First, in spite of the fact that' it's still the first in certain parts of the world, I would like to assure you that this isn't a prank. This is actually something which I am attempting to be serious about.
Now that I've ditched th e disclaimer,I want to talk about something that has been pressing on me for several months now. Pessimism. Sure, I could talk about the media, or my family, or the preachers at heir pulpits, and cite examples of how it seems like everyone is fixated on the worse possible scenario, and continually predicting the doom of us all.
Well, this is my only piece of advice: Can it.
....
Okay, fine, I'll elaborate. When I was a young boy, I was told if I didn't have anything nice to say, I shouldn't say anything at all. Now, my grandmother told me this, and my teachers and several others. But yet, they didn't take their own advice. they decided to rant and complain about everything that is wrong, and maintain an almost unending air of gloom and doom.
Maybe I'm just lucky, or I live in a particularly nice place. I don't know. But, in spite of being unemployed in this economy, I like to be optimistic. Contrary to what everyone seems certain of, the world's not getting all that much worse. Don't believe me? Look at the middle ages. Lighting people on fire and dipping them boiling oil used to be common methods of execution. Holy Wars weren't news to anyone, anywhere.
I'm not saying everyone's doing perfect, or that the world is not in need of more good things.
I'm not saying we're living in a peaceful, perfect world. I'm saying the world's improving. And that we're trying. People are trying to be more globally and environmentally conscious. People are trying to think about he consequences of heir actions without fatalism. People are starting to learn things, new ideas and plans are being formed and questions are being answered in new and interesting ways. We're curing diseases and throwing out preconceptions and giving everyone a new chance.
So the next time you hear someone say we're doomed, or that things are falling apart, or that it was so much better way back when, keep whistling. The world's not gonna end over most of the things happening out here now, and honestly, if it did, youwouldn't be able to do a thing abut it. So keep a grin on, eh?
Optimistically Yours,
Theo
