Why have there been so many "let's start an RPG" threads recently?

I don't have any problem with it, and run a White Wolf system play-by-post of the Dresden Files (I only mention it to establish my nerd cred), but there seems to be a marked increase in the number of threads of this nature recently. This is probably as good a place as any to form a group, but I'd never seen them before a couple of weeks ago

RPing started off small with the Starcraft RP, but got massive with WH40k and by the end of the zombies game it became clear that one RP at a time wasn't enough to contain us all. The DnD RP came about thanks to a few stubborn posterswho wouldn't shut up about having a PbP- myself included. People liking some settings but hating others also had a bit to do with the RP explosion: demand creates supply.

I love both star wars and DnD...

why not both?

there are a lot of 'lets start a' ones as people are trying to reach a consensus, the Star war one is up and hopefully the DnD one soon (i have a big nerd-boner over this one)

they'll soon be gone leaving the only the placenta of consensus and the baby of conclusion

thats one placenta i might have to share!

Eww.

I guess it boomed massively with Galt's Zombie one. My StarCraft one had barely 4 pages. Galt's is probably the biggest thread in all the Escapist. I just hope the Cyberpunk one doesn't go to out-of-whack. I need to keep up.

I'm also qued up for Larenxis Evil party one. I guess we like them because it gives us something to do that's fun aside from flaming trolls to death.

I think the giant amount of posting that went into the Zombie one (15 pages in a week) brought the RP's to the public light. Seeing these amounts of posts I suppose people figured that they are good and wanted a piece of the deceiptful pie.

There are things wrong with the RP, they sometimes segregate the community, especially when you have a lot going at one time, people might sign up for the sole purpose of joining a RP and fuck it up for everyone else (intentionally or not) and people will eventually make a RP and leave it hence fucking everything up for everyone involved.

They are still really fun though, so just lets them live and see what happens in the future.

i don't know could have something do with the 4th edition of d&d being released recently and a couple big mmo's either being released or soon to have the forces of choas unleashed so the blood god may be satiated

that and we're geeks and rpg's are our bread and butter

?!?!?!?!?!

Wait...you don't know what D&D is to the extent that you respond to a single sentance about it as though it were something bizzare? Wha...and here I was thinking that the game had become mainstream! I'd expect that sort of reaction to, say, some weird fetish--not something as well-known as D&D.

To answer the main topic of conversation: Most of the new RPs started when someone started a D&D thread a little while ago and the people posting on it decided to start a play-by-post game. Then it turned into two groups, then three. Then a couple other threads sprouted up. And of course the latest lynching RP. Snowball effect, I guess.

Actually, for your own sake (and aforementioned "nerd cred", thanks Seldon lmao) you should continue reading. Everybody hears/sees "fantasy role playing" and their minds jump to some weird fetish thing. *shakes head*

Have you played any Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate?

EDIT: I was beat to my reprimand.

And I also think that the arrival of 4.0 spurred some of us geekier ones to mention it on the forum to see if anyone else was interested in D&D. 4.0 hype enchanted me, and suddenly all I could think about was the poor little gnome.

"I called my mom, and I was like 'Hey mom, guess what? I'm a monster, RAR!'"

What are they teaching kids in college these days? You can't spend all your time having sex and going to class!

I guess maybe on-line gaming has reduced the social need or opportunity for paper-and-pen RPGs, but I still thought everyone discovered D&D at least in college. There are (were?) other, similar games as well: Paranoia, Dark Conspiracy, Twilight: 2000, Macho Women With Guns, something for every taste. It doesn't require computer access and actually gets you face to face with friends. And that's a good thing.

I think the RPs started out with Rain's Lynchfest and were spurred on by the MGG troll slaying. My RPs sort of blew things out of proportion (+1000 replies!?)and now there's a large chunk of the off-topic thread devoted to the RPs. I think my lack of updating the Zombie RP actually contributed to it's growth. I probably should have tried to keep the population under control and on topic. But hey, now there's a great new interest in this. We might even get a whole new forum section if we're lucky.

To be blunt, RP's are fun!

Mmmmm new forums? Could call it "make a game" so it has all of the games going through here, not just the RP's.

A topic devoted to Internet games should be good, that way Off Topic will stay Off Topic and not become "Off Topic, games, roleplays and crazy shit".

Idea for a new forum section devoted to games and such seconded. I've seen many forums with sections like this, and with the sudden flux of RPGs in the forums, I think it's time the Escapist followed suit.

I couldn't say about the other ones but Paranoia is still going strong and has me coloured all kinds of tempted.

I have to agree here. It might just be me but with a part of the board being devoted to RPs there seems to be less general Off-Topic discussioning going on.

Yes, I think that when RPs have lots and lots of members the DM needs to make with the scythe quick and often.
