Some games do just fail in all senses but a lot of games people put down don't deserve it. Nothing can please some people and it is ridiculous. Back in the day, when most of use were kids the great games didn't have story lines (Pac Man, Asteroid, Space Invaders, Tetris) and even as time went on story lines didn't get much better (Mario-Save the princess...save the princess...this fucking princess needs better security).

People should really stop bitching about the little things in games and letting those things get to them because games like Red Faction are pretty damn good. Out of most of the games I bought last year I didn't regret that one.

To me it's a mixture of both. A forgiveness for most flaws, and a willingness to give something a try.

A willingness to try something new is certainly a good thing that'll help uncover hidden gems - though of course it has its limits, I'm not going to try out Barbie Horse Adventure on the impossibly minuscule chance I might enjoy it - but there's really no right or wrong when it comes to the actual appreciation of what one tries out.

And why is it "painful" for you to see others launch complaints - not all unwarranted ones - against games you appreciate? Wouldn't an open mind entail living with such plurality of opinions without being bothered by it?

Yeah, we all have our limits, though my limits are probably much lower than some other people's.

It has been good for me, because i have discovered a lot of hidden gems, because of my willingness to go out of my comfort zone to try something new, rather than some people who just play it safe and just stick to say, one or two genre's.

You might say that you're open minded, others might say that you have low standards.

Lets just say that it's nice that you like everything because you appreciate that all games take a lot of work to create, but if everyone was like you developers would never have a reason to try and make games BETTER if people already thought they were good enough.

Criticism is what drives good things to be better and acceptance is what drives the status quo.

Generally speaking I agree, however in the more specific example of the games industry the status quo at the moment is relentless dumbing down and homogenisation across platforms... this is driven by profit which is driven by majority preferences. Criticism and acceptance have little to do with it.

I can't honestly say I am. I'm trying to be, but I have some biases that exclude me from a lot of games.
-I don't generally like FPS games (but Team Fortress 2 did win me over. However, I recently tried Bad company 2 and hated it).

-I don't like/can't handle horror games. I have a broad definition of horror, too. I gave up on BioShock less than 2 hours in. Too much anxiety for me.

-Hadn't played a single JRPG until November, but have been trying games since then: Earthbound (great), Final Fantasy XIII (I gave up on it), and Chrono Trigger (great).

-The only TBS or RTS type game I've ever enjoyed was Age of Empires II.

So I generally play RPGs (lots of BioWare and Bethesda), 3D Platformers (classic Rare games. Donkey Kong 64 is among my all-time favorites), Action (God of War) and Adventure (Zelda, Enslaved, Uncharted) games. I do try some of the genres I don't like (excluding horror. I stay the hell away from those). And my sampling of JRPGs so far has been encouraging. But I still think my biases are too many to really say I'm open-minded.

Being open minded dose not mean you should like every game, to me it sounds like you are more tolerant of failure.
I have never seen the problem with long load times, that just means i have a chance to get myself a snack before i continue.

i find myself with the reverse problem, i find too many people claim that this game is "greatest ever made", so i play it and (while i play them through) find it to be terreble.

ya when i see a games flaws i make note of it, and discuss it on forums and such, i can usually look past it and the flaws rarely ruin my experience(most often its the experience its self that dose that)

But why would their complaints (chewing it up etc.) about a game bother you?

Either they are unwarranted complaints and can be ignored, or they're warranted complaints that you just don't assign the same weight as the poster of it. Neither should be of any concern aside from if they bring to attention previously unseen flaws that need to be factored into one's own evaluation.

I'm pretty sure plenty of people would have a lot of harsh words to say on the genres I play - many of them warranted - but why would it ever be "painful" for me to see them express what is ultimately only their weighing of their individual scales, when I've got my own set scales to be the sole judge of what I like?

I just love games, you name a game, I probably like it. I can even cope, and have patience with various things that others would find game breaking, such as glitches, long loading, long tutorials, lack of story ect.

Hell, i even found some fun with sonic 2006, which as most people would think is a fucking disaster because it fails in a lot of key areas. I however looked passed all its various faults, and just took the game how it is, and not wishing of what it could of been like.

It's because of my open mindedness to gaming as a whole, it feels really painful to see all my favourite games get chewed up and spat on by various people on the forums. For example say Red faction guerilla, great game in my eyes, but not at all great to some. Some people will say how it lacks in story, has repetitive gameplay ect. I never found those things wrong about the game, I just took the rough with the smooth, and appreciated how much work was put into making the game.

I surely can't be the only person who is like this, so speak up fellow escapists, are you as open minded to games just as much as me. Do you have the patience to take the rough with the smooth, and to appreciate a fine game. Also do you enjoy a lot of games regardless of genre.

That's not really open mindedness, it's open minded to try lots of different games but hating crap games is not exactly closed mindedness.

Well...that's not what I'm trying to imply.

If someone wants to be like that then fine more power to them, it just not how i feel about gaming.

I only made this topic, because i wondered if people could relate to my way of thinking.

It's 'aN open minded gamer.' An is the grammatical article used when referring to a noun/adjective proceeding a noun when the next word begins with a vowel. 'a' proceeds nouns/etc that begin with a consonant.

No, you are not open minded, you're just easy to please. My grandpa likes food, every single type of food you can think of, he'll eat it and enjoy it. Not because he's an open minded culinarist, but because he grew up during WW2 when food was scarce.

Not to your extent, although I'm willing to play a lot more games than most people are. My open mindedness extends to all genres, but not all games within each genre.

I'm similar in some ways and the opposite in others. I will play just about any game that's put in front of me (I generally buy most games at launch since I have a great excuse) but I also have very high, exacting standards so I generally don't complete too many games.

That being said I'm far more likely to complete a flawed game that tries something new (particularly story wise) than a highly polished sequel.
