With a rise in downloadable games, you hear more people talking about a fun game of Castle Crashers than the close victory in COD4. With services such as PSN, XBLA, and WiiWare giving indy delvelopers new ways to have their hard work put in the public eye, and make a profit as well, its easy to see why their so popular. So, what are some of your favorites? Do you think this is hurting the hardcore game market, or helping it?

NOTE: As you can tell by my post count, I'm new. And yes I searched for a simular topic, and from what I've searched, it wasn't there. Yes I know the search button exists, and no, I don't care if this has been done to death or not.

I think people who really have an appreciation for good games like indy developers, mostly because if they do it right you get a game that is completely different from the mainstream crowd.

Mount&Blade for one. Bought the key on Steam during a sale and activated a version from the site. Good way to kill a few hours.

World of Goo is good if you want a bit more of a puzzle game (also bought on Steam during a weekend sale.) Profit? Not as much. Game reported 80% piracy rate.

The only thing really hurting the 'Hardcore' game market are the 'hardcore' games. More and more they seem to be the same regurgitated idea over and over again.

I also remember hearing about an iPhone apper who was sad that his application wasn't paying off. Can't blame him though, the App Store sees more shovelware than the gardening section at a Home Depot.

I only used the term how most people do. As Yahtzee (may have) put it, "Hardcore gamers are people who play games as a main hobby, and casual gamers are just housewives bored of screwing the TV repairman."

I'll accept that definition. I myself have a rather bad addiction to video games (I say addiction, because I literally go through withdrawal symptoms if I don't play a game at least once a day)

I've always liked the game Lugaru, because of the fighting system, the almost impossible difficulty especially against three wolves, and the challenge level. There's always a way to mix it up in that game, but I don't feel it really takes advantage of every mechanic.

I have an addiction as well. except it's for Age of Empires.
