. More weapons, better gunplay more story, bigger more epic etc.

I'd give the first game a 7/10 and the second a 9/10 or so.

I liked all of it. I liked the cover based combat and the platforming felt pretty smooth. On top of that, the graphics are all really, really good throughout... mostly.

But I think I'm blinded by my fanboyism for Naughty Dog. Liking every other game they made before Uncharted, I don't think I have it in me to dislike one of their games.
That said, Uncharted 2's online can kiss my bahookie. If a match is decided by whoever can get to the grenade launcher first, you screwed up somewhere.

God, Wet was terrible. Hated that game.

It was like John Woo's Stranglehold but without nostalgia goggles and worse controls.

Fair enough. So You completed Number One then? Good show.

Calumon: If you thought shooting is bad in Uncharted, try Digimon World 4. :S
