IN THE SMOKESTACKS OF LONDON
In the smokestacks of London
When the moonlight shines queer
The darkness shows things that are beyond the weird.
Such is my tale of how I descended
From sunny cobble stoned streets to darkness demented
About how man?s mind will stop at nothing to receive
The fruit?s of the labor in which he believes
But when fate decides to destroy your life
It?s only the devil that you will find.
I walk sometimes
When I cannot sleep
I believe the walking
Helps provide me with dreams.
And it was on the corner of 5th and 3rd
When I sat squatted like a bird
Tired from my walking course
That I saw something of a frightful sort.
There was a woman
Who sat on a bench
And I would?ve gone to say hello
Had it not been for the two fellows
Who materialized from the night
One grabbed her throat,
The other her hands,
They subdued her while I sat in a trance.
The distance was great enough
To part my position in the dark
From their vision across the street
But it didn?t dull the young girl?s screams.
It was then I had a choice to follow her voice
Or leave the scene and forget what I?d seen
At first I thought I?d phone the police
But then I realized that there would be
Nothing I could say for them to believe
(After all I had only seen a simple glance of the obscene)
I had no evidence or leads, and then I knew it was up to me.
So quickly I stole from my humble bench
And had crossed the street when I smelled an awful stench
It was of oil, gas, and burnt flesh
And as I recoiled something caught my attention
A small bracelet of silver dimensions
Cast on the ground from the lady that was lesioned
I picked it up and with a careful eye
Saw the small engravings on the inside
?To my one Sarah with all my heart?
Signed by
?B.R.?
I pocketed the trinket and on I went
Through that labyrinth of streets to no end
And I had almost given up hope
When I heard a scream, seldom and small
But I knew without doubt it was ?Sarah?
So onwards I raced in the direction I heard
Determined not to lose this person
I ran so hard
I ran so fast
I thought for sure my heart would explode
But alas
Fate it seemed was on my side
For I came upon an interesting sight
It was here that I saw a building of decent size
With empty smoke stacks reaching into the sky
But one was blowing a curling smoke
And it was here that I knew I found the culprit?s home
I sneaked forward as quiet and fast as I could
And slipped inside
I was underwhelmed by the sight I apprehended
I saw no terrible devices nor captors mentioned
I searched the walls and all the floors
But it seemed as if they were no more
And then I saw a scratch that the wall bore
It was an outline, and when I saw more
It?s shape assumed that of a door
Gently I pushed
Then harder I tired
And could you imagine my surprise
When the wall gave a gentle hiss
And moved away
Revealing an illuminated stairway?
And soon I came to another door
But this one an inscription bore
It was some language I didn?t understand
And didn?t seem as if made by man
And reached out with an uneasy hand
What kept me going was the silver band
I opened and then walked through
I placed my hand upon the smooth wall
And felt my way through that dark hall
And eventually came to a small room
That only had one illuminating torch
And there I saw a grotesque horror
A beast laid, was it a dog?
It was hard to see, but what I did appalled
Its legs as thick as logs
Its face was greatly mauled
Its fur was matted and damp
It had strange metal plates
That shined in the lamp
And covered his back, leg and half it?s face
Dear God, what is this place?
My feet barely whispered as I crossed the floor
And did hither to the other side of the room
But was faced again with a sudden gloom
For you see there were not one but two different paths that I could choose,
Though it seemed that both would have me lose
I took a breath
And took a step
Then choose the path to the left
And as I walked the dark possessed
The hallway and soon I caressed the wall again
As I went a vulgar smell I cannot describe
Made me shiver
And I paled my hide
When I saw what this path had led me to
It was some sort of laboratory room
But this was different
A home of horrors sure
For it held bare humans in grotesque postures
Some were sprawled onto tables,
Others attached to cables,
One was propped like on a cross
And it was this that I felt my greatest loss
For this was Sarah of that I was sure
For when I touched her skin it was still flushed
And I crumpled down and wept for her
A girl whom I had never known
But what was done to her was of monstrous tone
Her body was ripped and torn
Her hair was cut into shoddy patches
It seemed some of her organs were missing
But the action, the deed that puzzled me the most
Was how parts of her were replaced with metal for bone
This bizarre sight I did not study
For behind me I heard something ugly
And when I had turned my back
The beast was standing there
Looking at me with an angry stare
A black liquid crept from his teeth
And started to pool at his feet
Shakily I started to retreat
But the dog had leapt into the air and snapped at me
I screamed and rolled to dodge his landing
I backed to a table and graped for handling
It was then I heard something fall to the floor
It was a knife
Oh blessed be the Lord!
And as the dog jumped again
I quickly did grab the blade
And with a slash took his life away.
I breathed deeply and clutched the knife
I had no more reason to be here tonight
All my bravery put to an end
By whatever evil ran this den
I took one last look at the poor girl
And slowly did I unfurl
The silver bracelet that I found
And on her wrist it was bound
Then I turned to exit the grounds
But I got no chance
For I felt
A crack on my head
And was knocked out
I awoke in the mind and thought
To move my body I could not
And the aching splitting in my head
Was the only thing to tell me I wasn?t dead
It was on these pretenses upon which
I tried to remember how I came to this
And then it happened, a flash of silver
It them came back as if in pictures
A dark night
The scream so high
A silver ring
The smoke curling
A beast laying
The experiments maimed
A battle fought
Then all was naught
For a moment I thought I lay outside
But then did I realize
That it wasn?t wind on my ears I felt
But rather the spoken word of some unseen devil
?Awaken?
he crooned
?Open your eyes, come back to us, let your dreams lie?
and slowly, steadily, surely did I open my eyes
to reveal the surprise of three figures disguised by my blurry eye
and as they came to focus did I also begin to hope this was but a bizarre nightmare
for I couldn?t believe the faces standing there
they stood there each was deaf, dumb, or blind
the one on the left had his eyes scooped out
his skin was covered with boils and gouged
his a matted hair red, and a voice that would chill the dead.
the man who stood at the base held a monstrous face
his condition all seemed well except his mouth, tightly weld by some fire or device
they held in contrast with his pale blue eyes
his hair was blond and crudely cut his body burned and seemed full of rage it was then that I moved to the next face.
the one on the right had a face with two clean sides
he was deaf and was scrawny, a skeleton with a hide
and looking at these features I couldn?t help but think?
?what was to become of me?
My head spun around when the first one opened his mouth
?what a curious being you are to make it this far
to fight for a girl who you know not at all
of course you killed the dog that was his pet?
and he pointed to the man at his left
then he pointed the finger at me
?but what should we do with ye??
reader if all above is too frightening
then here, let me enlighten
what should follow are horrors unheard
so close this now if you wish it to end
it was through time and darkness that I was enslaved they hurried to drug me then put me in chains and while this all did attain
they explained their aims
it was by their methods they sought to end humanity?s pain
they thought that metal was a means to avenge
all the defects that were entrenched in men
and it was by the alchemy of steam, metal, and science they proposed
to change the properties of flesh, blood and bone
such is how they are deformed backlash of their own performs and when I lay enchained slowly did my ears obtain that clacking of the ground of stone as the room slowly growed
the presence of more than the three was more than obvious to me but how many there were I couldn?t tell and was thankful for the blindfold that my face held
and by my imagination I increased the tension
the chamber filled with the eerie echoes of the members
and then a blinding pain that still hurts to mention
with the heat howling as my face felt the embers
the pain was enourmous as the fires glowed
the metal was cold my screams were high but no one replied
I felt some of my bones cracy
As the stell replaced the parts they thought I lacked
My leg, my arm, my chest, eye and throat were all replaced with metal and chrome
The process seemed endless as time dwindled by
After forever it ended, or had I died?
When I opened my eyes the moonlight shone
Revealing the twisted fusion of flesh, metal and bone
I looked out and saw in silver light the cultists all filled with excite
I opened my mouth and let out a roar
With the vibrations shaking the ground floor
And the qualities of my voice bore
The groan of metal and shriek of bone
And the cultists all stared then fell to the ground
And gave worship in a soften sound
I looked across at the three
And they beamed back at me
I again let out another roar
For I knew I was their God, forevermore
So if you ever see the smoke curling in the night
Be careful of the shadows that you pass by.
