Inspired by the thread about anti virus program preferences, I'd like to ask the Escapist about an ideal software set-up. Because next week I plan on formatting my little old laptop in favor of more decent performance (I can't even play old games because some douche installed Vista and is gobbling up all my 1gig of RAM. :S). So far I've read that as far as virus scanners go, AVG is probably the best (and cheapest) option.

Apart from that this is what I have so far:
OS: Windows XP Corporate Edition
Browser: Firefox
IM: Trillian (way more indie than Messenger, thus better)
Virus scanner: AVG Virus scanner and Linkscanner

And of course Excell, Word and Powerpoint. Maybe SPSS as well because I can do research whenever I damn well please. :D which is always fun.

... so, yeah that's about it. Did I miss anything? Maybe you think Firefox sucks and I should switch to Chrome (or Iron, which is the same thing except with all the Google stuff removed)? Is Google Earth an absolute necessity? I'd really dig a computer performance interface as well, but I don't want to sacrifice performance itself (like that stupid fucking gadget from Vista does).

Gimme your best shot tech geeks! :) Thanks in advance.
