Spinwhiz, my heart goes out to you.

Anyway, good luck to all. I'm submitting my entries next week once they're done. Scripts have been written, "pencils" have been laid. I'm fortunate enough to be rocking a tablet laptop :D

My name is Vincent Gray, and I've been making web comics for a while now.
Doing two comics a week is a lot, seeing most webcomic artist only produce one per week.
When I first started I could only make one per month, but it gets easier every time.
Please ask your self can you continue writing two jokes a week? Can you produce your art quickly? If no then it may be to soon for you.
I fear the one that dose get the job will burn out of ideas quickly.

I will be entering and for a sample of my work heres my deviant art page.

What I couldn't find is the answer to this particular conundrum; if somebody does win but decides they don't wish to sign once a contract has been drawn up, for whatever reason, does the entrant still hold all rights on the comic/characters/idea to publish it elsewhere, as if they had lost?

Apologies if this has been asked already.

Best of luck everyone.

Ah, damn, I really wanted to enter this contest until I read this bit in the small print:

"Webcomics submitted to The Escapist Webcomic Contest must be the exclusive property of the contest entrant and have never before appeared or been broadcast in any form anywhere."

Dammit, I've already got a small video game/general pop culture web-comic up on DeviantArt that I really wanted to enter... I guess I'll just have to come up with a new idea in the next couple of weeks.

Oh well, I guess if anybody still needs an artist to work with, here's a link to my dA page;

Hope your character design pictures don't cause you guys to be disqualified because of the "Webcomics submitted to The Escapist Webcomic Contest must be the exclusive property of the contest entrant and have never before appeared or been broadcast in any form anywhere." rule.

I wouldn't have risked it but maybe I'm just over cautious.

@pooryohei I was thinking the same thing, but the wording seems to stipulate that the comic strip itself in its finished, submitted form cannot have appeared before on the internet. Even still, it's not such a stretch to modify the characters as they appear here a little to make them legally different from their appearance in the comic, no?

Yeah, I just totally wasted the text portion of my entry (the part where you're supposed to explain what you're "trying to portray") because I thought it was a question box... Who put the submission box right below the bold print "Questions? Comments? Concerns?"...

Its probably because I'm blind, but I definitely mistook it for a question box, not realizing this forum existed.

EDIT:

Also, seeing as it wasn't a question box, I guess I'll ask here: what exactly is meant by "brand"? I guess I would have an easier time figuring out what to do for it if I knew what it was for. How will it be used and why does it have to be square?

I have no idea if it's been asked already but it's bugging me, What's the policy on art work that's already been uploaded to a site like DeviantArt, which isn't so much publishing as it is an online portfolio?
Will I be allowed to submit such artworks or will I be required to remove it all from that site beforehand? (considering it's all my work)
Or if I'll have to create an entirely new idea all together.
If you have posted the work you are submitting ANYWHERE, you cannot enter it into this contest. While can appreciate what DeviantArt offers to people with an art portfolio, we want your NEW ideas, not stuff you have been working on. We want to show the world for the first time, right here on The Escapist and let everyone we know to come check it out.

The spirit of this event is for new art, which shows us what you are capable of putting together within a month but also shows us if you are able to draw up 2 comics per week and if we can rely on you.

We know there are a ton of great writers and artists out there but bring us the new and awesome from your arsenal. If others have already seen it published anywhere, it's not new enough.
Along this same premise does that also extend to rough sketches and proof of concept for something that hasn't fully been fleshed out or developed yet but has still been posted elsewhere?
Yes, that would extend to sketches and proofs as well.
Crap, I found the wordage that stipulates that sketches and any related stuff is included with "submitted content". I don't see how, but fair enough.

Seeing as the "sketches and proofs" clause was specifically noted in the forum already, and that the offending parties are posting sketches and proofs where this was noted, I think we probably just lost a couple entrants.

Maybe the mods will bless them with a second chance and pull the images, wagging a stern finger. Or maybe... it'll be a different sort of finger they get.

Here's one of the concepts for our entry, we're just starting work on the frames now. Episodic/story-driven all the whahay.

Best of luck everyone.
Spectacular Image ^^ very well drawn

I think a few people are over reacting. The "No previous submissions of art" rule appears to me to be in place to stop people using comics that have been conceived or created prior to the competition start date. I can't see how one image posted on the forum of the competition holders is going to effect the legitimacy of an entry.

I'm really disappointed that all I can do is send images. I wanted to give them a complete rundown on my idea.
So that they'll know what the comic's is about, were I'm taking it, future scrips for the comics, why I think it'll sell, and a bit of my resume.
I've done a lot of plaining in the background to make sure that I can keep my comic fresh, original and funny.
Is there a place I can send this information? Should send them a letter though e-mail, or just forget it.

If we consider a "rules as written" approach, it means disqualification. I would also consider that treatment relevant in terms of professionalism. They are looking for a future contributor, after all. I'm not saying they should be disqualified, but I couldn't really argue if it happened.

There's a box on the Contest Rules Page [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/contests/register/webcomic10], near the bottom, labeled 'Special Information.' You're supposed to put that information there. Although they request "a brief description of your comic entry" rather than a pitch and a resume.

There is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law... The legalities are there because they have to be, it's the world we live in. If they really want your comic and it was born for this contest The Escapist will make it happen.

I uploaded it to Twitpic today, I drew it up a few days ago. How are we supposed to agree on a ruling like that? While the image itself isn't going to be the comic, even though it was created specifically for the contest, the characters depicted will. The rules as written seem to state specifically "submission" as in the actual final submission cannot have appeared anywhere else in any form which would make sense. TEM surely wouldn't want to publish old material (old in this sense being made and posted online before February 1, before the contest was opened and announced). What I don't get is why rough sketches and character concepts that are components of our contest submission can't be posted.

Today at 15:39 EST I posted a picture depicting two characters side-by-side, drawn on 2/9/2010. I subsequently linked its page to this forum where we're kicking around ideas and hair-splitting questions about legal jargon. About 3 hours later, after poring through the thread again, I found where Spinwhiz explicitly states that "sketches and proofs" are part of the stuff that cannot have been published online and I immediately deleted the picture. It had around 20 views at the time, likely from Twitpic's public timeline and a few users on this thread.

I want to point out again that on the contest information page says, "Webcomics submitted to The Escapist Webcomic Contest must be the exclusive property of the contest entrant and have never before appeared or been broadcast in any form anywhere." A webcomic has characters; a plot, beit long or short for the purposes of a joke; and panels, and my image simply has one of those things. I would like to submit that an image of 2 characters designed specifically for my contest submission does not constitute a webcomic that has appeared in any form before the opening of this contest. Furthermore, and I know that having linked the image to the forum thread that rules against it invalidates this stance but the contest page simply doesn't stipulate sketches and proofs, and the entrant isn't required to read this forum to see all the fine distinctions we've forced Spinwhiz to make. The winner might not have ever gone onto the thread to see what we've all had to say about the contest and might have posted a few concepts on his Facebook page. What then?

My questions boil down to these:

1. Can I get a reprieve based on the case I've made above?
2. Is my submission disqualified because I've shown other people characters that I've designed for it?
3. Can I repurpose my submission to have modified (read: legally different) designs of the characters depicted in the image I linked?
4. Or am I 100% totally disqualified and not allowed to enter anymore?

I'm flexible enough to be able to redraw some characters, that's not what bothers me. I feel like I have a shot and I don't want to miss out because of something trivial like this.
