I'm new here...

I was helping a friend make an account, and afterwords the first thing he did is make a thread announcing his presence. That wasn't the first "I'm new here" thread I've seen, and I doubt it will be the last, but it got me thinking about a few things.

I myself don't mind them if the thread is to actually introduce the user. For example telling interests, a little about themselves, or something like that. When they just say "Hey I joined" in what seems like a way to raise their post count, it slightly annoys me.

So the end result of this is me wondering how others feel about this. When you first joined the Escapist did you make an "I'm new here" thread? And when you see one how do you react? Do you jump in with helpful advice, go on by with a look of indifference, or sigh in annoyance.

No, I did not make one. I don't post in such threads, I don't really care, there are a lot of members here, some are just more vocal than others.

I didnt make a whole tread on it but I made a footnote about my newness on my first thread, which was a debate about the existence of Shakespear as an actual human being. If I remeber right I got a good 150-ish responses. Not bad for a 1st thread.

I don't dislike them. It's good to get to know new people. I didn't make one myself though. I didn't need to get any help or anything like that, so I didn't see any point.

When I first made an account, I didn't make an "I'm New Here" thread.

Whenever I see threads like that, I always just say "Hi" and "enjoy your stay".

On reflection, that kind of thread would have been a better idea than what I did for my first thread on my first account (not this account, one I made a long time ago and forgot the password to)

I didn't make one. I came here in the early days, when the 'Pist was so small that if you posted anything, people would immediately notice the new person.
I personally like them, as it shows humility, and gives me a chance to dispense my infinite wisdom.

No I didn't make one when I first got here. I remember there was one started up by one of the Red Guards long ago and posted in that one, but I haven't seen it in a long time. But whenever I see one of those I welcome the OP to the Escpaist and embed a link to the Forum Rules and Guidelines and ask that they read them so as to know what the rules are.

Nope.
I just started talking in threads i found interesting, and talking to other people.
If i see "Im new here" Threads, and im the first one there, i usually say hi and point to the Forum Rules, not to be rude but just to make sure they have seen it and know how to find it.

I welcome them.

And immediately explain our little basement issue...

Though I never made a "I'm new" post, I considered it.

Nah I didn't make one, and they don't really promote much discussion past "hi there".

I don't really mind other people making them though.

Nope. First post was in an introductions topic.
If I see one I usually just say "Welcome to the Escapist, don't do something stupid"

EDIT: I don't really care if people make them.

I didn't make one, I just jumped right in and started posting. As for how I feel about people making "I'm new threads", well....
I don't particularly like it. It seems a little attention-seeking to create a whole thread just to say that you joined the site, not to mention that in the vast sea of users that is The Escapist, the probability of me giving a crap what you have to say is very, very low. Let your posts do the talking, not a "I'm new here. Pay attention to me" thread.

I pretty much just jumped in here and started bugging people.

Also I don't really have a problem with them but I can see how it can be seen as irritating.

I never made a I am new post, but then if I did they would have never let me in would they? I figure you are allowed to make the mbut be ready for the flow of bad jokes we will throw at you. Also if you dislike the thread title why read the thread?

I never mentioned that I joined. I just... joined. And then I posted a lot. I didn't see the need to tell people that I was here. They would find out when they say that I posted...

I never made one myself, but I did think about making one when I started. Instead I just went and browsed through threads just trying to make myself feel more comfortable. It definitely worked out for me at least. But as to when I see one, I usually take a peak at what others say to newcomers. I kinda take the advice they give to other new people without actually making a new thread like that. I don't look down on newbies or anything especially when they start out and ask around for help. So when another "I'm new" thread pops up, I just let it be.
