TECHNICALLY Tengen Toppan Gurren Laggan isn't a mecha ether, since its made entirely of spiral power to, it stopped being a mecha that the super galactic form, TECHNICALLY

but then its a super robot, it can do what ever the hell it wants

but on topic, i'd roll an AC, 100% customizable mecha, color, weapons out load, special systems, general look.
i'll take a personalised mech over jacking some one elses ride
( but i would have to have a lamda driver installed, that thing owns ( see Abalest from FMP: TSR last ep ))

Why must I choose a brand of already made fiction?

I'll make a mech, that can transform into the equivalent of a space faring aircraft carrier with massive amounts of very strong guns and stocked with a comfortable living arrangement.

It would be the size of a floating city, it shall have reverse knee joints when in mech mode and massive gatling cannons for it's main armament while in this mode.

And it would rock.

So, basically, SDF-1 [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SDF-1_Macross] with funky legs and guns instead of lasers.

As for me, I would pick the Gurren-Lagann, but really, any mech with evolutionary capabilities will do. The power to adapt and grow is the greatest power of all.

I guess that's why we choose from fiction, everything has already been done...

I apologize, looking back on that quote, it was the wrong the to do. I find it so infuriating when I detail this great new idea I've had, and someone just looks at me deadpan and says, "Oh, you mean like X." It's disheartening evidence for the belief that there are a finite number of stories to tell. That said, you could do a lot worse than Macross, one of the greatest anime franchises of all time.
