It will not wreck your car. Just leave it running when you drop off the pizza. Thats what all the other delivery drivers do.
Yeah I've been thinking about doing that, but you know not when I go into an apartment or something, I'll have to remember that when I deliver to a house or something......uuuummm stupid question I just thought of, if I leave my car running and close the door will it auto lock at any time?
have a spare key made. that way you can lock the door and leave the car running then get back in.

So seeing as how I am now a delivery boy (pizza) my dad (and other people) have told me it will wreck my car (starting and stopping) and I have figured out it's my starter (that would get wrecked....before other things) so how much is a starter? My car is a 2004 Pontiac Grand AM
I would suggest asking it to a car pro or garage instead of a unreliable source like the internet

Starting and stopping your car will not wreck your starter.
Can anyone confirm this?? Because I have been told by many people that it will ruin it
I will explain it.

Your car can be wrecked by constant stopping and starting if you haven't changed the oil frequently enough, if the filter or the oil pickup pipe is blocked, on some engines if the oil feed pipe nozzles are blocked, or if you have put the wrong oil in and it is too thick.

This is because if any of the above conditions occur, oil isn't circulated around your engine properly and it wears out prematurely. Running it for a short period of time causes the oil to settle in the bottom if the oil can't move easily.

The starter motor commutator bushes are what usually fail on starter motors, and frequency of use does wear them down. But they are remarkably cheap anyway, and starting and stopping won't wreck your engine unless your car is a poor starter and you need to crank it several times to get it going.
So basically change my oil every so often, also what do you mean by crank it? (I should mention now I only know how to drive a car, I know NOTHING about them, well very little)
Check your oil, is it goldeny yellow or black?

If it is black it is bad.

Take out your dipstick, and feel the oil between your fingers. Does it feel smooth? Can you feel any kind of grit or hardness in there? Unless it is smooth the oil is bad.

To crank is to start. Every time you hear the "WHERRR WHERRR WHERRRR" noise on start that is cranking. If you are holding the key on "start" for a long time you are wearing the commutator bushes inside the starter motor. If you only need to whack it to "start" for a second then you don't need to worry.

If your car doesn't start, your starter is bad.
Ahh internet mechanics, that's the same logic as my computer won't start so my power button must be busted. If you are having trouble turning the engine over i.e whirr whirrr whirrr then it is more likely to be the battery that is failing rather than the starter motor. The nature of the driving you are doing will put a considerable extra level of strain on the battery and it usually takes a good 30 minutes of solid driving to recharge the battery to the level it was at before you turned the engine over. If you are running it from place to place and then stopping and starting and not giving it a good run then you will drain the cold crank power of the battery very quickly.

The reason why you would want to look at the battery first is because.

a). It the more likely to fail than the starter motor
b). It is piss easy to check, 30 seconds with a tester will tell you good battery, recharge battery or replace cause it's wanked
c). It is cheaper to replace than a starter.

Just out of curiosity how did you arrive at the conclusion that it was the starter that was causing issue?

As for putting wear on the starter motor from the driving you are doing, well yeah if you start the car twice as much a day as someone else then chances are the starter motor will wear out twice as fast. The starter motor has components inside it which are liable to wear and tear as any moving parts are.

Just make sure you change your battery every 3-4 years. Also why not make a second key so you can lock the car but leave it running while you deliver. :)

I don't see how that's going to hurt the car though, my car is way older and probably has been started alot more times than yours and it still runs just fine.
