First, in spite of the fact that' it's still the first in certain parts of the world, I would like to assure you that this isn't a prank. This is actually something which I am attempting to be serious about.

Now that I've ditched th e disclaimer,I want to talk about something that has been pressing on me for several months now. Pessimism. Sure, I could talk about the media, or my family, or the preachers at heir pulpits, and cite examples of how it seems like everyone is fixated on the worse possible scenario, and continually predicting the doom of us all.

Well, this is my only piece of advice: Can it.

....

Okay, fine, I'll elaborate. When I was a young boy, I was told if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. Now, my grandmother told me this, and my teachers and several others. But yet, they didn't take their own advice. they decided to rant and complain about everything that is wrong, and maintain an almost unending air of gloom and doom.

Maybe I'm just lucky, or I live in a particularly nice place. I don't know. But, in spite of being unemployed in this economy, I like to be optimistic. Contrary to what everyone seems certain of, the world's not getting all that much worse. Don't believe me? Look at the middle ages. Lighting people on fire and dipping them boiling oil used to be common methods of execution. Holy Wars weren't news to anyone, anywhere.

I'm not saying everyone's doing perfect, or that the world is not in need of more good things.
I'm not saying we're living in a peaceful, perfect world. I'm saying the world's improving. And that we're trying. People are trying to be more globally and environmentally conscious. People are trying to think about he consequences of heir actions without fatalism. People are starting to learn things, new ideas and plans are being formed and questions are being answered in new and interesting ways. We're curing diseases and throwing out preconceptions and giving everyone a new chance.

So the next time you hear someone say we're doomed, or that things are falling apart, or that it was so much better way back when, keep whistling. The world's not gonna end over most of the things happening out here now, and honestly, if it did, youwouldn't be able to do a thing abut it. So keep a grin on, eh?

Optimistically Yours,
Theo

Ha. Yours is an evil laugh.

Um... I'm sure I had something to say that I was planning on writing after the above statement was made, but I seem to have forgotten a good portion of it.

Simply put:
I agree.

Right now I'm very optimistic about my pessimism...

Lol, sorry. I'm usally an optimistic person, but part of that comes from my confidence in myself and my own abilities. I believe if you have the security to trust yourself and know you're going to do the right thing then being optimistic not only about yourself but about life in general is actually fairly easy to do.

I like sunrises - I'm a go-getter! It means I look forward to new challenges and ideas - hence I'm an optimist and loving it.

You made me smile :).

I'm definitely an optimist too. Positive feelings just make the world a better place, and makes waking up each morning not the desperate struggle it is for some people.

I agree that the world seems to be reaching out for each other. If everybody would just unite in universal love for each other and the world, then all wars would end, and we can start solving the problems that really menace our planet.

Keep your heads up, and your smile broad!

ps. Not the long and meaningful reply I wished, but it is still morning and I'm oh so enjoying my coffee!

Firstly, I really like what you've written. I disagree with it on almost every point, but it is well articulated.

I'm a bit of a strange pessimist - where my girlfriend is the eternal optimist I am the eternal pessimist, however I do tend to have the "Aussie" attitude of "she'll be right mate" in a lot of aspects (hence the strange pessimism).

So, why do I disagree with you all, the optimists that you are?

Naivety.

I'm not saying that any of you are naive, this is not a personal attack - but the person who is continuously optimist is the sort of problem that annoys me immensely. The perfect reason for this is currently on the news, where a young girl was taken (and presumably killed) by a croc. The eternal optimist is happy to live near by, confident that "she'll be right" and let their kids do what they like. A mistake a pessimist would not have made.

Also note that most politicians are extremely optimistic, and look how well loved they are on the whole.

So, in summary, great write up, but I disagree.

I'm optimistic about the fate of this topic. I think I'll start singing "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" while tap dancing around my computer.

I'm a pessimist, but whatever. Your point was well made.

I'm not saying we shouldn't prepare for bad things, like the instance with the crocodile. I'm saying we shouldn't constantly ramble about them.

As for the implication that I'm post-modern, I might be. I have heard enough definitions of the term that I neither know nor care about its actual meaning. Regardless, if you could tell me what you meant by that, I'd be interested to hear it.

And as to politicians, I have no idea which ones' you're talking about. Most politician have an odd schism of optimism only in relation to themselves, believing that everything will work when they win and under no other circumstance. That's more egocentrism than optimism. And I find egocentrism to be a very bad thing to develop in human beings, it makes them good at justifying bad things.

I think that pessimism is nessesary at some points in a life/way of thinking, but Optimism should rule over the rest.

An optimist and a pessimist are watching their favourite football team losing the grand final.
The pessimist says "it just can't get any worse!"
The optimist replies "sure it can."

In that case, I agree with your sentiment - on the internet the pessimists definitely are way to vocal.

Don't be sorry for rambling, I am a prolific rambler. Mostly with Groucho-level tangents.

I try to do this too. This is why I very rarely say anything to other people unless factually answering a direct question when failing to do so is even ruder than saying nothing. When I am forced into saying something negative I instantly regret it and am filled with guilty depression for the rest of the day.

Would now be an appropriate time to sing Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life?
Though, being a pessimist, I don't think any of you would join in.

Life's a piece of shit
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true.
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.

Ah, now there's some genuine hard won wisdom. None of that "keep a positive mental attitude as good things come to those who deserve it" nonsense.

I'm an optimist. I don't see how people can be negative all the time
