India Developing Weaponized Chili Peppers

The arms race just escalated to include weapons made from bhut jolokia chili peppers, which are by far the hottest pepper known to man.

Peppers are rated by the Scoville scale on their hotness. The bhut jolokia pepper, primarily found in the Bangladesh and the northeastern states of India, is rated at 1,040,000 Scoville units, almost twice the strength of the second place pepper, the red savina, and up to 20 times as hot as the average jalapeño. Scientists are trying to use the bhut jolokia in several practical military applications. Pepper spray is nothing new, but Indian scientists have developed a prototype of a non-toxic pepper grenade which can incapacitate mobs or possible insurgents.

"The chili grenade is a non-toxic weapon and when used would force a terrorist to come out of his hideout," said RB Srivastava, the lead scientist on the project. "The effect is so pungent that it would literally choke them.

"Now we are perfecting the design and once that happens, we will start production," said Srivastava. "Its pungent smell will force the target victim to throw up and the eyes will burn like hell, but all without any long-term damage.

"It will immobilise them but not kill them," he said.

While the grenade is the most promising, the team is also working on other uses for the bhut jolokia. "There are other applications as well, what we call women power," Srivastava added. "A specially made chilli powder could act as a tool for women to keep away anti-socials and work in this regard is also on[going]."

Let that be a warning to all of you anti-socials out there!

Then there's the wildlife they have to keep away. "The chili paste could also act as a major repellent against wild elephants," Srivastava said.

Despite its heat, the bhut jolokia is used in small quantities to enhance curry dishes, but sometimes its heat is undetectable by humans. Last year, one young woman, Anandita Dutta Tamuly ate 51 bhut jolokias in two minutes before a crowd to set a record.

But she may be one of the few people who genetically can't detect the capsaicin that provides food with its heat.

Good thing she's not anti-social!

I can think of one way women could use the chili to fend off rapists, but it might backfire.

The food wars begin!

mark my words this will be like the cold war, but instead of the rush to develop Tactical Nukes, it'll be the rush to develop a potent Soy sauce.

We need something to combat this Pepper!, What news on the Coca-Cola Mentos bomb?

Well that's pretty odd but if it works that's awesome. Pretty sure that pepper would be a hell of a pepper spray to use on some creep.

Edit: The picture works now, sorry about that.

The questions I have are:
How long does it take to disperse so the area can be entered safely?
Is it anything like CS gas where it irritates exposed skin as well as mucous membranes?
Does it linger on the body and clothing so that anyone handling them could accidentally incapacitate themselves?

As long as there isn't much need to enter where you throw it or handle those incapacitated by it, it seems like it would be effective. But thats still pretty specialized, being non-lethal plus those limiting factors... If given the choice I'd still rather have flashbangs and beanbags.

Sounds a bit inhumane. Like mustard gas only it doesn't kill you.
Good thing its a self defense weapon, reserved for those who act inhumanely, besides if a woman doesnt use this, she'll probably kick ya in the nuts instead, which sounds more humane?

not so good:

now, maybe we could mix in the powder from this pepper into the coke...
This is unexceptable!, we've dumped Millions into this research and we've only reached amusing prank level of lethality?

Perhaps, best start working on it, we'll need to secure this volatile substance though, ill send the marines to secure the grocery section of a Tescos, you'll have your peppers "Mr.Scientist".

what of bannana peels?

Wait it'd be used for personal defense? That's definatly bad news xD
I think i'd rather be kicked in the nuts than being made to throw up and have my eyes burnt out (my eyesight's bad enough damnit!). I really doubt i'd be in that kind of situation though.

However, they have been known to drink 6 cans of Stella directly afterwards before going back for more.

Hahaha, nice one.

So, when terrorists are being trained they will have to eat a lot of peppers
