So I've been playing Red Dead Redemption, I've been watching Cowboy Bebop and I had an idea.

I'm sure plenty of people have had this idea before but I want to hear some thoughts on this.

Think of a game, Red Dead Redemption style. In space. Going to different planets catching bounties and such.

And that's all I got I haven't thought of it much past that I just wanted to share the idea with everyone. So any thoughts? Do you think this would make a good game? If not how could it be made better?

P.S Anyone like my avatar? Huh? Huh? Cool stuff, huh?

All I can think of is the Astronauts vs. Cowboys movie my philosophy teacher showed our class.

OT: I'm really sorry, but the way you put it, that sounds like a horrible game IMO, I wouldn't buy it. It sort of seems like you know the gimmicky Mario Galaxy stuff.

A lot of games have space bounty hunters. I think mass effect had a few assassination missions. just because it's not a new idea doesn't mean it can't be fun though.
In fact I'm studying game design and one of the plots I have on the backburner involves the main character (he lives in the year 2775) being forced into bounty hunting and assassination after the universally wide government collapses (his fault) in order to wipe out any overly power-hungry groups (the game will be humorous so the hypocrisy will be pointed out)

I like it. Though you mentioning Bebop would make me want to do it in a more team-based sense. Maybe recruitable NPCs with distinct personalities and AI that actually makes them useful. And when they die, they go away forever and you can't resuscitate them, so that'd make you actually want to be careful with them.

So how do you think it could be changed then? With the planet hopping thing I think of a Mass Effect 2 deal with going on a ship to different planets. Could be a cool way to have some interesting scenery instead of bland brown and grey.

But if there's only a certain amount of recruitable NPCs, then if they all die wouldn't you be screwed? So then they'd have to be infinite so you never run out of possible team members, then they wouldn't be unique.

Well the thing I liked about Red Dead Redemption was that it was a very serious and gritty game and anything less/more would have just been pretentious or fake. It fit exactly in a space like it was supposed to, and I'm sorry, but colorful planets and weird and wild strange animals kind of lose the seriousness element for me.

I'm not saying it couldn't be a successful and immersive game, I'm just saying that unless they do something really well, I probably won't buy it.

I wasn't thinking about wild animals although if there wasn't some kind of alien species it wouldn't feel like space. Even though RDR was an amazing game the scenery wasn't much to look at, it's realistic and does exactly what it should, but being on different planets would be a perfect opportunity to include cool environments without seeming out of place.

I know, I'm just talking. That's all I came here to do. It's probably not going to get made, unless some game developer said "Hey that's a good idea" and went with it.

Ehh, you make a good point. I'll agree with you and let's just leave it at that. There definetely is something to be made here, though.

Well, you could take the premise for any good game, recycle it in space and BAM, brilliant game. Nothing entirely new here.

That's actually what I had in mind. :D

Not in the gameplay sense, but more in the sense that now you've lost your big, reliable guy, and you have to make do without him. As far as the actual gameplay, maybe you could have an infinite amount of "hireling" style NPCs who can join you, but aren't up to the caliber of the main NPCs. Kind of like the difference between a PC and a minion in D&D. The issue with that woud be that you'd have to spend a ridiculous amount of time scripting for every eventuality and character death, but I'm just spitballing here, so yeah. :p

As far as the feel that I'm trying to accomplish with this, I'm thinking along the lines of George R.R. Martin's philosophy on killing characters off:

Maybe it wouldn't translate well in a game, but I think it'd be kinda cool.

Funny thing...

True as it is, how many games have space bounty hunters actually going about the business of collecting bounties? Capt. Falcon just races. Samus Aran mostly just saves the universe. Boba Fett? Not in any appreciable sense.

I've often thought that a game where you can travel in space but also visit various planets and space stations would be a huge hit. I mean, imagine where it's up to you where you go, and you have these fully explorable planets that you can land on or go to any time. You could complete missions or just run around killing people and blowing stuff up in space if you wanted to.

I'd play that, and I'd enjoy it, if it were done well.

The way you put it sounds like GTA in space. Which is awesome, a space bounty hunter opera sandbox game.

It works well in the Fire Emblem games. It would need some retooling, but that could ultimately work.

Hmm... I forgot Fire Emblem did that. I've only played the earlier ones. *Goes to find any Fire Emblem games he can get his hands on*
