Immersion is when you press "L1" during a cutscene in metal gear and stare at someone's gratuitous cleavage.
in all seriousness though, i agree that Tie Fighter was insanely immersive. they balanced the right amount of monotonous (patrols and border checkpoints) missions against exciting attack missions. each patrol mission making you feel the taste of an Empire Pilot's daily grind without getting boring itself. i remember constantly being aware of the inherent frailty of my tie fighter and actually getting excited when my convoy was attacked because it was actually unexpected since nothing really happened on the last convoy mission.L.B.
