Do you mean like FPS?

I hate gritty realistic fps like cod or battlefield

I love Scifi and alternate history fps like Resistance

Post apocalypse is also quite fun

Any game that gives silly weapons is also fun or if its open world like Far cry then its often enjoyed

Oh, and if we're talking about also TPSes; Vanquish.

Sure, there's not much of a story and the environments/enemies get a bit samey (I say get, they are samey), but as much as a TPS with bullet time and cover mechanics sounds like the worst thing ever, remember that ROCKET SLIDES are a thing.

Just being able to string together rocket slide into shooting into melee hit into shooting suspended in air of your own accord is satisfying, if nothing else.
Vanquish is the first game that popped into my head. To me, Vanquish is just a hardcore action game that just so happens to be a shooter. It just spits in the face of other TPSs. There's a cover system but you're playing the game wrong if you use it, the game even deducts points for every second spent in cover.

Lastly, this is one of the best gameplay videos I've ever seen:

Actually, Singularity was made by Raven Software, the creators of Hexxen/Heretic and the developers of Quake 4. And yes, Singularity is a very underrated shooter! It's gotta be my favorite FPS to use such a modern playstyle. I think it may be better than BioShock.

Anyway, this would be my recommendation...

Don't worry about it being too hard or anything. These games get six difficulty levels, the easiest of which is called "Tourist", which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Just kick realism out the top-story window and have a blast!

Shadow Warrior. Most fun I've had playing a game in years. YEARS!
If you play and enjoy Shadow Warrior you should also try Hard Rest. Both of them are made by Flying Wild hog games and are excellent shooters.

Also, Painkiller!

I'd actually say go old school. Go to GOG.com (currently having a big ass sale) and grab Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and Shadow Warrior. All really fun games that hold up surprisingly well even today (graphics aside, of course). Also, if you can manage to track it down somewhere, Hexen is also a really great one.

I'm not typically into shooters. I started with Black Mesa (the fan remake of Half Life 1) and managed to get through that on easy mode. Mind you, people have said the difficulty is higher than it was before. Since then (and playing Bioshock and Infinite) I've been dabbling more into the genre and being pleasantly surprised.

Also played Spec Ops: The Line and liked it, but is something you play more for the (really good) story than for gameplay.

The Last Of Us is pretty good (if you have a PS3), but it's not very forgiving and Joel is a stiff old man in the controls department.

Recently played Max Payne 1 and 2, and while the first game hasn't aged that well, the second holds up a bit better graphically and with a better story (even if just the reason that Max's face isn't locked into "Ultra Pug Face". Seriously, look up Max Payne 1 face. It's hilarious). They're cheesy and hammy noir kind of games, but it carries enough self awareness to make it enjoyable. Also, bullet time!

Though perhaps my favourite shooter is Far Cry 3. It's checkpoints are a bit weird and the difficulty can get pretty steep, but as someone who sucks at shooters, I sank in more than 30 hours of plot, freeing outposts, hunting, and just derping around in general. And if you like Far Cry 3 but think it needs more neon dinosaurs (a very reasonable request, don't worry) then Blood Dragon is definitely for you.

It's different but it really felt like a letdown to me. I was really looking forward to it when it come out and felt like it's use of the whole time travel concept was really....meh. It felt more like "Let's make bioshock....but with soviets".

What's even weirder is that the whole "Law of unintended consequences" for time travel felt like it was much better executed in "Darkest of Days"(despite the fact DoD had many other issues).

Another vote for Serious Sam.

It's balls to the wall ridiculous with "You're a guy with a gun. Hordes of Aliens are coming. Kill them all". It's not bad to start with but eventually you'll be facing hordes and hordes of aliens....all the time. And it's amazing.

In SS3(BF3) I think in the 2nd half the game my kill count was over 1000 per level(2000 for the final level).

Well, my recommendations are also RPGs.

If you love the Bioshock series you should check out System Shock 2. Bioshock is the spiritual successor to System Shock and I'd personally consider System Shock part of the Bioshock multiverse. It's on sale on GOG at the moment for $5.

Oh and Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, if you haven't played those do.

Doom 2

Old, but delightful. Download a source port, copy doom2.wad into the port's folder, and enjoy. But use the classic control scheme. No mouse. Arrow keys to move, control to shoot, space to interact, alt to strafe.

It's a point in gaming history everyone should play.

Edit: and wait until the Steam Summer sale. Which should start in a couple hours?

Another vote on Borderlands from me. GOTY edition of the first game is cheap as hell now and it'll give you lots of hours of fun. You probably know about the games already, but on the off chance that you don't; it's a FPS game set on a apocalyptic-esque planet. It has RPG elements as in experience, skill points and tons and tons of loot. It's a very humorous game, targeted at a younger teenage demographic, but I often chuckled while playing nontheless.

Borderlands 2 takes all that was great from the first game and makes it better, so you could just skip the first one if you want to. Might be a bit confusing with old characters returning however, and some jokes will probably go right over your head. The world is huge, the quests are plentiful and the environments are varied(which they weren't really in the first game).

Personally hack n slash/RPGs and FPS games are my favorite genres, so having them mashed up in to a perfect cake is beyond awesome. Have tried finding simular games, but there's not much like it. Also, if you're worried about your aiming just use a shotgun!

My goodness does it ever erk me when people use Indie as a genre. My my, that just encourgages more Artsy Platformers above all else, and we have many platformers as it is.

And even though it is a proper shooter, I really like the Borderlands series. The guns feel powerful and the gunplay is just as much at heart as the Dukes of Hazard-esque comedy.

I recommend them both.
Borderlands gets mentioned so often, seems worth the time as well. Thanks for the recommendation.

As to Indies: Since there is a big difference between Desktop Dungeons, Faster Than Light, Binding of Isaac and Lone Survivor and whatnot, I will keep on saying Indie as a genre because I like unusal gamestyles and rather not describe these games as "puzzle-rpg-plattformer-but-sometimes-no-plattforms-as-in-the-examples-turn-based-space-zelda-clone" ;)

i find it funny, that you said you are into "nintendo"-ish games and no one mentioned Metroid Prime... seriously, go out and buy a Wii and a copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy like... NOW. they are actually not shooters, but adventure games played from a first person perspective.
*inaveryquietvoice* i have a wii and the triology and couldnt get around it time-wise...i apologise and will do that now.

Serious Sam, played a demo of one ages ago and was just "what the hell?". Perhaps I should try that again. It is definitely crazy enough for my taste :) Painkiller gets mentioned by my brother quite often....That might be good, too.

And yes, I do hope Far Cry 3 is in the next steam sale!

The Darkness II is one of my favourite shooters of all time. I know some people didn't like the visual style but the actual gameplay, in my opinion, is damn near perfect and if you're not good at shooting you have plenty of Darkness powers to use instead.

It also has a pretty nice soundtrack and decent story.

If it's just "definitely must play" FPS I would say: The Half-Life series, Portal 1 and 2 (if you haven't and/or class it in the same genre), Bioshock 1 (System Shock is great too, but it has aged very, very badly), Fallout 3 and New Vegas and Spec Ops: The Line.

Borderlands 1 and 2 are great, and should be on the list too, but one things makes or breaks them. You need friends to play them with. Borderland with some buddies is amazing. Borderlands without buddies is just dull.

I'd also like to throw out Zeno Clash too which is awesome. It's a First Person Brawler, but you do have access to some "guns". It's got an amazingly weird story, universe and cast of characters.

The Darkness is a good one, however it is only on PS3 and 360. Far Cry 2 is amazing, although with a couple of flaws. Far Cry 3 is alright if you install a mod to remove the built-in wallhack, but I feel like Far Cry 2 is a much more rewarding game to play and a hell of a lot more immersive. Plus it has a much more interactive environment than 3 which is mostly static. That said, Blood Dragon is definitely worth a play. I would honestly recommend playing that and Far Cry 2 but you could safely skip Far Cry 3 since Blood Dragon is basically a more believable and immersive version of it, somehow.

PS. Borderlands 2 wasn't bad, but I only really had fun with it while playing with a friend. When he outleveled me with all of his characters I lost interest entirely though. It's a very shallow game that really focuses on just finding the next bit of loot. So if you're very into finding the next bit of loot with slightly higher numbers than your current stuff you'll love it, otherwise it's best left as a social experience.

Don't let the dudebro reputation get to you, but Halo is actually a really fun FPS. I can't say much for the sequels (haven't played them) but I had a blast with the first one.

I think 2 is supposed to be the general favourite (I don't think the mechanics or controls ever really advanced beyond 2).

3 is pretty much two with an (apparently) weaker campaign, but the forge mode for multiplayer.

ODST bored me to buggery, and I completed it co-op in a night.

Haven't played Reach or 4.

I always appreciated, actually, the customisability of the multiplayer. I don't know if it appeared first in Unreal Tournament or the like, but Crazy King is INTENSE.

Blood Dragon is this weird 80es neon color thingy? That has a very interesting look to it. Far Cry 3 was cheap on the Steam Summer Sale so I will give it at least a try but if it's as slightly above mediocre as some make it seem here I don't think I will last through it entirely. Blood Dragon is cheap, so I will give that a try, too.

Halo HAS a very dudebro reputation ;) and I do have to admit that that is what kept me from it mostly.

Some friends loved Borderlands but they all don't play anymore and I guess like many game which are only real fun with nice people (like LoL) that is something I would need to make my friends play it again.
