So I got into a debate with a friend recently over the roster in Smash 4 - and it came down to the classic "Well, I bet you couldn't do any better!". Since I'm bored and have some free time - yes, I think I could do a better roster than currently in Smash 4.

So I'll be doing the list first, then some reasoning for what I feel are some more controversial choices later. Also, I'm going based off of what the current roster for Smash 4 as of Feburary 2016, when the roster will be complete.

Explanation

Wait, how did you decide some of these? What constitutes a "Nintendo" universe?

My general rules went something like - Get rid of clones as much as possible (Bye Dr. Mario, Lucina, Lucas, Toon Link), get rid of largely unpopular or pointless additions (Duck Hunt Dog, Mii Fighter, Bowser Jr., Wii Fit Trainer etc.). A few hard cuts were made, as though that character was popular, there was potential to replace them either with a more popular character or a character with far more personality/gameplay available to them (R.O.B).

I was also trying to make the game not be quite such a bro-fest.

A "Nintendo" Universe is one defined by Nintendo either outright being the only ones to publish that game series (IE: Boktai, Fire Emblem) or Nintendo being the one to host the notable majority of that game series (IE: Monster Hunter).

YOU WOULD CUT IKE?! YOU'RE A MONSTER.

It was a tough call on that one - especially since Ike IS popular. However, EVERYONE from the FE series used swords AND was a Lord-class rep. This did a fairly big disservice to the series. I replaced Ike, Lucina and Roy with new characters who AREN'T primarily Lords, and who better represented the weapon diversity in-game. So now we have Camilla (Axes/Mounted), Titana (Polearms) and Virion (Archer) in addition to Marth (Swords) and the Tactician (Magic).

Well, what about those clones?

Honestly, a couple of them could come back as Alt. Skins for characters - namely Pit - Dark Pit, Mario - Dr. Mario, Fox - Falco, Marth - Lucina. But I'm pretty against having direct clones, much less so many of them or characters that play so close to each other.

In addition, I'd make the Pokemon Trainer have Alt. Skins, so he/she could be any of the Male/Female Trainers from the different regions. If you wanted to be May/Silver etc. you could be.

How did you decide on some of these newcomers?

Django - From Boktai, and excellent if overlooked game series for the GBA.

Megaman Zero - I was tempted to go with Classic Zero, but MMZ Zero has a TON of variation in weapons and gameplay comparatively.

Simon Belmont - DURR. Are you kidding?!

Lightning Farron - Believe it or not, Lightning is EXTREMELY popular, especially in Japan. Almost Cloud-level.

Chun-li - Honestly could've gone with Ryu....but we have so many people who punch already. Need someone who kicks too.

Ryu Hayabusa - Funnily enough, Dead or Alive HAS appeared on Nintendo consoles before, as has Ninja Gaiden. The Nintendo versions actually spawned a character that made it to the main series too.

Alright. I'm ready.

Overall a good list. No clones which is good. (dr. mario? seriously?) It did make me realise that most of nintendo's charactars have been introduced to me by way of smash. I do have some bones to pick:

From a FE perspective Ike is indeed another character with a sword rather than something a bit different but from a smash perspective Ike felt quite unique. He was a really heavy hitter that didn't feel overly cumbersome like ganondorf and his smash, though as slow and useless against good players as the falcon punch still feels way cooler than the falcon punch or many other hard hitting attacks.

I do also miss falco. It feels wrong to not have him there. He felt like the heavier more projectile based alternative to fox. Not as fast but far more annoying which I deviously like. Though I suppose Krystal might make a good replacement.

And villager. I mean one of his moves it planting a tree. You gotta respect that. I can do without wii fit trainer, since the series she was from wasn't very interesting, nor was her moveset but villager felt like a good unique addition.

Ice climbers are also absent which is a shame. The idea of a character that is two characters is really cool. (no infinite chaingrabs this time, though)

I also think skull kid should be in the game. That creepy bastard was one of nintendo's finest charactars so far. He could have a theme level allong with him with the majorra moon in the background staring at you. He should float around, turn people into dekuscrubs and have a moveset based on the mayhem he caused in majorra's mask.

I think we should cut sonic, since that is the biggest loser in gaming, and lucario, since he is just the lame version of mewtwo, and merge samus with zero suit samus and zelda with sheik to replace those with Ike, ice climbers, villager and skull kid.

I was thinking Titana would be the slower FE character to replace Ike, because if memory serves she was a General-class character as well.

The thing with Sheik and ZSS is that their movesets and playstyle are so different from their default counterparts that having 2-in-1 is a balance nightmare.

I might be willing to bump it up to 45 characters, to have Ice Climbers, Villager and maybe one more, but going beyond that seems kind of insane.

*pushes up glasses*

Titania is from the radiant series, not Sacred Stones, and she's a Paladin, not a general. In fact, her stats lean towards speed, skill, and luck, not strength. However, she is indeed slower than Ike. She also has less strength. She honestly has less everything, because Ike has better or nearly equal stats to every other character in the game. Because Ike is a manly murderous mercenary who fucks sassy mages and furries leaving him with no more fucks to give to anyone else.

Well, that is what Lord-class characters do; fuck things and murder people. Being a Lord-class character, of course he going to have higher stats than anyone who isn't a Tactician.

I think you may misunderstand. Ike has a higher projected stat total than Hector in Path of Radiance. Hector. In half the game's difficulties he can easily solo the whole game, and there are two missions where he is at half stats the whole time. The two missions directly before he's allowed to promote. Ike's not a lord, he's a goddamned killing machine, and in the game's cannon the only genuinely remarkable thing about him is the fact that nobody can fucking beat him in a fight. Even a goddamn nigh immortal. Even a god. He's a big brutish idiot with all the personality of a tree, and that's what makes him great.

pretty good list actually
still I would include more characters from the Zelda universe, specifically:
Volga (Hyrule Warriors) cool character is cool and we need more Zelda villains
Vaati/Zant - either could make for a great addition to the Smash roster
Lana (Hyrule Warriors) she has several fighting styles in game and I think she would make for an interesting lance wilder magic caster hybrid fighter... also she's mega cute

on the Fire Emblem side I would make the list be as follows:
Marth I agree should remain on the list for being the original hero of the series
Lucina rather than being a Marth clone she should take Ike's moves instead, we saw her in Awakening being able to perform Aether and other moves that are more like Ike than Marth. Also she's insanely popular in Asian and European markets.
Corrin might actually make for a cool fighter and the game is new enough that he can still be played on a current system
same explanation applies to Robin, he's new and different

and that's as far as I would take the Fire Emblem list, keep only characters that can still be played in the new games only. Old characters are cool and all but playing GBA games isn't as easy anymore, even with the Virtual Console very few people play them.

still can't help but wonder, why did you cut Pac-Man? I like the addition of Shantae but I also think Shovel Knight and Rayman would be cool to add. As far as Lightning goes, that would be a huge addition for the Asian market but I don't see why they would drop Cloud, their fighting styles are different enough and having them both in there would attract both markets. Chun-Li, Django, Simon, and Monster Hunter I would drop though... no particular reason for it just not necessary in my opinion. If they're going to include more third party games have them be from more contemporary games that will actually attract the newer generation of gamers rather than the old school audience they already have in the pocket

Gotta have Inklings in there. Not only since Splatoon was a surprise hit, but they have a lot of potential as fighters. As of right now, they are my most wanted newcomers in Smash.

And Doctor Chrom of course.

...Can R.O.B. still be DLC, at least? I... I still want my R.O.B. in Smash, you know? Outside of Mr. Game & Watch, he's my main [shit]!

Other than that, still like Roy more than Marth (although that might be because of Roy's personality), needs more Rayman, and I already miss Pac-Man in that roster... That is all...
