If You Go Watch Warcraft, You'll Get a Free Digital Copy of World of Warcraft

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1322/1322378.jpgBlizzard is giving away a free digital copy of World of Warcraft to everyone who sees the Warcraft movie, and they're offering some cool in-game items as well.

Blizzard is looking reward folks who see the upcoming Warcraft movie in theaters, and they're doing it with gifts of WoW goodies, of course. Anyone who buys a ticket to the movie at a participating Regal Cinema will get a free digital copy of World of Warcraft. If you're a member of the Regal Crown Club, you can also enter to win two tickets to Blizzcon 2016.

There are also in-game goodies for WoW players. If you log into the game anytime between May 25 and August 1, you'll receive a pair of transmogrification items based on the movie. Horde players will get the large axe and and the staff of orc warlock Gul'dan, while Alliance players will get the ornate sword and shield seen in the movie.

The promotions vary a bit outside the US, so if you're one of our international readers, you can get all the info over at the official Warcraft movie site [http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/20120033].

On the one hand, this sucks for me since I'm Swedish and we don't have Regal Cinemas here. On the other hand, I was gonna go see it anyway, so I guess there's no point in wasting PR gimmicks on me.

Correct me if I'm wrong... most of the audience for a World Of Warcraft movie should be people who play WoW right? No? What good does a free copy do them? Also didn't WoW go FTP not long ago?

It just says "World of Warcraft". Does it include any of the expansions?
The ticket basically includes the base battlechest account. From what I read earlier they've just included up to WoD as part of the battle chest and anyone that had the pandaria expansion has been upgraded to WoD.

They're trying to get new people hooked. Get people to drag their friends/kids to the movie and lure them in with a freebie. There's always people that'll use the free account to set up a refer a friend account and fork over a couple months of subscription for mounts and such. And no they didn't go F2P, but they did set up a token system so one person can pay $20 (instead of $15) for a token and then sell it in game for gold to another person who in turn can use the token for game time.

That sounds great! Let me just get my ticket and... Oh wait there's no servers that run the original game? And what's this about paying $15 a month for a subscription?

I get your generosity Blizzard, but you seem to have not thought this through. Perhaps the original RTS trilogy would be better appreciated.

There used to be one near Ronkonkoma. Don't know if it's still there, haven't lived there for like 15 years.

*re-reads offer* WHAT DOES THIS MEAN???

But seriously, this is an interesting offer... even if I am both the target audience and not the target audience in question... Other than that, why isn't it part of the movie trailer marketing as well?

Likely because pre-order ticket sales haven't looked to good?

Just because the offer isn't to your liking doesn't mean it isn't an excellent PR move.

This promotion is funny to me because Blizzard already tried to bribe me to come back by upgrading my account to WoD for free (didn't work, I'm not made of $15 increments).
Also, is that what the female orcs look like in the movie? And people were complaining about the sexual dimorphism in the game...

Why's it phrased like players are either Alliance or Horde? What happens if you are both XD.

The people complaining that there aren't any vanilla only servers... I was there, it sucked in comparison to today's MMORPGs in general. The only good thing about back then was the community and that community doesn't exist any more. You know what you can do? Join a vanilla only guild and just freeze xp and ignore further content, which a fair amount of guilds actually used to do.

Also that marketing strat is a bit odd. Not bad, but I think if they gave everyone that went to see it a free week of gameplay as well they'd hook a lot more people back into it.

Just looked at what countries this is being offered in, and looking at that list is shocking. This promotion is happening in Serbia, and Slovenia (which I just learned existed) and obviously the states, but NOT Canada? That's some stupid shit right there.

Not that I was going to see this in theaters, or even wanted to play the game, but to exclude Canada, the neighbour of the states and a country with a population greater than a couple countries listed combined seems incredibly stupid, no matter the reason...which according to some comments might be some kind of legal issue, or due to Quebec being Quebec.

Their subs must be writhing in the gutter right now if they're willing to do something like this. Damn.
Actually, I was wondering would this be aimed at? I went with the following people

1. you've never plaid WoW,
- you don't want to see the movie - would you really go to the release in order to get the game for free?
- you want to see the movie - I doubt "seeing movie" would equal "wanting to play the game". I'm pretty sure most people who'd go to see the Warcraft movie would know what Warcraft, and by extension, World of Warcraft is. I'm pretty sure that not playing WoW was a concious decision for them. So why would they want the game?

2. You play WoW.
- you don't want to see the movie, then how would giving you what you already have[footnote]well, I guess you'd have the one month free but it's pretty minor. If you're playing WoW, I'm fairly confident you'll have all expansions already[/footnote] make you want to see it?
- if you want to see the movie - would you be THAT MUCH more incentivised to go to see it at release by, again, giving you what you already have?

Didn't really make much sense to me. Sure, you'll get some people who'd be excited by the offer. And even some percentage of them would be retained, but I don't think it's that big of a percentage overall.

However, then I realised I was missing one group of people

3. You've played WoW in the past but not now.

I think the offer might be aimed at them. This group seems to be the most likely to both benefit from this offer and also would have the most retention, as well.

All in all, if this were true, I think Blizzard would mainly trying to reclaim lost subscribers.
So, yes, I have. OK, sure the difference is that it was a rumour before - not any more, but I still haven't changed my opinion.

I'd be tempted just for the chance to win the blizzcon tickets: I'd really enjoy rubbing those in the faces of two of my friends for a bit before I gave them to them.

Otherwise, though, I thought base wow was free to play anyways (up to like level 20 or something), so what exactly is free besides a couple of items?

Two things:

First, Paula Patton in that makeup looks bangin'! Granted, I already think she's a good lookin' lady, but still.

Second, what does this mean? Clarification would help. Is it just WoW? Good luck with that. Or is it everything up recently? If so, I could check it out I guess.
