If you could become "augmented"...would you?

Not really. Assuming the tech is there, I'd rather have the equivalent of an iron man suit, so I could get all the super bonuses, but then take it off whenever I wanted.

Also, If any of my organs got borked, I'd be fine with replacing them, although they are more likely to grow stem cell organs than build mechanical ones. But yeah, I'm not going to turn down a pacemaker or hip replacement if I need one. But I wouldn't start cutting bits off myself unless those bits had stopped working anyway.

However, just before I died I would go whole hog and download myself into a motherfucking Robot Dragon, because why not.

Please. I've been dreaming up different parts for years. Dampening shocks around the tibia and fibula, pressurized piston in the wrist, lighter/USB replacing the end of the pinky. I could go on.

Bio-augments, sure. Some basic tech augments maybe. I dont want to be taken out by a nasty solar storm, or an EMP, or a battery that's no longer functionning (because if laptops & smartphones have shown us anything, is that battery life on all high tech must be crap).

So yeah... new eyes, grown in a vat, fixed of defects? Sure. Bionic eyes? Less sure.

I would do it in a second.

Primarily, I would love to invest in some kind of memory augmentation.

Synthetic neurons and a hard drive that could be built into my skull and give me perfect photographic memory. That would be seriously neat.

I would also want to upgrade my brain to allow it to process more than the current 120 bits per second.

The first thing I'd upgrade (read: rip out and replace with tech) is all the things that kill you almost immediately when they get cancer or otherwise kill you. The heart would be the first to go.

Would I augment my body? Yeah, probably, if they had something really cool or useful, not something like Jensen's arm blades or anything. His rebreather would be cool - it'd be great for scuba diving. And if I ever ended up having something amputated, I'd jump on a cybernetic replacement in an instant. However... I'd be wary of anything that augments the mind.

I'd definitely go for all the standard augmentations, but I'd be a lot more careful with the mind. Being able to directly control your own emotions like that could be a terrible, terrible thing I think. Humans are evolutionarily "designed" (horrible choice of word I know) to seek happiness, and also "designed" so that things which allow us to survive/reproduce etc give us happiness. That's basically why people do things. If you could just turn your happiness level up, there would be no point in doing anything at all, so I don't know what would happen. It screws up the whole dynamic of human behaviour.

Maybe that could be solved by completely changing the structure of the mind with even more augments, but at that point are you even the same person any more? Would you still be sentient at all? I don't know.
And this is pretty much why. I can't help but feel like it would really screw with how human beings work and function. It sounds like one of those things that you'd love to experience, but would quickly go downhill if you had to actually live with it. Perhaps that's a bit luddite-ish of me, but there you have it. I'd be against full-body augmentations, too. However practical it might be, you'd essentially be a brain on a stick. And even if you disregard how incredibly pathetic that sounds, you'd also be a lot more vulnerable - imagine if someone managed to hack your wetware, or you got caught in an EMP blast or something. Someone with a cyber arm would just be inconvenienced. Someone with a cybernetic everything would be dead in the water.

Despite the generally lousy arguments DX:HR poses against augmentations, the end level, I think, actually introduces a terrific reason to not get augmented. Augmentation offers a lot of perks, but it comes with a lot more vulnerabilities, too.

I'm another advocate of auged eyes, since mine are rubbish. I'd also like some sort of live feed recorder on a SSD as a short term memory back up.

Some sort of USB or WiFi interface would be nice too. Say you saw something cool earlier, you can find it in your short term memory back up and stream it to your mates tv or something.

An onboard calculator would be a incredibly useful too.

As for major physical augs, I'd probably get some of my bones replaced and maybe get a lung upgrade. I cycle a lot so my knees are going to wear out eventually and better lungs will keep me going for longer.

I would augment myself without a second thought, unless there was something like a Neuropozyne component involved. That would give me pause.

Basically this bionic parts sound great until you think about just how unreliable tech is. Do you really want to worry about updating the software, tracking the battery life, and the possibility of some one hacking you? The human body is actually remarkably sturdy, eat food, do some exercise and don't act like an idiot, and it will sever you well for at least over 50 years. When is the last time you had a piece of highly advance tech last even a quarter that long?

Yes,.My body is weak, inferior, absolute shit. Being sick every few weeks because of a terrible immune system and cruise control would be lovely. I'm fragile and weak and I highly doubt that'll ever change when I already don't think there's enough hours in a day. I wouldn't mind losing my humanity as it already seems like I don't have it. SO at the cost of a few morals and risks, I can be a cybernetic chimera who's over all stronger and better? Yes please.

No. The idea is rather unsettling to me. Frightening, even. As if there's a point where you start to lose your humanity and become something else. I understand that's just ignorant idiocy of my time though. If I was born in a society where augmentation was already a thing, and other people indulged in it, then I'd imagine my feelings toward it would be much more positive. But as now? No fucking way in hell.
This. It's the same with gene splicing.

I'll just... go on my merry way and possibly become a hermit in the mountains if any augmentation riots start breaking out.

By removing the drug addiction and the financial aspect you're basically removing literally all the downsides to augmentation excluding any hokey spiritual reasons. While I'd may hold off on mental augmentations until I learn more about the specifics on how they effect my thinking there is pretty much no reason to not remove my physical body.

Hell's yeah I would augment myself! The human body is absolute shit! Thanks for nothing evolution :p

Better question: if you had to choose between genetic augmentation or cybernetic augmentation, which would you go with? I like the idea of having upgrades which are "inherent" to me (i.e., now part of my actual biology). On the other hand, doing that would ensure that these mods would be passed on to any offspring I had, thus robbing them of the choice to be augmented or non-augmented. Thoughts?

I've been playing Deus Ex Human Revolution: Director's cut. Long time coming, I know, but I tried it before with the normal version and honestly, couldn't stand the thought of more terrible boss fights, which by the way, are greatly improved, though it still does suck that in a game so obsessed with choice, you have to kill them. Probably also makes a difference that I have actually gotten better at games in general since last time, especially stealth-wise.

Anyways, it's got me thinking about the possibilities of robot parts. Beyond the usual "Holy shit I want robot arms so bad".

Of course, with sarif and LIMB being a massive dick with the pricing, let's just say that augmentation in the future carries no risk of having to be on neuropawhat for the rest of your life. What then? What would you augment?

Personally, I'm intrigued by the possibility of somehow augmenting our very minds. Imagine being able to control your thoughts directly. You don't want to feel attracted to someone you really shouldn't be attracted to? You don't have to be. You feel anxious about a routine meeting? Turn the anxiety down. It could be as easy as turning add-ons off and on in firefox. It always greatly frustrated me that I cannot truly be the master of my own mind.

And of course, I'd have to get robot arms. Dur.
If the augmented parts were at least as good as normal parts in every way and superior in some ways, I would do it without hesitation. I have no special attachment to my arms, for example, other than they are the only pair I have. If I could trade them in for better arms I certainly would.

As long there is no pain then I'm up for it. As to what to augment I guess it could be my eyes however I heard eye operation is the most scariest and painful operation to have. I suppose another alternative could be enhance strength (able able to lift heavier stuff at ease) for work purposes only.

Yea i'd get myself a robot leg and replace the mess the doctors made of it D: and my eyes and if possible smarter...like being able to do math without trouble and such things
