Turn it to 35% difficulty. It's more fun that way, less enemies have stupid amounts of health.

Yeh I putted the difficulty on 40% because Oblivion has a very strange difficulty settings.
0% = one hit and enemies will die.
100% one hit and you will die (and enemies are like breaking down a brick wall with a toothpick).
the beginning is always the hardest (and stupid) part in the TES games.
enjoy your 400+ hours of gameplay.

Starting out was kind of daunting, but now that I have almost a thousand hours into it I feel comfortable saying this.

Do the first quest (Deliver the Amulet) in the main quest line to get free leather armor and weapons from the priory and a free horse.

Then go kill someone sneakily and go to sleep to do the Dark Brotherhood, because when you complete that you'll have some sweet magic items and plenty of loot and levels.

From there you should go do the guild of your choice but I always go Thieves, Mages, Fighters (Fighters is the worst in my opinion).

Anytime you need a quick level or cash then go do The Arena for a little while.

Do the Daedric Quests as soon as you can! Goldbrand, The Skeleton Key, Umbra, and Azura's star are some of the sweetest loot in the game.

Jump everywhere. Seriously that isn't a joke. Athletics has little solid affects while Acrobatics can save your life and make quests so much easier. Just jump freaking everywhere no matter what.

How are you playing? Since this is your first playthrough and you're in the Mges Guild, I guess you're going for a magic character (Not necessary in Oblivion to be a magic-based character to join the Mages guild, in contrary to Morrowind where it was very restrictive).

If so, make sure you stack up on magicka potions, and keep a weapon at hand to block enemy attacks (shields lower spell efficiency) Also, be wary of leveling up, at higher levels, the difficulty becomes ridiculously skewered against you (unless you install a mod that changes the enemy level rosters). Apart from this, I can't say much other than to practice in the combat system.

Loot all the stuff you find that isn't owned by any one and sell it. Either use god mode to haul it all back to town or make several trips back and forth.

Just play a nord/orc warrior with heavy armor. You can never go wrong with a warrior.

Pretty much this. The game gets harder as you level up, because your enemies level up with you and do so faster as well (unless you are efficient levelling). You're actually better off not levelling up at all.

Tell that to the random bandits on the road, who have apparently saved up enough money to come fully equipped with glass armour and daedric weaponry now...

And still ask for a measily 400 gold coins, even though their armour is worth enough to buy the entire Imperial City.

Mages tend to be squishy ... so I recommend working on your heavy armour, block, and armorer skills .. 10 points in any combination of those per level, and thereby picking up +5 endurance when you level up.

It makes the difference between being a glass cannon and a spellcasting tank at level 15.

If you're good at predicting and adjusting for projectile drop, then go for a stealthy archer class and join the Dark Brotherhood. Otherwise I recommend being a mage.

Never get kicked out of the Mages guild as the mission to rejoin is a pain in the arse.

This. OMG I hate this mission right now. I accidentally killed a fellow mage during a mission because he walked right in front of me as I shot a magic arrow at our target. I didn't find out until after I tried to finish the mission. UGH! Trying to find 20 vampires so I can steal their ashes is stupid. I can never find a substantial gathering of them and I only need 2 more!

Plus I found out that you can't complete the Cure for Vampirism quest because the mage you have to talk to in order to start it is the same guy making you find the daedric hearts and vampire dust. F***. MY. LIFE!!!!

Make sure you grab the +5 multipliers every time you level, or at least +3 or +4, read the manual or a wiki site if you don't know what that is.. If you don't then the game will get very difficult as you level because of the enemy scaling. Don't lower the difficulty though, the game becomes way to easy and boring if you do.. if your on the PC and don't want to bother with the leveling shit then I suggest the mod 'Oblivion XP' because it will make your life a whole lot easier without having to resort to dropping the difficulty.

Also even if you a mage, leveling Heavy Armour is always useful, if your getting beat down on you can always equip it, use a Speed attribute boosting spell and tail it haha.

Lastly, DO NOT grind one easy to level skill like Alchemy or Conjuration to fly through the levels because you run the risk of gimping your character later on, make sure you grab those multipliers!

I always start off heading straight to the arena, gets you some decent cash, weapons and levels.

Next do whatever you like, I would hold off doing the main story though 'cos shutting down oblivion gates gets you seriously awesome stuff at higher levels. If you do the main story you can't shut down gets yourself.

When you hit level 10 look up how to get the skeleton key, really easy quest that gives you a lock pick that never snaps and raises your kill by about 50 points in lock picking.

Completing the deadric god quests gives awesome stuff, so do them ASAP.

Jump like tigger from whinnie the pooh, it helps a bunch. You can also leve yourself swimming into a wall for hours so you can run faster, which is great for getting around 'cos sometimes it can be a real chore.

I remember my 300 hour save game on that, was the leader of every faction.

try a norde heavy armor spell sword born under the ritual u get a decent daily heal and a minor heal so u can heal on the fly and not burn through ur potions really quickly early on.
thats what i did and now i dont even fight anymore just sneak attack one guy and use the staff of worms on him.
