I personally believe WW2 is not a dead/dying genre. However certain points are definitely over used e.g. Normandy. But there are so many battles and events that haven't been touched on.

My game would be a survival fps with pseudo rpg elements (inventory/equipment but no leveling or skills, much in the way of STALKER), about a party of four ordinary German soldiers in the retreat from Moscow. As they are fighting Russians, the Germans can speak (accented) English for the sake of the players.

They would be a squad of the usual stereotypes a cynical (and older) WW1 vetran, a fresh faced boy straight out of hitler youth, maybe a communist sympathizer and yourself, who is a blank slate.

You'd have varying degrees of squad control (including inventory control) to choose from. You wouldn't have to stick with the characters, but they would provide safety in numbers and other advantages (like a watch system while you sleep), but then again they require more food, ammo and draw more attention.

The goal would be to get back to the safety of your own lines by whatever means necessary. You have avoid/fight through Russian soldiers and perhaps in rare encounters German military police that want to hang you for cowardice. Food, water, sleep and protection from winter exposure would all be important things. Food could be found, stolen or scavenged. Food and water also take up weight.

Weapons would be the range available at the time, mainly bolt action rifles, machine pistols and pistols. Guns and ammunition would take up weight, leaving you to decide do whether to take a rifle or mp40 or both and sacrifice the amount of ammo/food and other stuff you can carry. Weapons would be useful in their different ways, rifles more reliable and able to pick off enemies, machine pistols good for close quarters ambush and pistols concealable.

What you wear would also be important, probably reduced to headgear, uniform, boots and great coat. For example your German helmet offers good protection, but identifies you as a German from afar, whereas the Russian fur hat is warmer and makes you look like a Russian. Who you appear like is important as enemy soldiers and your own scattered allies will fire on those that appear as enemies. Dressing as civilians would have its benefits and restrictions too.

The moral choices would be a lot more grayer/grittier, for example you see a house with Russian civilians in it. You could...

A. Avoid it, but this means you can't get any supplies

B. Threaten them for supplies, but then they'll tell the Russian soldier who will sweep the area.

C. Kill them all, aside from moral ramifications this takes ammunition and risks drawing a lot attention to your position. But if done quietly nets the supplies and no search.

D. Sneak in and steal the stuff, this risks B and C if caught

E. Pretend to be Russian soldiers (if you have the uniforms) and take or barter for it (you'd be able to speak Russian)

With randomly generated content, each time could be different.

What do you think? Whats your idea for a game?

Some sort of Zerg infestation would spice up a WW2 game quite nicely...

Just an expanded version of Nazi Zombies...Treyarch did a better job with that mini game than the entirety of the rest of WaW.

Playing from the point of view from German or Japanese soldiers.

I mean, really - why haven't we had these yet?

Marketing. That's the reason.

It's much easier to market a game where you get to be American or British or whatever. But to have it only from the perspective of The "axis" countries, would make the game a whole lot harder to sell.

Personally, I would love it. But I love all sorts of things that nobody else seems to.

If there were Nazi zombies they'd be easy to kill. Tell them France is that way and point off a cliff or something. It'd get boring after about five minutes.

I agree, that would be an interesting way to do things. However, marketing it would be difficult because there's bound to be some bloody opposition to being the 'bad guys'. Perhaps if it were to take a little out of George Orwell's book '1984'. If there is difficulty in the amount of opposition, offer it as an alternative universe.
This would also assist in the obvious story-line issue of the German's losing. It's not likely this will be attempted by anyone but its an interesting topic.

My WWII New Game:

A dark night in a costal bunker. German soldiers.

Three men sit in a circle: You, a man revealed to be your childhood friend, and a man revealed to be one of your childhood bullies. You are the equivalent rank of corporal, and they are privates. Then, the bully sees something in the sky.

Dubbed English:
B(ully): "Sir? Those things- you couldn't miss them, even with your bad eyesight. Are they ours?"
F(riend): "No airdrops schedualed for tonight..."
B:"Die Americana. The Americans."

You fight through D-Day on the side of the Germans, in short.

Oh nice idea. I didn't think of an RTS. I think that would be the way to go. Or try a combined RTS and FPS like 'Savage'. One person being the overall leader, the others being troops of varying skills. If managed correctly it would make for some awesome online play.

Somehow a Canadian WW2 game has failed to be mentioned. As a Canadian I find that dissappointing. We played a big part in WW2 and havent gotten much gaming coverage. Somehow the Passchendale movie didnt even get a game port, haha.

Yeah. Many of the Commonwealth countries don't get much of a look in. It's all Britain, France and bloody Americans 'saving the day'. I wouldn't mind seeing some of the Australian and Canadian battles as well. Especially something like a simulation of the battle at the 'Kokoda Trail'.

A World War II that isn't the same as the one that happened. It would take a lot of time designing a new war, but they could make it perfectly suited for a video game.

How is this? You play as a widow crying...
Or how about this battle that hasn't been done? KRISKA it was the only battle in the pacific where the Japanease won, of coarse though, you play as the one of the american soldiers and you have to fight off all the other americans because they are trying to kill you (Man the Americans had MASSIVE friendly fire issues in that battle)

I am already designing a time line. The Dhali Lama is the leader of the Axis, Adolph wasn't rejected from art class, the events of Pearl Harbour never happened because after the Americans bombed Nagasake (In WW2 Nagasake was bombed twice, once regular and once nuke) Kyoto and Tokyo (Hence the anagram wars) blame each other for the attack and start a civil war. Mean while the military of the state of Hokido invade Mexico and proclaim Tiowana (Or Mexico City) the new capital of Japan.
China attempts to invade Germany (because of the Jew problem, and the chinease have a word called "jiu" (Pronounced jew) which litterally means an alcoholic drink) because they think the germans are trying to destroy the world's supply of booze. Unfortunately the indians interfere and block the chinease. Italy falls to the allies only because they "surrender" after 98% of the entire allied millitary died trying to take over Italy, and the Italians simply got bored of owning them.
