If the ps3 is not ps2 compatible why have the option of making a ps2 internal memory card?

As above Just purchased a ps3 and was looking through the options and found the one for internal memory cards now I knew that the old ps3's were ps2 compatible but not ps1 and the new ones are ps1 compatble but not ps2 which made me wonder. Given that a new ps3 cannot play a ps2 game and no ps1 games have any use for a ps2 memory card then why in the name of all things dark and unholy have they left us with the option to make a ps2 memory card?
Interested in any ideas/theorys and to get the ball rolling mine is that they hope to fix the compatibility with a software patch so they left the option in there so the patch wouldn't have to change as much

Lol good question, but maybe they plan to have PS2 games on PSN? They already have PS1 on there (PS Classics)

So that the bandwagoners who didn't buy into the PS3 at launch, know exactly what they're missing? ;)
As someone who still owns an operational battle station PS2, I'm missing nothing, regardless of backwards compatability ;>

It's just a disgusting ploy to make the uneducated among consumers think there's a feature in the system that it does not have.

Really though, they never should've removed it. Yes, there were problems. But there were websites devoted to what games worked and what ones didn't, and how. People could've looked those up with a little effort, and made purchases on that basis.

Or else, Sony could've just fixed the damn issues in the first place. Couldn't have been impossible to put that in an update.

I'm not a "bandwagoner" since I got the PS3 before it was popular, but after the feature was removed. Bad timing, maybe, but why should my $600 be worth any less to Sony? It's not like buying at launch is going to help them much more than buying at any other time.

OH MY GOD this is the main fucking problem i have with the ps3. Before i looked into it, i assumed the ps3 slim would be backwards compatable to rival the 360. So i went and busted my ass off to find Star wars BattleFront II, Kingdom Hearts, and Dark Cloud. Come to find sony didn't feel the necessity to make it so. Well screw sony they can die.

Probably because the old PS3s had it, and the people who designed the new ones decided that getting rid of it wouldn't be worth the effort.

Edit: Not all Older PS3 models are backwards, only afew shipments in certain years were backwards ... it's weird it's mostly launch and a couple years after

Ah the old ones could play Play Station 1 titles as well as PS2. basicly The 20GB and 60GB were fully compatible with PS1&2 games while the 80GB(with 4 USB's) Was full PS1 BC and partialy PS2 BC with some games have technical issues.

But I did hear that SotC was coming to the PS@Store, but that was from a gamestop employee so i can't vouch for the source.

While I really do hope that the OP is right and they give us a patch sometime, I bet this has more to do with it, unfortunately:

It's too bad as I'd really like the option to play PS2 games on my PS3, but at least I still have my old tank of a PS2 to play those games on.

Yeah, I had to send my ps3 in to get repaired after using ps1 and ps2 games, guess that was my fault for using both.

I have an original 60gb, so where can I find what games are backwards compatible fo my ps3 and won't make it unable to play ps3 games?
