There are many big words. Some of which we will never use because they're useless in context. However, knowing these gigantic words can make us feel smarter and, if we use them correctly, look smarter. I myself know a few big words like ranarium: Frog farm or Kakistocracy: government by the worst citizens.

So what big words do you know? If you know any, please leave a definition with the word. This way we can all increase our vocabulary.

PS: I used the search bar but I found nothing. If I repeated a thread, my bad. Just don't harass me for it, please.

The chemical name of Titin is 189,819 letters long. That's a big word. Also, Baroque. (Love that word.)

Circumgyrate just means to move in circles. But let's be careful with this sharing of knowledge, because as William Butler Yeats said, "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

Big words suffer enormously from decreasing marginal utility and increasing access to indexed information. I don't think I'll ever need to know what a ranarium is, in a situation where the Internet is unavailable, for instance.

And this is coming from a guy who made his own spelling tests in third grade by flipping through the dictionary and choosing the coolest words.

Individualistic: focusing on, or to do with, independancy. Usually used to refer to cultures.

Son of two doctors here, so I get to hear about a lot of weird illnesses as part of casual conversations - the longest one I can think of right now is thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, which I believe causes the body to bleed into the skin (among other, more dangerous places, like the brain). This symptom is often misdiagnosed as a simple rash, which is why it's fatal more often than not.

Lugubrious. It's my linguistic nuclear warhead. I'd feel terrible actually using it, but it's there for an emergency. I've got a fairly expansive vocabulary so I've got a few more like that.

Floccinaucinihilipilification - The act of judging something to be worthless.

Used in an obvious context.
E.g.

Accuser: You sir, are NOTHING.

Indignant Recipient: Good chum, did you just floccinaucinihilipilificate me?

Accuser: Yes. Yes I did.

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicavocanoconiosis (spelt wrong but it's a hard word to spell). My sister taught me that when I was bored on a plane journey and I never forgot it. It means . . . something to do with a lung disease that you could get if you inhale volcano gases/ash or something along those lines.
