It would make being either a sadistic bastard or a saint that saves everyone in video games all the more satisfying. One of the first things I'd do though is pop in KOTOR 2 or some other Star Wars and, assuming I didn't have to play as whatever character that game starred, I'd give a scathing "The Reason You Suck" speech to the entire Jedi Order, Sith, and Republic senate, one after another.

Personally though, if we were also capable of controlling our characters Matrix style (without the whole getting killed in real life if you die thing) like they were our own bodies then I'd definitely have a LOT more fun with the sadistic bastard side, especially in a god game.

Haha I think it would be different than most people are saying. I imagine it to be more like Toy Story. The NPCs would know I'm loading up the game and one would yell, "Ok, places everyone! Another rough day ahead, check your stats; this guy's a royal dick. Maybe we're lucky and his little sister's playing today but I doubt it. Oh, and remember to stay in character!!!"
No no no! More like reboot . WARNING INCOMING GAME! and try to beat the user ... Us . Seriously , if anyone watched reboot , how many times did the user win? Like 2? I could totally see myself beating the shit out of enzo in the mortal kombat game ... Does no one remember reboot?
Reboot was one of the first things in my head when i wrote this thread but wasn't sure if any of the young'uns would remember it. Kick ass show, and my gaming console would have gone out the window if i lost as many times as the user in that did.

Funnily enough, reading a few articles on the escapist just now, this is something i've wondered what would be like if it were true;

Assuming it was always the same user . I don't think it was given the number of different types of games that were being played and the number of times he lost lol . But think about it , remeber how in the show , the user was always considered the bad guy? I would assume it would be the zame if npcs where sentinent . The would fight tooth and nail to make him lose . Even making and elite group of people to combat the user . They always took up different personas in every game , but they were always the same people .

Tell them to stop sitting around and go get x number of y their bloody selves. If they don't like it I will politely remind them that as the pc I have access to the magical quick save button and if they don't want to spend the next hour getting repeatedly killed in ever more creative ways they better start being especially nice to me.

Hmm base off my answer I don't think I should be allowed near a Sims game if they become sentient.

If it happened in Fallout New Vegas I would recruit a private army to supplement the NCR. Make all Legion members and raiders fear me. Well basically I would reshape the entire wasteland into a NCR territory with support from my PMC.

Would that make your player character the stupidest one in the world then?

Think about it, if you saw some random idiot running everywhere and smashing every object he finds while muttering something about coins, and occasionally staring off into space for several minutes/hours or spinning around in circles, you'd probably think something was very very wrong with him.

Or an unblinking, psychotic mute who, even though he has access to the latest in weapons technology, insists on running around and hitting the combine mechs with his crowbar.

If things were a video game, then I would expect that someone like me would be an NPC rather than a main character- If someone were to sweep through my life doing great things, all the more power to them. I'd be really pissed if they didn't take the time to do that sidequest to help me with my life problems, however.

I mean, really. How nice would it be for someone to drop in and fix everything for you?
Though in case this is a bethesda game, I'm duct taping my laptop to my leg. You Nerevanes and your sticky little fingers.

Also: Videogames would be banned for crimes against sentient beings, because fucking with a universe through an all powerful avatar is unethical. I would still go on omnicdal Arcanum rampages though...heh

Good idea Mr. Nothingspringstomind ,
I would finally date Miranda and Tali and Liara and have that long awaited foursome.
Then I would spend the rest of my life inside "The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" being the onetime superheroguildmasterbadass of all guilds ever and enjoy myself there...
It's not that they could do anything to me with Chamaeleon 100%, so pretty save bet.
Magic is fun, Soulstones and wine aplenty, hell before it gets boring you can buy furniture and put your magic weapons on display.

Oh my, that's alot to think about. I'm not going to attach strings to this one. I assume you mean that it's not just good programming and that these NPC's, for all intents and purposes, have life. They have thoughts and feelings, friends and family. They have unique personalities and would react to situations how a person would with their personality. If they were mortally injured they would scream and cry and beg to their God why this is happening...
It's a lot to take in. I don't think I would keep playing game; at least not the one's where I can kill humans. I'll kill anything that express (in a way that I understand) that it's feeling pain. Boy, that sounds cruel. But luckily this is not the case, I'm get to keep playing.
