marvel recently released a bunch of new venom issues and something funny is in them. here is a couple of pictures

now there are some of you who dont know whats going on in this picture so let me clarify a bit

this is the tau skyray missile gunship from warhammer 40k tabletop by GW. and the the t'au sept logo. its been cleanly ripped off from what i assume was DoW.
so when are we going to see the copyright war between the mouse and GW?

EDIT: more info if anyone is interested

To add to the OP, the usual colour scheme for Tau stuff is along the lines of:

Also, the walker in the pic is very Tau like, but that's fairly generic.

Anyway, when I first saw that pic, it didn't look drawn, it looked like a photoedit of a pic of an actual model.

that is possible

some guy ripped DoW models and he probably took them. upscaled a few aspects (the drone hatch. you can actually see the ground from behind it) and voila!

Not a flattering art style...and why on Earth would they have holes going through the sides of the tanks? It looks like they didn't even bother to complete the model.

The funny part is that the last time I remember hearing about table top games and art stealing was when BattleTech lifted a bunch of units from Macross. Which they actually got permission for actually, but Harmony Gold pitched a fit and got SunRise's licenses to FASA invalidated...

In this case, regardless of the truth, Marvel is likely to stomp GamesWorkshop in court, or buy the company outright. Because Marvel has Disney, who basically has all the money in the world effectively.

Unfortunately, that's not how things work in courts in the US, whoever has the most money eventually wins, even when they have no legal leg to stand on. Basically Marvel will be able to just sue GW into the ground, despite GW being totally legally in the right.

One question: what if they actually ARE Tau? Marvel's 616 universe has a ludicrously long list of crossovers, I couldn't even begin to name all the things that are on the 616 Earth that aren't Marvel's properties.

Or this could just be a fuckup, in which case Marvel buying them up to prevent being bogged down in a lawsuit would probably be for the best.

Something to keep in mind is that for a completely obviously open and shut case is that even the biggest corporation will loose despite the problems of the system, and it's made larger by the fact when they loose they have to pay the opponent's legal fees. Marvel would more likely settle our of court or simply buy the company outright to make it a non-issue.

So that's what that little disc on the side is meant to be?

Marvellous. I can feel the artistic effort leap off the page.

I'd imagine it's also why you can see right through the rear of it despite the perspective. From that angle it seems like you should be seeing the inside of the ship's hull on the other side, not right through to what's behind it. The surface normals - the direction from which 'light' is reflect off the surface and it renders - don't seem to be set to two-sided on this object.

*Peers*. Yes, you...can. How did I not notice something like that before??? Blimey, that makes it look even more unprofessional. :/

I think my eyes must have just glazed over it because it was so...blurry.

...Oh my sweet junipers, I just looked again and noticed they forgot to upscale the rocket pods, turrets and thrusters. The thing gets worse every damn time I look!

That thing should be a disgrace to any self-respecting artist, copyright breach or not.

That's not the case, because they can just saturate GW with frivolous unrelated lawsuits until they go bankrupt trying to defend themselves. That crap happens all the time. But my major prediction is that GW will get bought, probably by Disney, who will just license GWs stuff to Marvel. That is if GW even decides to press charges, they have to press charges to maintain their IP ownership integrity... It's still hard for them to do anything because Disney will defend Marvel to the hilt, which is a losing position for any company that isn't Disney.

While I wouldn't be shocked if Disney did buy out the company, when it comes to lawsuits the vast majority of these type of situations actually never go to court at all due to out of court settlements. It's like people arrested for pretty much any crime that isn't a major offence, most make some form of deal that X will be done and any lawsuit dropped as a result. Unless they do in fact intend to buy the company, it's not worth Disney's effort to even fight the claim but instead just pay up. This isn't a game where your opponent going under is the victory condition, it's how much money you make at the end of the year that is.

Well first of all this is a civil case, so it's not really comparable to a criminal case. Still you don't know Disney very well do you? They're the ones who established current copyright law to work in their favor in the first place. This company is just big, greedy, and spiteful enough to sue another company into the ground for looking at them funny. Worse still Disney might just be motivated to push legislation that lets them become enough of a black hole to suck in the entire entertainment industry. This is freaking Disney we're talking about, throwing petty lawsuits so they can eat a broken company up on the cheap is their freaking M.O. and it doesn't matter a good god damn how much it costs them either.

I didn't realize this, but apparently Marvel takes from GW all the time.

Part of me feels sad that even some comic artists don't bother to draw anymore.

see also on the 'hammerhead' portion at the front of the tank, they've done the same thing - the disc thing carrying either missiles or gattling guns is floating in empty space on the render, having not been upsacaled too.

Its not exactly the first copying I've seen (ignoring artists who straight up trace porn or photo models), but at least the others threw in some mdifications (even if it was only replacing a girl in power armour with a girl in her undies)

EDIT:

oops, you already noticed, thats what I get for not reading all the way through
