In retrospect, that doesn't make sense...

This is a thread for all those times when you've looked back at a game, and thought "Hang on, why did that happen?". Those moments in-game which you shrug off at the time in order to enjoy the game, but later get you thinking.

For me, the moment came in F.E.A.R. I've installed it on my laptop recently, and have just noticed something. Y'know how the main enemy is supposedly Fettel, with his psychic super-soldiers, right?

If they're psychic, why do they use their radios so much?

The invisible Elites in Halo:CE were supposed to be highly skilled warriors, yet they carried around glowing blue swords that instantly revealed their position.

Because, while they are being controlled by Fettel, they aren't simple meat puppets. He's telepathically giving them orders, which they then carry out. They're still people, just being controlled by someone. Plus, the soldiers themselves aren't psychic. Fettel is.

As for a moment in games that I've had to look back at, I would have to say one comes after reading the Halo novels, then playing the games, and wondering why you can't deflect missles with your bare hands like the Master Chief can in the novels. I mean, it's the same guy. Also, in Advent Rising, there's a part of one level where you are fighting on the outside of a ship. And you aren't wearing a space suit. But you can breathe. And there's gravity holding you to the walkway. You can jump even. How does that work?

My main one was in Jade Empire: the monk explaining the good/evil alignments says that the Closed Fist is not really just being evil, but rather making people fight for themselves unless the odds are stacked against them.

How does one become a follower of this philosophy in the game? By being evil. Doh!

Joke one: Why hasn't Link and Mario not shagged their princesses?

Serious one: Why don't in battle mechanics only apply to in battle sequences and not cutscenes? Now I'm looking at this from a broad spectrum. In Golden Sun The Lost Age the party I transferred over was lvl 99, but Isaac and Ivan were owned by two people who were at most lvl 35 at Jupiter Lighthouse. And yes I know why they couldn't bring back Aeris to life.

Well, most of the options were "Do it yourself losers" when going the way of the closed fist...

there were some things that were just clearly evil, but the point of most of the options was to make things more difficult for people, so that the survivors of whatever tragedy you either initiated, or failed to prevent, will be the strongest people.

I actually liked Jade Empire in that respect, lol

I've needed a good laugh.

For me it's generally how most sniper rifles, or any rifle for that matter. Why doesn't the bullet rise/drop at various ranges?

Now, I realise that some games do have this, but the majority don't.

The guy who helps out Gabe Logan in Syphon Filter 2. I can't remember his name, but early on he gives you weapons and helps you escape. Then, it turns out at the end (spoilers) that he is the bad guy and tries to kill you. Maybe I missed something, but why didn't he just do it when you were alone on a mountain with no weapons?

I still love the Syphon Filter series, but that just didn't sit right with me.

I have lost so many hours at TV tropes, I feel I should share that experience! One of the best sites on the entire interwebs.

I'm still trying to figure out where Barney has gone. In episode one we were all going to the same place. I go to that place in Ep 2, and there isn't even a mention of him. Just concern on overjealous Hoffman who I could care less about.

Tiny little errors like these are kinda silly when you think about games where the whole narrative makes no sense. Dead Rising for instance...

SPOILER - You were Warned

...Cows? Seriously? Cows and bugs and South America? And Carlos chooses to travel all the way to Colorado? What?

But, that implies free will. When Fettel is taken out (and before he most annoyingly comes back in Extraction Point), the soldiers just stand there.

It is. But the ultimate expression of Fridge Logic comes when <url=http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ItJustBugsMe>something Just Bugs You.

In San Andreas, all the missions are too complicated. The best example is when the player has to frame someone by stealing their car and driving it across town and back in Silent Hill fog in 90 seconds without denting it.

Why couldn't I put the drugs in a second car, drive it over, and put the drugs in the other car?

Kingdom Hearts/II: Sora is told only his Keyblade can damage the Heartless, so why can all his allies, who are armed with non-Keyblade weapons, damage and defeat them too?

Oh, and why can only Sora deliver a final blow to bosses?
