I've commented about this once or twice, but no-one's answered. Here's my question:

Why was id Software kicked out of March Mayhem to be replaced by Zynga, or maybe one of the other 'insignificant' developers almost no-one's heard of? I'm sure about 40% of the Escapists like the Doom or Quake games, probably more. Instead, we have a browser-game maker and some random Japanese developers with a line-up of JRPGs. What gives?

It's just a silly popularity contest, not any measure of quality or influence. As you can see, that little browser-game maker has been bringing in the votes big time, and apparently that's all that matters.

Zynga makes a metric fuckton of money. You may not like them but insignificant they are not.

As for Id, unfortunately in the last twelve months Id hasn't been up to much. They're developing Rage, but not much else. In fact the last Id Software game to be released was Doom3 in 2004, Quake 4, Quake Live/Mobile, Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory were farmed out to other studios.
Until Rage comes out, Id are something of an irrelevance, so they're missing in favour of studios that have actually produced games in the last five or so years.

Who is the random JRPG developer?

They haven't released anything for a while. Once they actually release something you'll probably find them back on MM.

If he says Square Enix I'm going to cry.
And by the way, given how much more money and how many more fans Zynga has and makes than Id, I'd replace them also.

Nippon Ichi Software...

The other 'obscure and unkown' devs that I saw were Atlus, Firaxis, ThatGameCompany, Realtime Worlds, The Behemoth, and Treasure. I've never heard of any of these guys, or their games.

Its a shame...that you are so uneducated in gaming.

Atlus makes TONS of JRPGs. Firaxis makes the Civiliation games, ThatGameCompany...I got no clue. Realtime Worlds made Crackdown. And Treasure...

Treasure is godlike. Making awesome games that no one plays since the Genesis.

ThatGameCompany: Flower, flOw, Cloud
Realtime Worlds: Crackdown, All Points Bulletin (APB)
The Behemoth: Castle Crashers
Treasure: Ikaruga, Wario World, Gradius V.
