Immortality...

Immortality is something most people have thought about and I know a lot may have wanted it. Despite this, is it really a good thing to live forever? This something I have wonder for a while and now, I ask you...is immortality truly a gift? Or is it a curse?

To watch as the people you love slowly are taken by the disease known as time, watching them grow older and older as you do not age a day until finally they are gone? Then, as time passes you stop making friends because you know they will all die one day. Then inside you a hate grows for all of life. A hate born of thousands of lives spent alone with no one.

Immortality would be a curse. Not a gift.

ok, so I go to school, the school changes its generators every year, am I the same person?

Ok, so I go to college, they change their rooms every 7 years, am I the same?
YES.
Ok, so my body changes every 70 years, skin, liver, lung, pancreas, kidneys, bone marrow, eyes, etc. Am I the same?
Neurons don't change, we do not regenerate brain matter, we don't suddenly become different people unless our mind has undergone significant trauma. arguing we become different people because our bodies regenerate is silly. almost...13 year old logic.

As someone who is absolutely terrified of death, i would give anything to be immortal.

It'll be nice for a while but eventually people are going to notice the fact that you aren't evolving like the rest of the race. It's only a matter of time before you end up on an operating table or, some other science facility where people will be trying to dissect you.

Other than that, you could end up either wandering a devestated waste-land (in the event of an asteroid strike) or end up floating around in space (in the event of planetary destruction). Then if you do end up on another planet, you'll be among aliens who won't know what the hell to do with/ about you.

If i stayed 25 forever it would be awesome. I would conquer the world. Also, i'd enter loads of tontines and troll the other people when they get old.

I'd love to have immortality, but I'd like to stay at a particular age, and still have the ability to die, temporarily of course, but if I get shot at point-blank in the head, I want to die, and then come back.
This may not technically fall under 'immortality', but that's how I would like it to be.

Con: you watch your loved ones die around you

Pro: you have the satisfaction of being able to give joy to countless generations

Debatable: You watch how the world progress's more than anybody else

So in my opinion, you would have days where you see it as a curse but i personally would see it as a gift most of the time

No one wants to die, anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves. People who seek death simply don't want to face the problems going on in their lives, if those problems were gone then they would have no trouble with life, death in this sense is just an escape from pain.

How this relates to immortality is that one would have to weigh the cost of what it means to live forever; is the gain worth the potential for loss? (and since you have an infinite number of options you WILL at some point lose something) In regards to the argument where you would end up losing everything you cared about, like your friends and family, would have been lost over the course of a mortal life-span anyway, so regardless of how much time you have on Earth whether it be a mortal or eternal life time you need to live that life to the fullest so that there are no regrets. Also the idea that life would get boring and monotonous seems short-sighted, there are countless possibilities and unless you become like God or a reality warper you will not "have seen it all".

Would I want to live forever? Yes I would, and in my religion I believe that I will one day anyway, but again this is just a matter of opinion.

Hmm it's a good question, there are too many variables though. Like will you still be able to feel pain and will you have the same memory as you do now? I'd assume you wouldn't age otherwise that would be terrible. I don't know, I think there would be a hell of a lot bad about it. But given the choice I would probably still take it. If just because I could use it as a pick up line. Think about the possibilities...

Imagine the stuff I could do and the things I could accomplish,sure there's the undeniably sad part of everybody I know dying,but after that it's all up from there.(IMO)

I'd take immortality for sure, but only on the condition I could choose when to die. I'd get sick of life eventually. I'm sick of being home at the moment at the end of this 2 week holiday from school.
If it came with the added benefit of being invulnerable too (can't feel pain, be injured, become ill, etc.), I think I'd be even happier. Join the army, police force, spy services and whatever.

If it's stay at age 30 for the rest of your life, it might be cool.
If it's age until your body tires to corrode but your immortality prevents it, it might suck.

OT: I would find it actually a curse, of detachment from all (as you would realize the mortality of such foolish objects/people) and also you would lose all drive, as never being able to die means you can eternally put off things, so you would be lazy and empathetic for all eternity until life completely ends (but even then, you may still exist.)

It might be bad, if you feel hollow inside and each time you die, you wake up with no memories and with a floating skull beside you.

That's eternal life, not immortality. Immortality means you can't be killed by any means whatsoever.
