thats not really what i was going for, but why wouldn't everyone just use keyboard and mouse then? its obviously not that hard to just have a port for them to hook up, so why not?? why not use keyboard and mouse at every single tournament gaming wise?
I'm pretty sure every player at a competitive tourney would use M&KB in a PC FPS. If you're not competitive, then it's not such an issue. Some people find controllers more comfortable, and will happily forgo the edge afforded by a mouse. Controllers obviously are a better fit for certain genres (think DMC), and on a console, there may not be a viable option. All I'm saying is that, for aiming at targets on a pseudo-3D plain, a mouse is simply superior. Doesn't mean you have to use one, though.
thats what i was going for, its "faster", due to it being a spasm movement in your arm, and i dont see too many pc tourny's around, so i dont know where you are but all the competitive ones i see are usually by console, depending on what game it is at the time

I like that list apart from Super Mario Galaxy. I really liked Galaxy but it was no where near the top 5 of the decade, maybe in top 20 or 30 for me.

Id like to see God of War, Rock Band, San Andreas, Portal and Gears of War.

REMEMBER ITS AN OPINION GUYS

I don't much like Counter-Strike anymore. I started playing it back in 2000, stopped when 1.6 came out.

It's not the best FPS ever, but it's noteworthy. CS pretty much pioneered the so-called-realistic shooter. Back then we had one overly tactical and clunky Rainbow Six, and super fastpaced bazookagavanzas, like Quake Arena.

It's without a doubt one of the most influental FPS titles ever. I'm not screaming "insolence" and demanding that you love it. Just saying that whether you like it or not, it was one of the top games of 2000(1999), and popularized a whole new subgenre of FPS games.

They meant San Andreas, right? GTA 3 is shit compared to San Andreas.
I'm guessing it's because GTA III was a greater step forward from GTA II than Vice City and San Andreas were from GTA III. It made the 3D sandbox thingamajig. San Andreas added features and stuff, but the great big smack of a change came from GTA III going 3D. Just look at what 3D did to Worms. It was a risky business back then and GTA pulled it off.

Uncharted 2 should be higher, as well as Fallout. I never played Half Life. Shadow of the Colossus was good, but I think it should be somewhere around #5. Can't really comment on the others. Oh yeah, Galaxy was good, but not top 10 good.

I guess it's difficult to please everyone.

The one thing I guess makes me feel Half-Life 2 deserves it most is that once someone's beaten the game, you can show them a screenshot of any single room, from any single level, and they'll say "Oh yeah! I remember that part! That's when _________"
(you fight the helicopter)
(you get to try out the airboat)
(you had to solve a wood-breaking puzzle)
(you were killing cops by destroying the dock supports)
etc
That's sort of why they kept the weapon selection basic, because the focus was often on individual level design aspects and ever-changing gameplay. The actual "balls-out gunslinging shootout" parts of the game that I can recall were kind of far apart.

Another thing that stood out was the level of exposition. In many games, especially FPS's, they don't really have the budget or consideration to put in a 20-minute gameplay segment letting you just integrate slowly with the world. There may be a somewhat long opening cutscene, but it usually opens with you pretty much in-the-action. Half-Life 2 had you come into a trainstation, get "processed" through Civil Protection customs, meet a friendly face who explains a little, explore the city plaza, examine an apartment block, get chased by CP, meet several new characters, then receive the game's first overall goal (get out of the city) before you EVEN GET YOUR FIRST WEAPON. And to keep a player interested through all that takes quite a lot of good writing, a visually strong art style, and some damn good facial animation and voice acting. Every time I play a game after HL2, I think "Wait, I'm being expected to shoot people already? I don't even know what this place is or where I am. Are these enemies even evil? I could just be shooting innocent police officers with wives and kids!" If you played the opening to 2008 Prince of Persia you may get what I'm saying...

I obviously can't just ask everyone here to suddenly like the game. I have to admit certain parts of it may not have aged quite as well, but hopefully at least comparing it to other games in certain regards you can see some major differences.

By "decade" I was referring to StarCraft, which came out in '99.
Ah. In that case my bad. Still an amazing game though, but unfortunately outside the scope of the thread

Notably missing is World of Warcraft. Someone fucked up; it's the most successful, most widely-played, most lucrative online game *of all time.* Think about this: it came out maybe six years ago, and STILL over 12 million people actively play it. I dare you to find me a higher credential. Everyone was apparently busy blowing Gordon Freeman in 2004, though, so he beat WoW.
FANBOY!!!!!!!!!!

Just becuase it makes a lot of moeny doesn't make it good.
You haven't read my other post explaining more about my feelings about this. I feel WoW deserves a place on the list because of its ubiquity, its staying power, and its propensity to grow indefinitely without alienating both its target audience AND its extraneous audience. The game is *still* popular after all these years. This speaks to both its replay value, and its universality. You are correct; just because it makes a lot of money [sic] doesn't make it good. But the fact that it's more recognized, and played, than basically anything that came out in 2004 (or really, in the last 5 years) definitely shows that it's doing something correctly.

I must have missed something here.

KOTOR is overrated.
Okami is overrated.
Grand Theft Auto was innovative, but ultimately overrated.

Where is WoW?
Where is Halo: Combat Evolved?
Where is Call of Duty 4?

These are 3 of the most influential games of the decade, and they get shunned. I know I know, opinion is opinion, yada yada.
Aren't they to overrated? Like REALLY overrated? Like REALLY REALLY REALLY overrated. Kotor was actually very interesting and what the hell is okami?
Well, opinion is opinion and all that, but no I don't think they are. They became so popular for a reason: they're really damn good. The games I mentioned as overrated are good, but I don't think "Game of the Decade" material when I hear Okami or KOTOR.
True True... I'm not saying that Call of duty, halo, or wow is should not be up on the list (beacuse they really should with how many people play them) I'm just saying that it was funny that the 3 games you picked were some of the most overrated games in hype vs quality those games were good but not THAT good. WOW advertising on every website I'm on, remember the launch for halo 3, (the first one was actually kind of underrated....hmm) and call of duty 4 vs halo 3.

10. Uncharted 2 (2009)
9. Battlefield 1942 (2002)
8. Okami (2006)
7. Fallout 3 (2008)
6. Counterstrike (2000)
5. Super Mario Galaxy (2007)
4. GTA III (2001)
3. Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic (2003)
2. Shadow of the Colossus (2005)
1. Half-Life 2 (2004)
10. I haven't played Uncharted 2, and I doubt it deserves that spot. From what I can tell it's the Avatar of gaming: visual spectacle but no real substance.
9. Battlefield 2 was better.
8. I'm probably the only person who thinks this, but Okami was SO meh. Great graphics and art style, sure, but the gameplay for me was nothing special. Perhaps I haven't given it enough of a try.
7. Didn't like it very much. But then again I hate western RPG's so it might just be me.
6. Yeah, fuck that.
5. Galaxy is awesome. It was the great sequel to Mario 64 that Sunshine wasn't.
4. I personally don't give a shit about GTA games, or any sandbox games for that matter.
3. Never played KoTOR, but I'm sure it's deserving of that spot due to the near universal praise for it.
2. Shadow is a great game and deserves a spot on this list for sure.
1. Good game? Yes. Game of the decade? Hell no.

Overall I'm quite disappointed with this list. Where was Bioshock? Where was Portal? Where was WoW? (not that I've played it, but its effect cannot be ignored.) I was happy to see that no Halos or Call of Dutys made the cut though.

But Counterstrike? Really?
10. they only used their best rated game from every year, so this is the worst year then. Batman instead maybe though?
9. Different year though
8. I can see your point, reasonable opinion.
7. I think it's overrated, but name me a better 08 game
6. Coming back to that
5. Agree
4. The game design and impact of the game is undeniable. Gaming's first 3D visit to Liberty is fantastic.
3. I've played it, and it does deserve this spot.

the last two, I'm gonna leave, as it's already been argued to death on here.

Counterstrike:
http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

See the bottom.

10 years on, the original CS is the 3rd most played game on Steam, with the Source Iteration being the 2nd most, not far behind MW2 and cumulatively beating it, not to mention that number 12 is also a CS game.

It't the Starcraft of FPS's, and you wouldn't hesitate to put Starcraft in a top 10 games of the previous decade list, now would you?

CS is undeniably one of the best games of the decade, and is still one of the most played of to this day.
Fair point, I personally don't think it's a quality game but its impact is undeniable.

Also I didn't give much mind to the one per year thing - for instance, Bioshock wasn't on the list because Galaxy came out in the same year.

Um, ya, they started using regenerating health in their games but Halo came up with the idea from what I can remember.
Does the idea of regeneration health really appeal to people? To me, all it does is dumb down games. When you know you can take so many shots before death and then hide in a corner until you're healed, you don't have the same caution you'd have if you could only take a few shots before death because you were reckless earlier. Regenerating health is a cancer in games because it takes any amount of strategy and do it up the bum. Why skillfully try to get a good vantage point and silently take down enemies when you can run up to them guns a blazing, and when you're almost dead just hide for a second until you're all better at 100% again

Video games may not be the most realistic things, but come one, do we REALLY need regenerating health? It's one thing to add shields like the original Halo did and keep the health, but since then, at least half the games have regenerating health, and while good games still end up using it, it's one of the features that make games easier. I'm replying just after playing Dante's Inferno, and just like the kid it copies from class, it uses a health bar. Just playing on normal, I've died a few times just because my health was low going into a fight, and I had to be more taticful with my moves than I would've been with regenerating health...so thanks Halo, thanks for making games even more dumbed down
