Yahtzee has defined this as a game that starts normally, but wanders off into a supernatural plot in the second half and has conspiracies and random superpowers coming out of nowhere. After hearing this definition, I laughed and cried because I realized my favorite anime, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is a textbook case of it.

In it's second season [Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai], it steers away from the original plot of kids randomly killing each other and blames it all on a disease that affects everyone born in the town.
Cult = government who wants to destroy the town
Superpowers = 14 year old who can time travel
Supernatural element = God in the form of another 14 year old.
