immersion, a term used to describe how much someone is 'into' a game. immersion cannot be quantified until now.

my test for immersion is simple, its called the ballsack test. Imagine you are playing a game and you have and itchy sack, do you stop playing and break immersion to scratch or are you so immersed that you wait till youve finished a section first? if the answer is the latter then the game is truly immersive

A valid point. Already the results will be skewed.

A better test. It once took a power-outage for me to realize I had been playing Blitzkrieg 2 for 10 hours.

heres my test:

you start playing a game and 8 hours later you:

A- you just realized you played for 8 hours without noticing it = immersive (fallout3/NV)

B- you heard your mom tell you to stop playing computer games/go outside/do chores and other things or generally every half hour you talk to a friend on skype or surf the web = not immersive.

Thanks for pointing that out, so I don't have to <3
Also included are men who have/had testicular cancer or had them removed for any other reason. Or possibly never had them.
As such, your test truly sucks, OP. Not really sorry to say it.
But I'm with Daystar on this one. Losing track of time and continuing to play a game for a long (mostly unbroken) period of time is a pretty good test.

That's not immersion, that's focus or concentration. If i'm driving and i have an itch but need to change gear, i'll change gear first. Besides, if i take my hands off the controls, psycho mantis will know.

He'll know.

Sorry for double, bad browser! But since i'm here again, i'll say that immersion is when you'll either scratch without thought, not notice the itch at all, or reach in vain for the 'scratch nads' button.

Sins of a Solar Empire and Civilization does this to me...

I don't even want to pick up Gal Civ...

I think Yahtzee once said there are two reasons to stop playing a game; either you grow bored of it or "oh god, the sun is rising". I think the later is a nice way of indicating if a game has good immersion.

I think for console players not noticing that part of your hand has gone numb due to gripping the comptroller is a good indicator of immersion.

Sounds like Baldur's Gate to me. Was playing it, suddenly felt like i needed to pee so i stopped playing. Suddenly i felt thirsty and hungry then I looked at the clock I noticed i played for almost 7 hours straight >.<

Well if they have an itchy sack, and they stop to scratch it, not only is the game not immersive, but there are more questions left to be answered.

No, immersion is when you start to scratch your character's itchy ballsack because it's bothering you. Or maybe when you think of scratching ballsacks while you are not playing the game. Though if that's a byproduct of the games you are playing, you probably have some other issues that need to be worked out.
