The Final Fronteir (working title) is a new hybrid of videogames, mixing elements of farm sims, open world and action-adventure genres. The player assumes control of a gardener in the oxygen farms of a prestigious star-ship which, due to a plumbing mishap, has recently been reduced to a population of you, due to rampant space ghosts consuming the rest of the crew. After the ghosts are sucked out, the ship is yours, and you are free to go on a fantastical space adventure beyond the farthest stars, fighting giant space squids, acquiring ludicrously powerful lasers, and seducing alien beauties. Oh, and keeping up the space-farm...radishes are very important too. Richly detailed 2D sprites and an overhead perspective yield a wide range of gameplay possibilities, including:

- Till the field, plant the crops, water the crops, and harvest the crops in your space-farm. Increasingly fantastical vegetation can be purchased or traded for, which can produce a variety of useful ingredients (for crafting). Sounds dumb? You can just purchase an automated system that can ensure your grass produces enough oxygen to keep you going.

- Fight off the ghosts ? otherwise they?ll wreck your crops, and probably spill coffee all over your favorite linens or something! A wide variety of enemies that can phase through walls, possess all the objects in your ship (and even people!) provides a contrasting tone of excitement, wherein plowshares are traded for laser-swords, laser-guns, laser-lasers and a huge variety of gadgets, including jetpacks, invisibility armor, coolness-boosting shades and much more. Dungeons (single and multiplayer) exist on various planets.

- Tend to animals. Want to go land on alien planets and hunt a variety of alien lifeforms? Go for it (We promise not to tell PETA)! Capture and train these animals to produce a variety of useful items, or provide services to the player.

- Like minecraft? Well this isn?t that, but you can mine asteroids you land on. Some of which may or may not be able to be hollowed out into secret villainous layers. Ores can be smelted into a variety of neat things, including weapons and ship upgrades.

- Customize or upgrade basically everything in the game: character appearance, ship layout, armor, your crop-field, ship appearance, your animals, ship AI, robotic minions (yeah, you have robotic minions) and much more!

- Build a rapport with the townsfolk on various planets to gain favors, add as ship-mates or just so that when you rob them, it?s all the more hilarious.

- Have friends who like games? No? Oh, well there is also a random filter for the multiplayer component of The Final Frontier: link up space crafts to exchange resources, team-up, talk gossip, take down bosses, and much more. Alternatively, you can hang out in player-versus-player zones if you?re in the mood to be a bandito. Go nuts.

The Final Frontier hopes to present a light-hearted story with rich gameplay to a wide audience: casual gamers can stick to tending to their crops and livestock, where-as adrenaline junkies can go ghost-busting. The Final Frontier has a projected release date of Summer 2013 on Steam, at the price of $10.

Out of curiosity, who would you purchase things like beam swords and the auto-farmer from if your whole crew is dead? Perhaps a vending machine/robot thingy?

The idea is that you could land on alien planets, and then converse, barter with or steal from the inhabitants on said planets.

The concept, quite frankly, sounds hilarious and I love it. It is vaguely reminiscent of Spore (travel to other planets) and Plants vs Zombies (space ghosts and crops, after all). I don't think I can critique anything. But how are the different elements tied together? Do you do the Bioware approach of the main character having stuff to do in the base (talk to companions, tend to crops, etc) and also then travel to the planets and fight space squids (awesomeness incarnate there) or maybe are these sort of different "mini-game" type of things?

Mass effect by way of Harvest Moon: go around your ship talking to crew-mates, attending to your crops, taking care of livestock, etc., steer ship to asteroids to mine, steer to planets to land for adventuring. Equip tools and them to do actions (hoe and watering can for crops, pick and shovel for mining, explosives and ghostly (possessing, telepathic) powers for shenangians, etc.).
