This might not be what you guessed by the title (weirdos). Well, I was watching an anime earlier today that shall go unnamed because I feel some shame in watching a teen drama even if the cultural difference makes me able to justify it to myself. Well, I was watching it, and I was bored, so I decided I'd like to learn Japanese. First option was look up lessons online. I found a sight that I'm sure would be very helpful if I didn't instantly remember exactly why I failed Spanish in school. Right now I can say my name and where I'm from in Japanese, and both are a little sketchy and the accent is definitely off.

Anywho, after fifteen minutes of this (it hasn't been an hour since the show ended, btw) I decided to look up the "learn it in your sleep" tapes I've heard so much about. I'm going to give them a try if they're free more than likely keep studying on the website I found, but I'm kind of curious.

Has anyone done the whole "In your sleep" route before? If so, how did it work for you? And how long did you go at it?

PS, I'm going to avoid paying for things as much as humanly possible. If I'm getting scammed I'd rather be scammed for free.

Never tried it, but I seem to remember hearing that it's actually a myth that you can learn things while you sleep.

I haven't personally tried any in your sleep routes before. But I've heard that its actually not very effective from what I've read on the practice, but I could be wrong.

I'm just going to let you know that learning Japanese over the internet is very likely to be impossible.

I figure as much, but it's worth a try. I have a habit of making projects that I finish very successfully when bored. I just have to explore all avenues of half-assing it beforehand.

I've heard they are all scams. I'd look for video lessons on YouTube if I wanted to learn basic Japanese or something else.

I'm a fucking pro.
Can I buy an inspirational audio tape from you that helps teach me how to sleep in my sleep? I could use that as a life skill.

I've learned things in school while sleeping, but I wouldn't think that you can learn a whole language in such a state.

I think the only sure way to teach yourself Japanese is Rosetta Stone.

I don't trust youtube. For obvious reasons. I'll keep that as a last resort.

Not to rain on your parade, but your brain essentially hibernates in your sleep, it shuts down the ability to move your body, and isn't too responsive. The brain simply isn't active enough to learn anything when it's not fully awake. I have trouble in college after staying up till 2 am (much like now) nevermind, when i AM asleep

Trust me. I tried. I'm going to be a freshman in college this year and I just registered for classes today. Japanese was one of them. I picked up some words and VERY rudimentary grammar just from watching anime but I'd hardly call myself "proficient" in the language.

What I will say is that you can learn both the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets from the internet. I made flashcards and taught myself both so I wouldn't have to bother memorizing them in college. Reading amazon.jp is awesome even if I can't understand squat.

I'd suggest picking up the alphabets and taking a real class or using a program like Rosetta Stone.

I move a lot in my sleep. And after the dreams I've been having lately I can't honestly think that my brain isn't active while I sleep. Maybe I'm just really distracted in my version of sleep, but that'll probably help here.

Good to know. Still, I'm only doing this because I've got nothing to do, so it's worth a try. Now I'll just try less hopefully.

Definitely do it and make a thread documenting your progress! I'm interested to see if it actually works.

Rosetta Stone is phenomenal. I was using it for a while to teach myself German. Life got hectic and I didn't have time to do it anymore, but even though it's been like half a year since I last used it, I still remember the words I learned when I was using it. The way they teach you the language really gets it to stick in your mind.

If I remember right Brainiac did a test on the whole learning in your sleep business and it turned out to be a bunch of bullshit.

After a mighty fuckload of hours of research, which probably could have been used to study the language but successfully killed my day despite, I have discerned that it's not going to be that easy. Thank you everyone for basically telling me the same thing.

For those of you who expressed interest in learning Japanes (all one of you), I found out that Michael Thomas Japanese Review is a good thing to get. It's also fucking expensive, but still half the price of Rosetta Stone. Well, fuck. I need a job to do the thing I was hoping to kill time with while I don't have a job.
