If I didn't like Fallout, will I like Skyrim?

I know a lot of you guys here on the Escapist are really big RPG fans, so I figured there couldn't be a better place to ask this. I bought Fallout: New Vegas when it came out because I was looking for something sophisticated and complex to play, something I could really get immersed in. I've played RPGs before, but I guess you could say this was my first "Big boy RPG", because my previous ones consisted of Kingdom Hearts and Pokemon.

I enjoyed Fallout a decent amount at first, but it just kind of stopped for me. A lot of things turned me off. The biggest game breaker for me was all the stuff in my inventory. I didn't know what half the items did that I picked up, and my pack filled up far too quick. I quickly became frustrated with taking so much time to sell all the useless shit I picked up, and I'd really just want to get on with things.

I don't know if Skyrim follows the same kind of mechanic, but I also didn't like the story, and the whole "choose your own path and your own destiny" wasn't my thing. It all came from endless character dialogue, there were hardly any cool cutscenes to be found.

And the bugs, oh jesus. I was sad when I found out Elder Scrolls and Fallout were both made by Bethesda, after I experienced Bethesda's failure to make the game free of glitches. The game constantly froze and a few other things happened that I wouldn't expect of anything past Nintendo 64 days. Can I trust Skyrim will be better at this?

A bit of a minor issue, but some of the graphics were kind of subpar compared to other games I've played. It looked pretty blah. I know there was a huge world to make and everything, but Red Dead Redemption had a huge world as well, and that game looked pretty decent.

I've gone on for a while now so I think I'll just end here. Am I just not an RPG kind of guy, or do I just really not like Fallout? Oh yeah, I'll add that I really enjoy fantasy stuff.

P.S. I hope I don't catch any flames for this but, I will be playing this on a PS3, because my PC probably can't handle it and modding doesn't interest me.

TL;DR I didn't like Fallout:NV, is it possible I'll like Skyrim?

Fallout NV was made by Obsidian and publish by Bethesda, that's extremely important. Bethesda is making Skyrim.

Judging by what you said you probably won't like it. It's an open world where you can pretty much do what you want. There probably won't be many "Cool cutscenes" either. Try Oblivion ($6 on Steam right now, I believe) if you like it then try Skyrim, if you don't then don't bother.

Normally, I'd say yes, but your comments made me say otherwise.

I have a feeling you just don't like western RPGs. There are a bunch of more linear wRPGs, but they still all boil down to equipment (many less so though) and dialogue. Cut-scenes don't make that list.

Have to agree with the other posters on this one, you'll probably get more fun out of some of the jrpgs out there if thats the kind of experience you're going for. Bethesda is all about the open world RPGs and thus probably won't really be wha you're in to.

Ah... Probably not. Inventory will most likely have the same issue for you, the dialog should be even more endless. The (main) story is linear if the past games are any indication, but there will be tons of random other stuff to do.

Strictly speaking, New Vegas was made by Obsidian, but Fallout 3 was pretty buggy too, so we won't get into the nitpicking. We all hope Skyrim won't be buggy, what with the engine change, but who knows.

It sounds like you're going to want to wait until it comes out to make your decision. Check out the graphics and find out if it's stable enough. But if I just had to guess right now, you don't really sound like a Bethesda RPG kind of guy. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

True, but Bethesda still preformed preformed QA testing for New Vegas, which is another important thing to note.

OT: Nope. If what your looking for is a more linear, cutscene filled experience, you will not find Skyrim, or other Bethesda games, to your liking. Try some JRPG's, seems like that's what your craving.

Hmm, it's not so much the open world that bothers me, I used to play WoW so I got used to open worlds pretty quick. It's the micromanaging that got to me. Whatever the case, thanks for the input.

If you didn't like Fallout, then your opinion is wrong.

Just kidding, it's okay to dislike it. I just happened to love both Fallout 3 and NV (1 and 2 were before my time, sadly)

Um, a better gauge would be if you had tried oblivion. Because those two games will share more in common than Fallout and Skyrim.

Try Fallout 3, it's Bethesda made.

Playing on Very Hard mode is fun, but, as you'd expect: hard.

I don't know what about the item management you didn't like, are you short on patience? The system always seemed pretty intuitive to me.

Elder scrolls are a pretty dungeon crawley loot fest series, they are about as far from linear as Jack Thompson is from sane, I don't know the series history on bugs but yes Oblivion's engine (same one that Fallout NV ran on, or a slightly modified version of it) is buggier than Michigan in summer, their graphics actually tend to be a bit ahead of the times (The oblivion system was created in 06' for reference and I've seen worse games this year even) but it should be noted that it will likely be a large difference in environment that might appeal more to you. Also from what I hear, Bethesda builds a brand new game engine for every Elder Scrolls game from the ground up, which means that even past fans of the series still have a chance of not liking Skyrim.

TL;DR You probably want to avoid western RPGs, eastern ones tend more towards linearity, and cut scenes, and less of the phat lewt clogging your bags.

Back OT. yes think you'll enjoy Skyrim, play Oblivion or even better Morrowind for a more apt comparison.

By micromanaging do you mean fiddling about with equipment and switching it out for better stuff every five minutes?

Probably not, it sounds like you just don't like the Bethesda style RPG. Skip it.

Personally? Love Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, so I can't wait for Skyrim!

I feel like Brett Favre saying this but.....I don't really know. When I think about doing stuff like that, I'm both intrigued and repulsed at the same time. Maybe all that time playing MMOs and doing all of that equipment switching has warped my mind. But, if looting is as little clicks as possible, I think I'll be ok.

Mass effect might be for you, it's got some wiggle room for exploration, loot gathering requires no input most of the time they just drop it right in your inventory when they die, with the occasional chest type thing that lets you auto loot.

Every time someone calls Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas "Fallout" a little part of me dies.

Anyway, as for the inventory thing, expect more of the same, though perhaps slightly simpler in terms of the sheer variety of loot. That's just how these games are. Same with the bugs, something of this scale never releases without a lot of bugs... they simply can't catch them all without delaying the game's release for unreasonably long. I'd expect Skyrim to be less buggy than NV, but there will be plenty of bugs.

As for the "choose your destiny" thing, Bethesda isn't very good at that in my opinion. I would expect Skyrim to be very open-ended in that you choose where to go and when you start quests, but to have few if any big decisions in terms of how you progress in the game. Quests in the last two Elder Scrolls were usually quite linear, so it's more a choice of when you do things than how you do them. Also, the various storylines in Oblivion and to a lesser extent Fallout 3 were very compartmentalized, and mutually exclusive choices of any significance were all but unheard off in the former, and fairly simple and straightforward in the latter.

As for your like of fantasy settings, the Elder Scrolls games have quite a richly detailed and immersive one, so you'll probably like that.

I have no idea if you'll like Skyrim. I certainly wouldn't recommend buying it right away when it comes out (to anyone, really). But I'm guessing you'd like it more than New Vegas.

EDIT:

If you like action/shooter games this is something to look into. The first game has a frustrating inventory system, but it really comes down to selling less useful items now and then and equipping good ones, and doesn't require much more input than that and is fairly straightforward, so you don't have to put up with it nearly as often as in New Vegas. If you don't like Mass Effect, you may still like Mass Effect 2 since they streamlined the RPG elements and the inventory system is basically just buying upgrades and the occasional piece of armor, and being asked "which guns do you want take on this mission?"

Give them a look.

How about you play Fallout 3, the better Fallout game? Or you could just play oblivion, which is actually part of the series you are asking about. That would make more sense. Also disregard my personal opinions and everyone else's on here before playing these two games so you can build your own opinions on these wonderful rpg vijemagames.

Fallout is a post apocalyptic scenario. Where as Skyrim is a high fantasy medieval adventure game. I've never really played the Fallout series. They may have similarities like so many games can have to another. It's all a matter of your own view. Play oblivion like others have said. You'll get a feel for what Skyrim is going to be like. And I just mean a feel. The game will be much more polished than Oblivion, I pray for it to be so.
