Hey escapists. I am purchasing an Imac in a few days and I know you can format part of your hard-drive to run windows. But can you do this with an exteral harddrive? that way I can run windows off of the external and keep all the memory on the built in hardrive for the mac. thanks

If you want to run windows, just scrap the idea of getting a mac and pick up a far superior windows based box. You can actually game on a windows box.

I think you can, but you'd be much better off just partitioning the internal hard drive, much faster etc...

Look up a video or guide on setting up "Bootcamp" on a mac. That is basically the installation wizard that will partition the drive for you so you can install Windows on it.

While I do agree, that's hardly constructive.

I'd do what furburt suggested, and partition the internal drive so that there's a windows partition. My understanding is that the default mac partition won't play nice with the default windows one, so you'll likely have to have a third partition to keep files (though MACos may be able to read the windows format, I just know it won't work the other way). Booting from removable drives is not only slow, but can cause problems in the future.

Erm, you can game perfectly well on a mac too. I know, I did it for 3 years. Never had any problems.
Dammit man, stop that. I'm pretty sure there's a legal limit on how many times you're allowed to ninja me in a single thread.

I think you can. Search for a similar question in the Mac forums, and you'll no doubt find an answer. And have fun with that. iMacs are amazing machines.

If all you're going to do is go Windows fanboy on us, don't post in a thread like this. It's not constructive and adds nothing to the conversation. Besides, you're wrong.

Exactly what Furburt said, I've played tons of games on my Mac. Assassins Creed, Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age, Portal, Psychonauts, all of which run perfectly fine.

OT: I say install Windows on the internal drive, it's probably much easier and faster in the long run.
