If the founding fathers could see their country right now, what would they say.

Would they be proud, ashamed disillusioned, regretfull?

Post your opinion, keep it civil.

I think they'd be a little depressed at the frightened animal/would be world policeman America has become. I'm pretty sure they'd be proud of America's actions in WW2, but deeply disapointed at their nations conduct during the 60's, ESPECIALLY George Washington and Ben Franklin.

Horrified, not proud really. The founding fathers created a country that was basically a refuge for white male protestant landowners. The rights of ethnic groups, the genetic chili (chunky and thick instead of a thin and smooth soup), and other such things that we've turned into are as far removed from the sensibilities of the founding fathers as we are from their original intent. Angry probably over us acting much like their oppressors, not only in the current era but in world war two as well. And most likely sick to boot. The concept of a lawyer existed in the founder's time but they never thought that lawyers would be leaders (incidentally they still aren't but we put them in the position of leaders now).

On the plus side though, if we introduced them to modern porn and gaming they'd probably think everything more or less worked out.

If my founding fathers could see the world today they'd probably be a bit sad at state of affairs but they'd probably be happy we're still sticking it to England in sports they (the English) invented.
(yeah okay so I'm not from the States but the view still stands)

Are the founding fathers some kind of Godlike beings. It's strange how the Americans talk about them like they're the creators of everything.

But then Australia doesn't really have too much of a back story. Convicts gallor!

They'd surely be furious about the fact that the Federal government has increased its power over the 2 centuries to become some oppressive monolith. The high taxes and level of socialism we've gotten ourselves into would also make them regret their actions. Although I think they'd find the current state of affairs of Britain to be humorous.

There's a lot that the Founding Fathers did, thought, and created that was great and noble. However, I've never really seen a change from what they envisioned in the American system as necessarily bad - though the two still go hand in hand quite often. The Founding Fathers created a system that, though loosely democratic, reflected their base fear that if you were to give any real power to "the mob" then they'd screw it up and act like, well, a mob. This isn't a view I share, so I can't say I always care what the Founding Fathers would think about The American System(TM).

growing obesity, constant fighting, rise in crime. they would hate it. all the US does is run into developing nations and squash them.

I think at least one or two of them would go "Dammit. I knew you Federalists and Anti-Federalists were gonna take this party thing too far."

And then another would go "And what the hell did you do to the system of checks and balances?"

They would be depressed to find that the amount of liberty in America has actually gone in full REVERSE. They created this nation through the Constitution to be the most liberty-rich a nation can be before it starts working in reverse. Below is a timeline (...thing...) that shows what I believe to be the average liberty levels in America.

______________________________________Orwellian_______________Free
England in 1585 (settling of Roanoke Island):___--------------|------------------------------
1628: Charter of the Massachusetts Bay Colony:_-----------------|----------------------------
1636: Rhode Island Founded by Roger Williams:--------------------------|-------------------
1776: Eve of American Revolution:___________----------|------------------------------------
1781: Signing of the Articles of Confederation:__----------------------------------------|------
1787: Signing of the Constitution:____________-------------------------------------|--------
1795: 11th Amendment*:__________________------------------------------------|----------
1865/1868: 13th and 14th Amendments*______----------------------------------------|------
1920: 19th Amendment*:__________________--------------------------------------------|---
1945: End of WWII, before Cold War:__________--------------------------------------------|--
1950: McCarthy Era begins:_________________--------------------------------------|--------
1964: Civil Rights Act of 1964*:______________-------------------------------------------|----
1991: End of the Cold War:_________________----------------------------------------|------
2001: USA PATRIOT Act formed on October 26th:--------------------------|--------------------
2002: Department of Homeland Security formed:-----------------------|-----------------------
2008: What I think the level is today:__________----------------|------------------------------

Conclusion:
I think the founding fathers would be disheartened to find out that the United States of America has reverted to the same liberty levels as the religious extremist Massachusetts Bay Colony, or even England in 1585. For those non-Americans who wonder why we worship our founding fathers so, it is because they are probibly the greatest collective of men to ever walk the Earth. Wikipedia Benjamin Franklin, or Thomas Jefferson, or George Washington, and report back here with something bad (and non-petty) to say (other than TJ had slaves). I bet you can't do it!

*******For those who do not know the significance of some of the dates above, I have added an asterisk after every topic that I will expand on below.

-11th Amendment: "Clarifies judicial power over foreign nationals, and limits ability of citizens to sue states in federal courts and under federal law." - Wikipedia
-13th and 14th Amendments: Ended slavery.
-19th Amendment: Grants women the right to vote.
-Civil Rights Act of 1964: Basically mops up anything the previous anti-discrimination laws missed, such as the Jim Crow laws (basically, the JC laws state that "colored" and "whites" must have separate facilities, bathrooms, drinking fountains, train cars, etc.).

Eh? I'm sorry, Baseball and American football are American invented, not English.

Let's see. Franklin was a bit of a randy old man, and the many of the group saw him as a fool (Bill Bryson, Made in America). George Washington was a traitor for starters, and he managed to cheat quite a lot. Thomas Jefferson, now is a harder case. Of course, there is the irony that he owned slaves whilst fighting for their freedom.
