Someone wants to be a critic? Haven't heard that before.

OK, so instead of acting like an asshole, I'll tell you this: Review the latest game that just came out (AC2 or DA:O, MW2 may be played out) or take a game you hold dear and make a review that you post here. Then let people see what they think about it.

For inspiration, just look at other written reviews.

OK before this guy gets flamed I'd just like to remind everyone that if no-one decided they wanted to become a critic, there would be no critics.

Now, I'm no expert but surely it's at least similar to pursuing any other kind of career. Why not seek professional careers advice elsewhere?

Criticising shit is easy. It's doing it in style without coming across as an asshole that separates the men from the boys. Try not to focus too much on swearing, try not to just sound like you're whinging, and above all, do NOT try and be Zero Punctuation. The guys a good critic, but we don't need any copycats.

Then you've got some of the qualities I'd expect from a critic. Your grammar is good too.

Pick your favourite game, new or old, and write a good lengthy critique of it, what was good, why it was good, what wasn't, why it wasn't, how it could have been improved, and why you think those points could have ended up being as bad as they were, etc.

I'd say re-evaluate and re-think your options, no one really wants to be a total arsehole. Yes, critics are arseholes, intent on destroying everything good about something because they have no real talent themselves.

As said here, you not only need to develop a style that's yours, it helps to be funny/amusing in your reviews, and fair. I'm not a game critic, but I am an amateur writer (Short stories), and I can tell you one thing my old ELA teacher told me. "If you can show your science-fiction story, to someone who doesn't read science-fiction and have them enjoy it, then your well on your way to becoming an excellent writer."

The same applies to game critiques. If you can write a critique, then show it to someone who doesn't even really care about video games, and have them enjoy it, then you've hit gold.

Really? Try and re-read the persons post. It's just one big long comment with no commas nor a full-stop in sight, forget grammar, a critic should be able to write well, and the content, in this case, is poor."I think they should be shot"...I mean really now...

To be honest, I think when asked with a question like that in the OP the answer is clear - if you don't already know the answer, your not going to become one.

I'm also going to presume you mean "reviewer" by "critic" as it would appear a very small minority of the best are decent at acting the role of game critic (it's a lot easier to write about a games good points than its bad). I'm not going to write a ton of advice I doubt you'll heed, I will however say this : post some user reviews and accept the constructive criticism - try reading the sticky at the top of the User Review forum section detailing how to write a well presented review.

Well hold on now not all criticism is bad I mean if people never criticised think of what would have happened if people never criticised assassin?s creed. Number 2 would have been full of the same stuff as number 1. No not all criticism is bad in fact in some cases it can be good.

Well, for starters, put your head in a vice and tighten it. Critics aren't paid to enjoy games. They're paid to tear out all the nibbly bits that aren't any good and talk about it. So, it pays to have the right attitude.

For starters, you have to know the field you plan to criticize very well. Video game critics know a lot about games, how they are made, what makes them good, what makes them bad. Same for every sort of media..

Check out the User Reviews forum and see what's in heavy circulation. No one wants to read reviews on the same game over and over again.

Also, when you're writing up your review, make sure to include visual aids to emphasize your point. Gaming's a visual medium, and it'll be easier to understand the "mindblowing blur effects" if you post screenshots.
