Ever since the onset of 3d graphics, game franchises have forgone the 2d days of their youth in favor of a more polygonal state. Some have prospered by this transformation (Zelda, Metroid), others have withered and contorted (Sonic, Sonic, and this one weird game called Sonic.).

The purpose of this thread is to ask ourselves what would happen if a 3d game franchise had exclusively 2d sequel? Like what if Assassin's creed became a platformer, or Call of Duty became an arcade game?

Sequels would stop being made ... This isn't too bad an idea actually , i think you're on to something .

Jrpgs would be a lot better ....story wise . Usually fall flat in the story department in sequels . Due to making sequels entirely in 2D , more time could be spent writing a good story .

-FPS as a genre would be gone
Duck Hunt? (Also see Gang Garrison...but that falls into a more "general" shooting category.)
-No open world games (Grand Theft Auto, Assassins Creed, Skyrim, etc.)
2D MMOs? (Maplestory, Wonderking, etc)
-No sport games (some might be OK with that but they're wrong :p)
Tecmo Bowl? (It's a stretch but still...)

Edit: Just realized how many "old" games I mentioned... still doesn't take away the fact that these games were made with 2D limitations anyway.

gaming as we know it would either be dead or remain a niche hobby at best.
Somebody didn't actually read the OP, but I picked out this bit in particular 'cause the first thing I thought when I read that line was "Of course, a bunch of people on this very website would probably prefer gaming to go back to being a niche hobby..."

OT: It depends on the franchise. Sonic and Mario technically already have done this, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_4:_Episode_I] & Episode II [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_4:_Episode_II] and New Super Mario Bros [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Super_Mario_Bros] (and off-shoots) respectively. A bunch of games have released spin-offs that were different genres for things like mobile platforms or handheld systems. How about Megaman 10 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaman_10]?

I don't think that a currently-exclusively 3D game would necessarily work well to have a direct sequel released as a 2D title. For instance, if something like Prototype or inFamous were to be changed into a 2D game, they would suffer pretty drastically because of it.

I did read the OP (though I could have mis-understood it). It sounds like he is asking if gaming stayed 2D and there were no 3D games ever released. I thought at first he was just referring to 2D games having 3D sequels but mentioned Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty (both of which have never been 2D games).

If I mis-read the OP, you can ignore my opinion for it would obviously change if he's saying X and I read Y.

You are telling me right now, with a straight face, that gaming would be able to survive with those limitations?

People would prefer a duck-hunt style game over Call of Duty (or Halo, or Half-Life, or etc)?
People would prefer Maplestory (or GTA 1) over Grand Theft Auto (or Skyrim, or World of Warcraft, or etc.)?
People would prefer Techmobowl over Madden (or FIFA, or MLB: The Show, or etc.)?

I read it as "What if [3D Game] had a 2D sequel?", not "What if 3D games had never been released?"

You are correct sir. Now that I re-read it, it does indeed state 3D with 2D sequels. I have no clue why that would occur but there you go. I will bow out of this because I don't see why that would ever happen and think it's a preposterous situation.
