I'm Thinking of Getting a 360

If you're a PC/PS3 gamer up until now then there really aren't a whole lot of 360 games that aren't already available on those platforms. But there are some.

All of the Halo games are exclusives.
Gears of War 2, 3 and Judgement are exclusives.
Fable 2 is an exclusive.
All of the Forza games are exclusives.

And that's about it.

Quite a few XBLA titles still haven't escaped to PC or PS3, sadly
And for some bizarre reason, a lot of Rising Star games only came to the West as 360 games - many ports of PS3 titles in Japan

The PS3 has the definitive Director's Cut of Deadly Premonition so that's actually the best version.
Project Gotham Racing? Fair Enough. But it is pretty old by now, with little hope of the series ever getting a revival.

I'm sure there are some XBLA titles exclusive to 360, but can you name me any good ones?

So I've been using PC and PS3 but there's some 360 games I wanted to play. Since Xbox One isn't backwards compatible and doesn't have any games out or coming out soon that I want to play, I was thinking of getting a 360 so I could experience the games I missed and play online with my friend who still uses his regularly. Obviously, I want the cheapest deal I can find. I know Gamestop has some deals for 20 gig refurbished systems but used systems are even cheaper on Amazon. I know if I get it from Gamestop, I can just bring it in if I have any red ring related issues. If I buy it used on Amazon and get a red ring, is there anything I can do or am I pretty much shit out of luck? Realistically I'll probably only have it for a year or two, but I'd still like to have some kind of insurance in the event of system failure

Here is my advice... check Best Buy and their online sales. I just purchases an Xbox 360 for my son for Christmas and got the bundle from them for around $180ish. Shipped to my house was something like $202, or so. Thats the 250G, bundled with Halo 4, Tomb Raider, and I think two other games as well. Its a fantastic deal, and I will try to go find the link and come back here and put it up for you. Bear with me, though, I am at work, and can get really busy, really fast. Be back as soon as I can.

Just get a brand new console. They're quite cheap and with electronics you really should get some warranty.

My advice is don't bother...the 360 breaks with alarming frequency. My last reconditioned one lasted 13 months and so far i've broken 6 machines in total...it's the main reason i won't ever spend money with microsoft again.

I've always suspected that most people who complain about their 360s breaking constantly are doing something wrong. I bought my 360 in 2008 and it still works perfectly. This is anecdotal I know, but I know several people who have had 360s for as long or longer and the only one who's ever replaced one is my brother. It's not like his was defective either, it was dropped and the fans stopped running.

We aren't part of some machine worshiping cult who keeps their consoles in hermetically sealed, refrigerated, gyroscopically stabilized containers either.

Ok, first I have to apologize. Apparently that was just the deal for Cyber Monday to get this bundle for around $180. Also, let me add a suggestion... grab Ascend: Hand of Kul. Its free (yes, it has microtransactions, but you dont have to have them to succeed or do well at the game) and for me personally, its very addicting.

PC/360/PS3/WII owner here, Love them all but the 360 (aside from the PC) has the most games with the better ports. Tho I would check the SKU when you go used the newer the better!

Graphically, they removed a very pleasant green-grey filter that gave the game a very pervasive atmosphere, which... okay well that's the biggest thing. The lack of filter is obviously a matter of opinion, but it is a major difference in the aesthetic and it's one that many, many people have not appreciated.

The weirdest thing has got to be this:

Note that they removed the moving water texture (the right) and replaced it in the Director's Cut with fucking nothing (left). It's just... weird. Now Deadly Premonition being the cult comedy hit of the decade, I'm almost willing to bet that they made it worse on purpose - it surely would not have escaped Swery's mind, making it a little inside joke; a mockery, if you will, of Director's Cuts. But making it look worse on purpose still has the side-effect of making it look worse.

...anyway, as for the rest of your post: 1) age doesn't mean squat regarding quality, 2_ Geometry Wars 2, the updated Banjo-Kazooie releases (STOP 'N SWAP YEEAAAH), The Dishwasher series supposedly?, 'Splosion Man, 3) I didn't think we were, my mistake, and 4) a bunch of their shmups like Akai Katana and Deathsmiles.

I got lucky and bought a 05 model off of Ebay and it didn't have red ring. I think the 05 model had like a 25% chance of getting it.

And if anyone is lucky enough to find a copy of Silent Hill 2 for the original Xbox (black, 10 lb. monstrosity), it's BC on 360 and damn does it look nice. You can turn off the fog elements as well and it looks great. They re-released it in HD but I heard that version is just crap. Oh right, and the original Ghost Recon series, plus The Simpsons Hit and Run is BC on 360 as well, which is really the best Simpsons game ever.

*EDIT* Also, Bayonetta runs just fine on PS3. I have it for both 360 and PS3[footnote]I have no idea how I ended up buying both versions[/footnote] and after patching it runs exactly the same.

I have an Xbox, and I'm thinking of getting a PS3 because for one, the PS4/Xbox One are both way too expensive and also aren't backwards compatible. It was either that or a better Xbox with more memory (because I have the 4gb Xbox. Don't laugh. I made a promise to myself to get as many PS3 exclusives as I can, because then my purchase will be more than worth it, a quick trip down to CEX ought to do the trick!

Lets see...2 rings of doom, 1 sound card malfunction and 3 disc drive seizures (1 of which means the drive won't even open anymore). Thats my personal experience.

Anecdotally...1 friend has had 6 failures aswell, 2 for the cd drive, 3 rings of doom and 1 where he spilt coffee on it (so not really a failure but i added it to back your opinion a little).

All the rest of my friends who have had a 360 now have a broken 360 that no longer reads games or the drive wont open with the case still on. This is the problem i've had most often...some games won't read, then most games won't read, then no games work and after a short while the drive stops functioning. You can tell when your having drive problems because the machine requires itself to read the disc in the drive before it boots up into the operating system and because of that it takes forever to boot up. You can temporarily fix this problem by opening the drive during the boot up but eventually that leads to the drive breaking completely. I've even replaced the drive in 1 machine and it didn't fix the problem.

Me and the other friend who have had 6 failures are hardcore gamers that play their machines for at least 40 hours a week and the 360 cannot handle being used for such lengths of time. If you cast your mind back to when it released, it was so badly broken they upped the warranty to 3 years and during that period i went through my first 3 machines. Since then it's been cd drive after cd drive...not just for me but pretty much everyone around me aswell. Black machines, white machines, even the elite...they have all suffered similar consistent problems. That is why i warn people away...the hardware is terrible!

The red ring of death is mostly a "feature" of the original 360s, Slims have a temp sensor in it which will turn off the system and stop it from melting, not that I've ever experienced it firsthand since it runs quite cool. I've no idea if the latest model is any good or not. Besides the original 360 has a separate internet wireless adaptor and the pads are naff.

I personally would never buy 2nd hand consoles online if I can avoid it, too many ppl offload dodgy systems. Better to source it locally so you can get a refund if anything goes wrong (depending on what warranties come as std where you live) and test it out before you take it home. With so many ppl trading in their last gen consoles now is the time to buy a 2nd hand system, plus games are pretty cheap even rarer Japanese games which might possibly raise in price like older systems do.

I know original 360s had production numbers on the back which told you roughly it's age, it might be the same for the slims.

What about buying it online if it's new? Do all new 360 consoles come with a warranty or only the ones you buy from brick and mortar stores? I know the Microsoft website is having a pretty sweet deal on a 250 gig 360 for $200. I suppose it would be weird to not get a warranty when buying directly from Microsoft, but I just want to make sure

Well, if you have a PC getting a 360 would be redundant as most games are already on PC. You'd be much better getting something different like the Wii U. Whatever you do, make sure you don't get Xboned!
