Why not go with all of them? Fable: Anniversary is coming out early February at reduced price (it's the original Fable and Fable: The Lost Chapters with HD graphics and a whole mess of tweaks), and you can get Fable 2 & 3 for cheap as well.

I enjoyed the hell out of 2 & 3 (never was able to get the original), but a lot of people seem to dislike the series, but I think that may be in part to ol' Peter's huge claims of the series that were never really present in the final games. But again, with them being cheap at this point, even if you're not so fond of them, it should still be worth the price.

As everyone above has mentioned the Fable games decline in quality as they go on. First one is the best, though my main problem with it is the PC version has no controller support. Yeah, you can play it on mouse and keyboard but its really a controllery (?) kinda game, like most 3rd person action games. Hopefully the anniversary edition will add controller support cos then I'll absolutely plow through the first one and probably shamble through the second one just for Stephen Fry's dulcet tones.

Personally i would recommend avoiding Fable 3 as much as possible, fable 2 was meh but Fable the Lost Chapters was awesome.

Fable: The Lost Chapters on PC was my first experience (I believe lost chapters was PC only anyway?)

I would def recommend it if you want to play fable. Fable 2 was solid and fun as is Fable 3 but Fable, the original/first one was just fantastic. Enjoyed every minute of, especially being a sniper and making peoples heads pop off, that was awesome.

They have different strengths, I like Fable 3 first because it's my totally-not-playing-with-dolls-game thanks to having a clothing but not armor system and Fable 3 has better inventory management for collecting all the outfits. But it's endgame is incredibly frustrating.

Play Fable: The Lost Chapters and Fable 2, then forget the series existed, because you'll just be continuoysly disappointed.

Well my opinions so far. Kind of playing both, so far it's 4 hours each and the combat system in Fable 2 sucks compared to 3. 3 is far more clean and I am not constantly being blocked by a bush or a root while exploring. It is strange to play either one of them, it feels extremely childish atmosphere wise, almost like it belongs on the Wii, but the tiny features it produces really makes you feel like a disease ridden, killer psychopath in disneyland.

BTW is there a way to turn off that golden trail sparkle quest thing, it gets on my nerves when I just want to run around? It was the reason why I slaughtered everyone in that Oak village with the monks

That's what I've been thinking, it's one of the games that brought me over to the 360 in the first place.

What can i say...silly humour with no challenge in the gameplay at all. That sums up all 3 games. None of them are particularly good although the intention with the first one was kinda cool. Sadly it all went to nowhere and the series ended up with a game where it is nearly impossible to die during combat.

I'd say style over substance explains everything

What do you guys recommend?
Fable 3.

Not a great game, honestly - none of them are particularly good - but it at least attempts to do something interesting with the morality system and the last third-or-so questions the more traditional usage of good/evil you find in many RPGs. The first one is blah, and has a rubbish targetting system. The second one is OK, but you're likely to get bored halfway through. In the third there's a pretty big twist towards the end where you achieve your goal of overthrowing the corrupt ruler and then actually have to deal with the difficulties of his job. It's kinda revolutionary in a landscape where the choice is usually between being good or evil for the sake of being evil.

Of course, it's somewhat undermined by how incredibly easy it is for a halfway-competent player to game the system and remain a force of pure goody-two-shoesiness, but still. Points for trying.

The first fable is the best one, then the 2. Fable 3 is absolute shit in my opinion was bored to tears at the simplified combat. Also the 3rd one has the most ludicrous dlc money grab scheme. In a game where there is a heavy emphasis in customization you have to pay for colour swatches to paint your outfit!. In the two previous games you had standard weapons and legendary weapons. The legendary weapons were uniquely designed and each had a tiny back story. In Fable 3 all the weapons are basically made up of four pieces that get shuffled around to make a "unique sword". Atrocious, I cannot fathom why anyone would recommend such a lazily made game.

I never noticed too much hate for fable 2, it certainly doesn't deserve it. Now fable 3 on the other hand... deserves everything it gets. Do you know when something is made in such a bad way that it actually gets you annoyed? That was my experience with fable 3.

I doubt this will help, but I kind of wish I never had played a Fable game. I'd play something good instead, were I you.
