If knocking on doors was made illegal, how would you alert the householder of your presence?

well if they have dogs, i would simply alert the dogs to my presence(by whistleing or something) and they will do my work for me.
if thats not an option, i may just stand in their window staring intently until they noticed me.

Does it count as knocking if I boot the door, but not hard enough to kick it in? Nah... that'd count as knocking.
What about putting on the aforementioned boots and their steel toed awesomeness, grabbing a megaphone and taping down the button before setting it on the porch, getting a clanky metal box on the porch and ultimately doing this on it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W22gpBv00gg&feature=player_detailpage#t=12s

Set their house on fire, that'll surely get their attention. I know this is called arson, but the sheer irrationality of illegalizing knocking could surely have changed the laws about setting other people's houses ablaze?

"BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!". That oughta get their attention. Incoherent, rage-filled scream works fine as well, in my experience.
I'd start mowing their lawn.
It's loud and awfully suspicious, but wouldn't cause any real damage like *some* insensitive arsonists on this thread.
