HAY-TED that sound! UGH. But that wasn't the reason I didn't use ICQ, the main reason for me was the fact that it used numbers and not screen names! Seriously? Never saw any benefit in that system. This is the internet, we use DNS! Still, I must salute one of the grandfather brands of the internet for still being around and still having a userbase. Bravo!

It really has to be a local phenomenon.
Here in Germany, almost everyone I know still uses ICQ.
To IM someone is the most convenient way to reach my friends (no teenagers) at any given time.

But most of the people I know only use the ICQ-protocol, not the ad-ridden client.
So we use Trillian, QIP, Miranda and so on...

That way ICQ lives on right beside other contacts from Windows Live Messenger for example.

It's fitting, my friend has had his ICQ hacked several times, by Russians. I guess they were trying to steal it first.

(I'm joking ...well not about his ICQ getting hacked)
