Define what you mean by compelling?

Braid, Trine, Amnesia: TDD, I think all of these have compelling single-player experiences, but they might not be for you, and admittedly, end up being linear.

Are you looking for an open-ended sort of sandbox or open RPG, or more of a set-on-one-path-mostly linear single player "epic" story experience?

I loved Amnesia, It's exactly what I'm looking for right now! (although I'm not exactly in a horror mood)

Trine sounds interesting.

And I've enjoyed both sandbox games like Red Dead and linear games like Amnesia, whatever you have to offer.

And thanks everyone for the suggests so far! I'm looking through reviews and demos and such of the games that have been suggested and I haven't yet played.

Castlevania: lords of shadow is a fun game. The story is pretty interesting and the gameplay is really addicting. Lots of fast pace action, lots of moves you can learn. Quite an assortment of environments and cool enemies to go along with it.

The Witcher 2 was very good in my opinion. Just make sure you set it on easy mode or cheat (like I do!) because teh combat system is hard as fuck.

If you have access to a PSP I would have to recommend Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, I have racked up over 80 hours of gameplay on that game and I am nowhere near finished.
Otherwise, I would go for the Warcraft RTS series, especially WC3 and the Frozen Throne, it has one of the best storylines that I have seen in a RTS. Anything else I can think of has already been mentioned in this thread.

Gralian: My favorite genre is FPS. Things like Half-life, Halo, Bioshock and such have been my all time favorites. BUT any good game would do me now. Also, I don't have the time to assimilate myself into your witcher universe thing. But thanks anyway!

Frontastic: I saw Metro 2033 on a shelf once. I haven't heard -anything- else. That makes me suspicious of it's quality, but you think it's good?

Look again, it is widely loved by people who played it. It is very linear, but that is mostly to drive the story, and not always a bad thing. I know you think you have an awesome PC but Metro 2033 is the new Crysis and is punishing with maximum details, all DX11 thingys turned on, and Phyx enabled. It still looks good scaled back a bit.

The Witcher is pretty good story wise, I find the combat a bit anoying but play for the story and you'll be happier. You don't need to read the books, but keep the manual handy. Buy it from GOG DRM free.

STALKER is of course awesome, and there are mods to make it even more awesome. Just don't expect to run and gun, but creep and explore and you'll go a long way. Oh and don't be afraid to save scum a little bit in the begining.

Alpha Protocol, it's third person and an RPG, but is so much better than the reviews for it indicate. I had no trouble with it on PC, but pick it up in a bargain bin so you aren't out a lot of money if for some reason it bugs out on your system.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, the best first person/third person RPG, download the unofficial patch and enjoy.

I -didn't- like Alan Wake, but that's the only one I have played that I didn't like.

If you don't need an extensive narrative and older games don't bother you, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is still a blast. Not too long, though (it was 15 hours on my first playthrough, and I play very deliberately). It's on XBox Live, if you have that.

Speaking of XBox Live, Shadow Complex is also very fun: Metroid meets Metal Gear Solid. Story is a bit dumb though, and not too long (15 hours).

I'm loving Bayonetta, but it's a very daft, bonkers kind of game. I don't know if that would put you off or not.

You should play the first Portal if you haven't already.

Also, you said you have a Wii (even though you are reluctant to dig it out). I found both of the No More Heroes games to be pretty compelling, especially for the boss fights. Still, the first game has some poor design choices (it has an 'open world' setting that's nearly empty and requires a bit of grinding, for instance) and both games have some pretty crude and juvenile aspects to them (although they seem to be intended as satire). At this point, both games can probably be gotten for very little, and their unique art style, craziness and humor (not to mention surprisingly good use of the Wii remote) made them worth my time.

the Bioshock, Mass Effect, Uncharted and Half Life series are all good single player games.
Personally I think Bioshock gets better the farther into it you are.

The last single player experience I enjoyed was Portal 2. It's been awhile, and I really feel like getting into another one. Just whatever suggestions you have, if you have the time to help me out here. I'm pretty bored and one of those single player games that you just get lost in would hit the spot right now.

All kidding aside, I would suggest oblivion or morrowind, if ur a WRPG fan; Dragon Age, if ur a fan of party-based RPGs; Bioshock, if u haven't played it; and if ur a fan of MMOs, try DDO.

I would make suggestions for other genres, but the only other genre I play is FPS and the only two really good story-lines(IMHO) that I've seen in FPS games is the original Halo, which I assume you've played, and Bioshock, which u should give a try no matter what genres you typically like.

If you've got a PS2, then I would suggest finding a copy of Psychonauts, if you haven't played it already. It's fun and brilliant. Also, it has fantastic humor and writing.

Yeeeeah I wish I could afford a PS3, and then play all the exclusive series I've missed out on, like god of war, and infamous, and.... Um, well I'm sure there are other really appealing PS3 exclusives.
