I think this should be in advice?. Anyway quick background I'm resitting a year at college and have a new biology teacher whom I have to write an essay for. The problem is only about of quarter of the essay is actually on the syllabus and I've never even heard of what he wants us to write the essay on despite having to redo the year. I also asked my sister, she said she thinks she remembers writing 3 lines on the subject of the essay in her SECOND year of biology. (I'm in my first) Should I just write the essay on the stuff that's actually relevant to my exam and year and argue my case if he brings it up, or just research it and learn pointless things?

I'd talk to your professor and ask him if you can research and write about something more relevant, rather than doing it anyway and having to plead your case later. Never hurts to check. Otherwise just write about the topic he gave you. Who knows, you may learn something interesting!

Yeah, what NinjaSniperAssassin said. Talk to the prof, mention that as far as you know a lot of what he seems to want you to write about doesn't seem to be on the syllabus, and ask if he can confirm what exactly you want to do. Even if you end up having to study a bit outside of your classroom material that shouldn't be too unreasonable; most of the books you need should be at your local library.

Sorry but university is not just about memorizing things that will be on the exam. It's about learning and you'll often find yourself having to write essays about things not directly on the syllabus so just suck it up and write the damn thing. It's not like pumping out an essay is hard.
