I remember watching this movie. The idea of morons overpopulating the more intelligent people did seem quite clever but i doubt will happen. There will always be a smart or at least more cunning human out there that will control the less intelligent human, like how the banks and governments control the cash flow meaning they will always have the upper hand.

Another strange thing about the movie I found was it was on a fine line between a serious warning movie and a comedy and it kept jumping between the two.

Well, that's my two cents anyway.

I highly doubt it will come to that. As long as there is at least some people with decency and brains to reproduce and raise their kids to it, there will always be intelligent people. Also, I think the stereotypical fat idiots are a minority rather than a majority.

Hey, look at this, more stupid fucking pointless elitism. God knows this site needed some more of that.
Yes, we Escapists are good at this stuff.

Did you know 85% of all elitists are actually a lot dumber then they think they are?

BEEF SUPREME!
Electrolytes: It's what plants crave...

sorry, i had to. now back on topic
I think that the intellectual capacity of the average human is on a decline, with technology doing everything for us, there's hardly a reason to make any sort of effort to do anything. While I agree things may get worse, there is no way that the exaggerated future in a comedic movie will become reality.

Take away speed limits and seatbelt laws. See how many idiots are left, then.
Because car crashes only affect the bad drivers.
Eh, smart people can drive SUV's and Humvee's so they survive.

Not really.
Why not?
Yes, cause wasting gas and polluting the enviroment is a smart people trait. Not saying they cant do that, but its not really a 'smart people' thing.

If we took out the laws that protect idiots on the road, I'd want something big that would survive a wreck. With the idiots driving drunk, running lights, and crashing all the time, it would overall lower the emissions of vehicles, given the loss of the majority of drivers.

Me and my pesky, middle of the road opinions...

First off, yes, XKCD hits the nail on the head. Idiocracy is a comedy. It uses broad strokes to exaggerate concepts into parodies. There is no actual, strong device by with stupidity is selected FOR. Those that you do see are canceled out by also weak selections against stupidity. Overall, as XKCD mentions, were likely to stay just as smart as we are.

This, however, is not entirely good.

Humans live in an increasingly complex world, and the problems we are addressing require more and more intelligence. There is less and less emphasis on fact remembering, since it is easier and easier to externalize knowledge, so more and more we need to be capable of useing information we access in intelligent ways. As technology advances, the Human brain seems to be at a standstill. Sure, we aren't actually going backwards, but are we going forwards? I don't think there's pressure to do so. Wouldn't it be an imperative to try to slowly evolve into something better, as opposed to standing still?

I'm not going to be an advocate of sterilization programs, or other heavy handed eugenic programs. I don't think they are necessary, or even realistic to undertake. But I do think that as a society, we need to realize where were going, and we need to start valuing intelligence more. We need to hold a research scientist on a higher pedestal then a sports superstar or a celebrity, and intelligence in both men and women needs to be seen as attractive. That sounds like a better world, even without the natural selection part.

Now if only there were some cultural movement gaining popularity with the opportunity for social interaction and networking, that valued the participants capacity for such actions as lateral thinking, puzzle solving, and pattern recognition. You know, some sort of institution where people engage in activities that are fun and engaging, yet also favor a capacity to understand and interact with a rules system...what could that be...
