I didn't think the first one was by the numbers at all but I could see an argument for that. So even with that if you count it, I loved JW1 (haven't seen 2 but will) for a kind of movie snobbish reason...

The camera work and editing was phenomenal. Too many action movies do the shaky cam and quick cutaways and you can't see dick because of it. JW has the camera hold still and lets you see every punch, stab, bullet, and explosion in all its actiony glory.

It helps that I fanboy over Keanu but it all boils down for me to an action movie that lets you see the freaking action.

To the OP: Just close your eyes and think of England when that scene comes up. Then you get to watch the action in all its glory and you can pretend that the puppy is still loveable and huggable and JW is just mad about his car :D

Then dont watch the first one. I didnt. You wont be confused. (Atleast for not having watched the first, though there are plenty of "What?" aspects)

Because it's by-the-numbers done right. Watch Taken 3 and tell me it's as fun to watch, I dare you.
Oh because it does not have Shaky Cam and the action is clear it means its good?

Please even if it did not have Shaky Cam bullshit the action was still rather bland.

If I want to watch an Action movie I watch Jackie Chan: Legend of the Drunken Master or the first Mortal Kombat movie or Herucles with Dwayne Johnson.

It sounds to me like you just don't care for guns; actually, I agree: reliance on realistic guns all but the most creative action movies bland, but John Wick is plenty creative in how he shoots everyone differently. In fact, the worst that can be said about him is that he wastes some of his bullets for no reason.

It's not just the action, either; the script treats the audience with respect by letting us figure out for ourselves several things without stating it outright.
If its about Guns than that First Person Russian movie did it better.

Gah I still need to see Hardcore Henry; that FPS music video those guys did is amazing. There ought to be more people people doing that kind of stuff.

What made Hardcore Henry so good was how it perfectly represented to non-gamers what it's like to play a First-Person Shooter, going so far as to dedicate several scenes to homage specific games like Mirror's Edge and Halo. Of course, if your method of proving that a work of art is bad is that something else did it better, then you kinda failed.
In the end I was unimpressed with John Wick.

Yes you should [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.945357-tippy2k2-tells-you-what-to-think-Hardcore-Henry] :D

Hardcore and Wick are very different action movies but I would highly recommend them both.

I love Jackie Chan movies and I haven't seen that Hercules movie, but I fail to see how those comparisons contribute anything to you not liking John Wick, if you don't care for it that's fine but it does not change the fact that John Wick was a tightly directed, well choreographed, well photographed atmospheric film with fantastic subtle world building, what it did right is that it sold John Wick as a badass while implying so many things about the mafia in that world that you didn't need to see any of it, and it's fantastic in that regard.

If you do not care for atmosphere, World-Building and gun action that's fine but comparing the film to other films that have nothing in common is completely pointless.

I found the World Building to be very rushed. I mean the lore presented in the movie is better suited in a TV series format.

And the athmosphere is something I am already familiar with.

All I can say is I don't think its a failure of a film, I am just saying the praise it gets is a bit too much.

Just like with Logan or Mad Max: Fury Road the thing is that we rarely get films like these anymore so when one comes along and it's good, people tend to overhype them, that does not change the fact that these films are good and to people that have seen a shit-ton of movies they seem to be of lesser quality than what people say they are.

Shame some others like The Nice Guys go completely unnoticed.

I'd advise you not to go see the sequel, because it's truly fucking terrible. Just watch the first one and leave it at that, you'll thank me.

You can watch 2 without seeing the original. It won't be confusing though I'd argue part of the fun of the sequel is seeing the world-building.

But you can only watch Drunken Master/MK/Ong Bak so many times. I found the first JW to stand out because amidst a lot of other crappy thriller/chase/shooty fight scenes, it had enough confidence in it's action that it didn't need to rely on shaky cam. I remember the first couple Bourne movies were so great in their pacing and suspense, and the action was awesome but was ruined by having such a hard time telling what was going on. Only once they toned it down did it really become enjoyable to watch, because that's what you watch an action movie for.

All I'm trying to say is, I'd rather watch a semi-bland action scene with no shaky cam, rather than an excellent one with only shaky cam. Mind you, there are hundreds of series/movies without it that are just plain boring to watch as well, I just don't count JW as one of them.

Aside Hercules those movies are pretty old, though. And while they might have good fight scenes, when was the last movie that had such good gunplay like John Wick? I recall maybe Shoot Em All back in 2007?

JW is great on a technical level. It's not even just about the shaky cam or lack thereof(in this case). How about not depending on 1434 cuts to try and give your scene false sense of dynamics, for example?

1434 cuts is the same amount of cuts it takes Liam Neeson to jump a fence!

How so? I quite liked it. Stylish as all hell with some gorgeous locations and visuals, great music, well choreographed action, and more Keanu Reeves shooting people. Admittedly the plot is dumb as hell, but it's not like the first movies revenge premise was particularly grand either.

I genuinely struggle to see why someone who liked the first movie wouldn't like the second, which is basically just more of the same thing the first movie offered.

First of all, there's no motivation. The plot of the first movie was silly, but it completely acknowledges that, and we as the audience could get behind why John Wick'd be pissed off. The sequel has nothing, except 'Yeah, I guess you're gonna have to go kill some more people, cuz reasons'. John Wick by himself isn't the least bit interesting. What made him engaging is that this solemn badass would go on a rampage of revenge because someone killed his dog. It was stupid while at the same time being sweet, and endearing.

Secondly, it presents its lore as way more interesting then it actually is. In the first movie the lore was a nice bit of window dressing that was organically implemented into the script. We got this tiny peak behind the curtain. The sequel just goes full exposition, and can't seem to shut up about how awesome and intriguing it's underground society is. It really isn't.

And lastly, the action sequences sucked. Nothing creative was done with the shoot-outs. It was just Keanu shooting a bunch of dudes, then he wrestles one guy to the ground while he shoots some more dudes, then he executes ground-dude. That seriously happens during every fucking shoot-out, you could've turned it into a drinking game. And I know people like to joke about Keanu Reeves not aging, but the guy is still over 50 and here it shows. He's just sluggish and lumbering and not as swift as his character is supposed to be.

The only good thing in the movie was Ian McShane, but besides him John Wick 2 couldn't have been more mindnumbingly boring if it was presented to me with stickfigures on paper.
