I recently wondered why they never made a new version of pokemon Yellow, (like how they made fire red and leaf green).

Except, since pokemon yellow was basically the pokemon games but more based on the tv show, the new pokemon... uh, 'electric yellow' would be even more based on it.

Meaning you'd have team rocket stalking you like they did to Ash in the series, showing up and causing trouble in the towns you just happen to be going to next. You'd have to fight the random giant robots and stuff like ash did in the show too, maybe they might even steal some of your pokemon, forcing you to battle with your other party members like they did in the show too.

Also, Misty and Brock would become your buddies and come with you.

You know, stuff like that :p

Rated T pokemon game, where the combat was either akin to:

Pokemon Conquest (Strategy RPG where one could take into account location)

Legend of Zelda

Metroid Prime (As dumb as it sounds, a metroid prime styled Pokemon game sounds like fun, imagine bioshock but no guns for attacks)

Another possible idea that sounds better:

Make a big pokemon game where you can start out in any region (Even the gamecube ones) and get any starter, then the rest of the world levels up according to what you have, the max level may be around 500.

All 649 pokemon (including forms) would be available.
Customizable outfits/age.
Pokeatholon AND Pokemon Contests AND Musicals would be available.
You can have 8 pokemon, the 2 extra are for HM slaves.
The world would be bigger, so a city may take at least 30 minutes to get to.
Trainers would constantly be swapped on pathways with others to freshen gameplay.
Gyms would be based on combat strategies, not just types. (Type based would only exist at like the beginning)
Legendaries are region based.
Flying on your pokemon at certain spots would allow you to control your flight (Much like Dive in emerald and sapphire which would also return)
DYNAMIC WEATHER, I am tired of routes having constant weather.

Whining Genwunners would be not allowed to play until they accept the fact that there are more pokemon beyond a certain generation that they hate.

Update the graphics so it only looks 1 generation old rather than 3 generations old. Seriously why I'm supposed to be amazed by 1st generation PS1 graphics for B&W2?

And the fucking HM system, fuck that.

closer to the manga
the option to choose your own protagonist. (all the old ones plus a new one)
"old" G/S/C art/esthetics style
in-game radio like G/S/C
day-night
all the regions accessible
no Nintendo event exclusives.
option to carry over all your pokemon in one go
option to choose between chip tunes and the new soundtrack

updated for old school fans while still accessible to new ones.

Remove the isometric view

Third-person combat with fixed camera

Cover-based shooting for the trainer so he/she can assist in battle with modern military weapons.

QTE's

Regenerating health

VATS aiming system

Checkpoints

Chest-high walls will litter the battlefield

Instead of throwing a pokeball, you receive a gun that launches your pokeball, this can be upgraded with mods that you collect.

/sarcasm

In all seriousness, explore all the Regions.
Update the graphics.
Let's stop making new pokemon (We have way too much as it is)
Randomize the AI's pokemon to keep things fresh (except for gym leaders and important characters, etc)

Quick save for in battle use
Multiple save files
Able to explore every region
Character custimization
You can start in any city you want in any region
Catch your starter in the wild

I think it would greatly improve the games myself.

Make Latias the most OP pokemon.
*looks at avatar*...huh. I wonder why you would sayt THAT.

OT:
Ash and May are a couple (along with the other people I ship). Although, obviously, it would be a kid-friendly relationship.
Bumped up to T/PG rating
Gets the animation style of Avatar: The Last Airbender/ Legend Of Korra
Have more international relations between regions in the show
Have more explaination behind the technology in the show
Maybe actually find the origin of Pokemon
..........
Any others, people?

The game would start with you as an adult. You live alone in the city and every day you work construction with your Machop for a meager salary to support your daughter. Your parents are long dead and you have a long lost brother who is mentioned barely, if at all.

One day, your daughter vanishes, and at the same time the country goes to war with another far away land. You are drafted, even though you object and want only to find your baby.

As you begin to succumb to your fate, you start the majority of gameplay with a squad of soldiers who each have one Pokemon that they work to train alone. Eventually, your squad dies, and you are left to fend for yourself in an unknown country with little supplies.

At the end you go to sabotage an attempt to breed a secret weapon pokemon and find out that your brother has mutated your daughter into some weird pokemon abomination for whatever reason, and you have to kill her to free her and save your homeland.

TL;DR - Fuck the stupid, repetitive, 8 gym, 6 pokeball bullshit and all the fans who eat up the same crap over and over again. I'd make a game that has a freaking plot (even if my example sucked).
Until the last bit it actually sounded like an interesting, non-cliche ¨grimdark¨ plot. And they do have games with (comparatively more) plot - the Mystery Dungeon games, the Gamecube "Stadium" games about Shadow Pokemon, etc.

And no, the best plotline Pokemon is suited for is, and always will be, a bildungsroman. The anime could´ve been one if Ash ever aged. For the show I would´ve liked if ever region had its proper protagonist and the previous ones would make occasional guest appearances, possibly older. For the games, I say a massive game that includes all regions. Every region you beat, your character ages a little, and after the end when you become Champion of a region your first Pokemon will pass away.

They should just get on with it and remake Ruby/Sapphire already. Nobody cares about Black and White 2.
I mean, the life of the game is in the online. Smogon, Pokemon Online, all the community, thats what I play pokemon for. Perhaps they should make a game which is just like pokemon online (but for the Xbox/PS3) with daily tournaments, a huge library of articles and help on metagaming, the meanings of EV's, IV's, natures etc and so on. And it would be awesome. Add in a 3d battle viewer and its the best game ever.
TheBobmus said:
EDIT: Also I'd get rid of those stupid Pokémon characteristics as well. I don't want a 'frisky' Raticate or whatever, just a plain old Raticate.
The characteristics are there to help you work out what IV's the pokemon has. They may be pointless in terms of the standard game but if you play online they become very important. Same with natures.

"Alright, lets get this board meeting underway, gentlemen. Alright, lets review. We currently have 5 generations worth of games, each with 2 to 3 versions of the same game just named a different color. We've got a massive trading card game, a manage and anime series, a boatload of movies, and countless pokemon related spin-off games.

Gentlemen, I believe we're done here. Pack your stuff and be out by the end of the day, it's time we close up shop."

:p

Edit: off the main topic, but still on the topic of pokemon...just wanted to post these comics again without having to look'em up and link'em. :p

Every time I played the older games, this is pretty much how they always opened:

As for why the rivals became all buddy-buddy with the player, it just goes along with the games becoming more kiddy-kiddy fru-fru. For god's sake you can take your pokemon to frickin' beauty contests.

Granted, I've only played Red/Blue, Gold, and Sapphire, but really I'd say that's probably enough for an accurate sampling of "original", "updated", and "new age" as far as the changes in Pokemon are concerned.

But on a sadder note, while I used to respect the pokemon games as essentially being RPGs with a MASSIVE roster, they've become just silly now. At this point, any time I discuss Pokemon, I inevitably start feeling like one of the original Gameboys as depicted here:

Annnnnnnd then, just for fun, this comic sums up everything that's wrong with the entire concept of Pokemon. :p

Hmmm, 3rd person controlled for the world and then in battle a 2d fighting games, possibly taking the most inspiration from the smash bros series, an ascetic to fit the original cartoons, the original 150 pokemon, definitely non past gen ii. On-line battles taking your team from the main game to fight others.

Fish pokemon though, i take away the boring tun based combat, all fish become like magikarp on land and giant pokemon, i would want it to be possible to pit all sizes against each other but squirtle vs onix while a valid match in the existing system in a fighting style onix would win by sheer size.

Or i could just re-release red and blue with an generation update again and get a swimming pool of money. Hmmm a new game, no guaranteed success Vs free money. As much as i think the pokemon series deserves an update, while it still rakes in the cash it's not happening.

Different starter types (really you get your pick at any start pokemon, but it would be in reason [i.e. you want a rattata, go for it; you want an eevee, why the fuck not; of course I'll give you a trubbish as a starter you lucky dog you]). Or atleast not make the next fire starter fire/fighting (its been decided, you cant outdo blaziken with speed boost, im sorry, you lose, good day sir).

all the pokemon in one region.

some new evolutions, including one for banette, one for each type still remaining for eevee (including a level up normal).

different gym leaders with some varied pokemon.

can choose where you start (and then the gyms would scale to what youre progress is).

Oh, and a new remake of R/S.

....

yeah,t hats probably about it. standard fare really. I dont mind the way pokemon is now, i understand why it is, and i still enjoy it. I dont get the argument for it should change either, just cause there ARE games that do what people are asking, they're just not pokemon, and they dont need to be.

It was a long time ago, but I already made a thread about what kind of changes I'd like to have made to the Pokemon series here:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.285082-Pokemon-needs-to-stop-being-afraid-of-innovation#11235472

Really though, out of all that the story and the combat are the things I really like to change. Pokemon got old a LONG time ago, and I'd like to be able to enjoy it again.

There would be no Pokemon that are distinctly better than other final evolutions unless they have a massive drawback as well to balance it out, Team Whatever would have an actual motive, there would be more individual NPCs (none of this 'every cyclist in the world is a clone' bullshit), I'd get rid of one of the personalities or traits categories and make the remaining one more important (e.g. exclusive moves for frisky or lax Pokemon), I'd cut out all the naive BS people say (they can say nice things without sounding like school children), once you'd beaten the Elite Four you would receive challenges from generated trainers now and again and you'd be able to fight the Elite Four and previous Champion without having to go through the whole damn thing, Team Whatever remnants would trigger a subplot after the main story has been completed, some kind of system where you can target certain Pokemon in the wild by reading their Pokedex entry and using your intuition would be implemented (e.g. if an entry says it travels by swinging around in trees, the Pokemon would be more common near forest/grass boundaries), wild Pokemon would have small variations such as longer hair in certain areas or different markings, I'd do away with f***ing Cut and Flash and all the useless moves, I'd have a flexible in-game trading system where you can trade Pokemon you have for those of NPCs, dynamic weather, you'd have a selection of cities to start in, and Gym Leaders would scale in difficulty as your Pokemon levelled up past their level range, and be rechallengable. As far as I'm concerned, all that grinding can take a long walk off a short wharf. And you'd be able to customise your character's appearance.

I'm assuming I have infinite money here?

<spoiler=First idea>Make a pokemon game titled "Pokemon" that had the most simplistic box art ever, it would just be a white box with Pokemon on the front of it in black font. This game would include every region ever, gym battle, encounter, etc. It would be tailored to fit the greater game--so encounters would have to be modified a bit, as well as story--but the game would be a bit different.
You pick what region you start in, and go through that region like any other pokemon. After you beat the final gym, you go fight in a new competition called the regional qualifiers. After you beat the regional champion, you can now go to other regions and challenge the trainers there.
Once you leave your region, the next region you go to scales off of the regionals, so if the regional champion was lvl 45-50, the first trainer you meet will be lvl 50 across the board. That region would be the same as the first region, but with the level disparity added. Wild pokemon and trainers are tougher, gyms are tougher, etc. The same thing would happen as before, you defeat the final gym and go to fight the regional championship there.
The second regional championship would be much more difficult than the first one was (lvl 70-80 range or something), and the leaders much more intelligent. After you beat this second regional championship, you can go on to the third region. Once again, everything has scaled to your current level (or supposed level, not sure how to make that work effectively and fairly) to be harder. Beat the leaders there, challenge the regional championship, and go to region #4, where everything is lvl 100 probably.

All the regions would have their respective generation specific pokemon. Quirks like weather effects and events would be introduced to all regions once you visited the region that introduced each quirk (like weather effects in generation 3).
A final Inter-regional championship would occur after defeating the last region's regional championship, and would comprise of a set of new elite trainers; 8 of them to be exact. 2 would be double battles, 1 would be a triple battle, 1 would be a rotation battle, and the rest would be single 1v1 battles, and each fight would be designed to be as hard as possible. You are allowed to heal and restore your team in between encounters, but you cannot change your team, and the types are designed so you cannot create a team to faceroll everything (like all elite 4's have been up to this point). The final encounter has you going against a trainer with legendaries that have gone through EV training, so they are as strong as possible. Once you defeat this battle, you have beaten the game and are declared the best pokemon trainer in the world of Pokemon.

It would be awesome.
<spoiler=Second idea>Pokemon MMO. I don't know how it would work, but I would make it work
