What is the ideal thread length in which to post? Twenty pages and the thread may have become irrelevent to the original post and your comment is easily swallowed up. Too short and.... its uninteresting? I suppose what is the maximum thread length where your comment is worthwhile and where you can expect a good reply?

It depends on the thread I mean thread in which the person is asking for help should only be around 3 pages at most, while a thread in which the person is looking for an idea or an opinion depends on how long the original creator is willing to read.

I always tend to not post off the front page unless the thread is particuarly interesting.

But I'm attention seeking, so there we go.

I am more quick to go into a thread under 10 posts, as too many and I may not need post. Ofcourse, interesting topics will outrank posts, but I prefer getting in on the ground floor, since I dont usually read more than the first page posts and any responses to my own.

Probably true of alot of people if they're honest. I find it amusing that many forums often turn into a 'who shouts the loudest' competition what with post counts and badges for thread views etc etc.

Yea I wont post on a thread over five pages because most of what needs to be said has prob already been said and in any case, to find out you would have to read through the whole damn thing anyway.

Generally I ignore threads that already have around 100 or more posts, depending on the subject. Any post with less than 20 posts will immediately attract me, so I'll at least see what is being said. If the subject is particularly interesting I may stay for longer, but unless someone quotes me with something that dignifies a response, I'll usually ignore that thred from then on.

I think that about covers it.
The sad truth is I very often get far too carried away, the fact that I have become a good typist over the years doesn't really help. I often find my fingers out pacing my train of thought.

I like that. That sounds like it could work. Does it?

That is the perfect simile.

yeah it works pretty good it keeps the threads from becoming freakishly long but keeps them alive so you can still discuss the topic

Wouldn't it be nice to 'clean up' a thread?

After a certain time the author could include the useful comments in the first post, quote accordingly, toss the rest, back to page 1.
