So these are some ideas that have been mulling around in my brain thing ever since all these talks of piracy and alternative business models have been flying around. I'm curious to know as a gaming community what you would like to see.
Cloud Gaming:
(Editor's Note: I'm going to use Sony and Final Fantasy as an example, sue me)
Imagine this:
You boot up your copy of Final Fantasy XV on your PS3, you're traveling across the world, going through the story, fighting monsters, learning spells, earning super-ultra-grid-sphere-point-credits... darn... time to go to school/work.
You sit down at work/school on your break, hop on your computer and log into your social networking site. You launch the Final Fantasy XV "Gaia Training System" where you take the characters and content from your current PS3 game at home, and can fight browser-based random encounter battles for items, special stat bonuses, unlockable skills, more super-ultra-grid-sphere-point-credits.
You head out on your lunch break and your phone SMS's you multiple choice trivia questions with in-game bonus prizes and choose-your-own-adventure type sidequests that can unlock ulimate weapons and possibly additional characters in the PS3 version of the game at home.
After your day ends, you have to take the bus or rail to your friends apartment the next town over; on your way there you load up your PSP2 and jump into the graphically reduced Final Fantasy XV - Storm's Story in which you play from the perspective of a soldier of the enemy empire fighting for what he believes is right; where the choices you make can affect the storyline of the main game on your PS3.
LCD Gaming:
Not what you're thinking; LCD in this case stands for "Lowest Common Denominator." LCD gaming is a concept that I think could be possible in the near future with the rise (or plateau-ing) of technology in gaming, but a semblance of it could even happen today:
SquareEnix releases the Chrono Trigger - 20th Anniversary Edition (because you know they will). This game is a 2D slightly graphically enhanced retool of the classic. It's downloadable over the PSN. You start playing on the PS3... leave... switch to the PSP2... power that off... play the browser-based version... leave again, and play the phone-based app version. All the same game; all saved in the clould.
What we would have here is a multi-platform, identical version of a game that is accessible and playable from anywhere, anytime, no matter what... you put down one interface, pick up another; total seamlessness.
====
Do either of these scenarios sound feasible or appealing? How much would you be willing to pay for this as a consumer? Do you see this as a way to counter problems like piracy?
Do you have a better idea?
